16.8.1 driver is out

Spyre freesync is not working properly with this driver. As well as stuttering the screen. Refresh on the desk top is malfunctioning. Rolled back to 16.7.2 and its working. Seems to be affecting a lot of people on other forums.

Looks like the workaround is to enable GPU scaling along with Freesync. Odd really.

That's odd indeed. As I said I'm running 16.7.2 now with GPU scaling off and freesync works fine. How can this slip through QA or do they not do any now given how quickly they are putting out driver releases? It's beta I suppose so maybe they'll pick it up in a future WHQL release.

I don't need GPU scaling on is I only have a couple of old games that won't do 1440p and the monitor handles them fine. From a personal perspective I don't think anything in 16.7.3 or 16.8.1 is of real benefit to my Fury Pro so happy to stick with 16.7.2 as they just seem to work.

Why do you think Fury needs more .... optimizations ?

Which card doesn't need more optimisations? TBH the Fury is 12 months old now and the new kids on the block are the RX4xx so they are bound to concentrate more on them. I generally look for fixes in the release notes and if it fixes something on a game I play I'll generally update it. Sometimes I'll just update it for the hell of it  What's not so good is when they break something that was previously working fine. But hey they're beta so they are issued 'as is' so you pays your money and takes your choice I guess. As I've done just roll back to a previous working driver.

The issue is being flagged as high importance and should hopefully have a resolution soon(tm) The 16.30 drivers I tested had working freesync so some last min change somewhere must have broken it. AMD do have a Q/A dept or two and they do flag things up and help repro bugs that people report via the website.

Thanks Spyre it's good to know that it's been flagged as high importance. TBH I'm a bit of a beta whore as I'm running Mac OS Sierra on my mini, IOS 10 on my Ipad Air and Android 7.0 nougat on my Nexus 7p so I'm no stranger to beta issues

It might be that I'm just a traditionalist but whilst I expect issues on beta software I expect some front end Q/A to stop 'new' features being added that break important things in the existing software. It's just sloppy and just fuels the misnomer that AMD drivers are not great. Fixing these on the back end is a bit like after the lord mayor's show (google it!) because the bad PR outweighs the good. Not complaining just my 2 penny's worth.'

True but with the amount of games to support and features and amount of different hardware it does get difficult to find issues and issues can take a variety of man hours to get fixed once they get found and that isn't always possible before the next driver gets released. Lots of times bugs only appear in very specific circumstances which doesn't help either. Like for example the crash with Overwatch which only seems to occur when one skin is used on a certain character.

I should be giving the drivers to the beta testers I picked this week which should help find more issues too.

You're doing a great job Spyre keep it up. As I said I'm not complaining because I realise that you're giving up your time to help old whingers like me. Truly I appreciate your efforts.

LordHawkwind:
R9 285 is same core as r9 fury and apeared on August 23, 2014
R9 Fury apeared a year later so basically it was kinda another year of optimizations around this core before the fury was released. In 2 years things got pretty mature unless there were some specifics with fury pro.

Essentially the R9 285 was the Tonga core or the pathfinder for GCN 1.2 and Fiji (aka Fury's) were the last optimised version of GCN 1.2. Although the same 'Core' they served completely different market segments and you can't really compare a 285 which wasn't much faster than the 280 with a Fiji card.

They were a totally different design with Fiji introducing HBM with it's interposter which was totally different to the 285 with it's traditional GDDR5 ram.

That whole reporting site they have is simply horrible.
There is no way to get feedback or see if other people have the same issue(s).

Microsoft has a open bug tracker now (with private flags if requested/required), and they want active participation on open bugs, with all the people that have the same issue all discussing it. They also have a way to report bugs through the feedback app, which also has the ability to up vote something, for "insiders", but, it really is a excellent feature!
https://insider.windows.com/ https://connect.microsoft.com/ and so on.

Wish AMD would follow the same procedures instead of getting the generic write-up when you make the bug report. Yes, I know the new Radeon setting has a 'report issue' which goes to the "survey" site. Seriously, that really needs to be renamed. Survey for reporting issues?
Then, it asks the user for a ton of information that Radeon settings can EASILY get, like part #, OS, system information, and so on. It really is quite silly that Radeon settings won't generate all the requested information, and either open that as a text file, so you can paste the information in, or just dump it to a file, and then upload it to the "survey" site.

That said, speaking of high importance, one of the biggest problems is the 'black screen' issue that is popping up on 285, 380, 380X, and 480 cards (I imagine 460 & 470 as well). Basically, the monitor gets "powered off", and windows is still running, so you have to do everything blindly.
AMD's forums has lots of posts about this, here is one of the more recent ones https://community.amd.com/thread/200862
Then you got reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4f65db/r9_380_users_who_have_black_screen_crashes_help/
and so on...
It reminds me of the 6850 fiasco of the GPU crashing and taking the system down with it.

Sorry Spyre, I don't mean to sound harsh, but it is really annoying that there doesn't seem to be anyone who is thinking of ways to simplify and process these reports in any way that the general public can at least see some kind of feedback on their issues or, more importantly, collaborate on the issue in question to help AMD figure out why and when it is happening. Heck, for those that constantly have the issue, they could even run a special debug driver that captures a ton of information about what is going on, and then AMD would have a ton more useful information to see where things are going wrong.

This keep everything secret mentality is the kind of thinking MS did back before they had a leadership change, and they revamped their whole bug reporting & feedback philosophy.

285 when lunched was an experimental card. They throw it in the public wild and people who bought provided feedback (or moan) and they matured things on this new core...285 paved the way to your Fiji.

@Qamly

AMD use Jira for bugs so I guess it could be possible, not something I know anything too much about myself. Microsoft do have a lot of money so they can do all kinds of fancy things if they want ;)

AMD are aware of the black screen issue and are looking into it at the moment. I personally don't get the issue on my 480 cards.

Also, im not sure its a great idea for your competition to be able to see what bugs you are tracking/fixing.

I can confirmed this. I had a black screen a few times during playing Overwatch. 7950 w/ 16.8.1 driver on Win 7. I haven't tested it on Win 10 though. Just uninstalled it and then installed 16.7.3. No black so far.
