What is this? The Corolla has gained some shred of personality!

The only real interesting ones in the past that I can recall are the AE86 Corollas of the late 80's (cuz RWD, intial D and the inspiration for the Toyota 86/GT86/Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ)
And the lesser known, forgotten 2005-2006 Toyota Corolla XRS with the super high revving Celica GTS motor.

So after decades of boring Corollas, they finally bring this out for the next generation.

the 2.0L motor is brand new and rated at 168HP. big jump over the anemic 130hp that the corolla has had forever.
Heres hoping the 200hp or even the lexus Turbo 2.0 finds its way into this into some racier versions.

This should print money for Toyota, especially since
Corolla = money already.

fwiw, I've been really liking Toyotas in general lately. I was dead set on the new civic for when i need to get a new car but something from Toyota is looking better and better. I don't like hatchbacks but the regular 4 door corolla is lookin like a good choice...

Why did they have to make the Type R so damn ugly? Amazing little car, but holly **** does it scream ricer.

They had to do something to make it stand out from the normal civic. So in the minds of most people anytime you put some type of body modification on a civic it immediately screams rice.

trying to capture the subaru wrx crowd, i'm guessing.
a swing and a miss by Honda. the rear end especially looks like a turd.

Whole lotta meh in this thread.

well it is a corolla,
I was just surprised that this time around they brought something out that wasn't the typical coffin on wheels corolla.

It does seem like Toyota's on a roll now turning their geriatric sleeping pillmobiles into something that can actually hang with Mazda and Honda driving dynamics.

Boost it, put good suspension on it, VW's seeming cornering on the hot hatch niche will go away overnight.

hey look what Toyota did:

With the existence of the GR Yaris for rally purposes and no Yaris actually sold in North America after 2020, Toyota couldnt (or just wouldnt) sell that car here and this Corolla hot hatch had been teased, and now its a real thing.

They basically transplanted the rally inspired GR Yaris mechanical bits (boosted 3 cyl with 300hp instead of 261, 6 speed manual + manual handbrake, AWD with 3 F:R modes of 60:40, 50:50 AND 30:70) and placed it in a Corolla body weighing under 3300lbs.

Who'da thunk that Toyota of all manufacturers would be the one pumping out cars that tugs at the enthusiast heartstrings now.

Eh. You still have Mazda putting out an excellent hatch. I won't lie, the new GTI/Golf R front-end really doesn't do it for me, and they've kinda lost me as a future buyer with the new body. I've been looking more and more into the Mazda 3.

The capacitive touch buttons in the MK8 GTI/Golf R make it a 100% never buy for me. Looks aren't good either, but they really goofed it up where it matters most besides handling for me, inside the car.
