Unable to download Win7 Updates after using GWX.

I used the GWX tool to get rid of the Windows 10 upgrade nonsense on my Win 7 system. I've noticed, however, that whilst I'm getting the security updates for Security Essentials, none of the general or critical KB-type updates are downloading, even when I'm getting the notification for them and accepting them to download. None of them appear to be related to Win10 upgrades.

Anyone else having the same problem?

Do you have system restore on? Maybe use that to undo the GWX tool? or Run the windows update troubleshooter.
I use Autopatcher to get updates for my Win7. Try that If you can't find a solution to fix it.

What happens when you manually check for updates? The only issue I've seen is the usual slowdown that comes with checking for updates now (my machine takes up to two hours to find any new updates, each and every Patch Tuesday). I never used GWX Control Panel, though-- I just disabled WinUpdates and set the group policy to disable the OS upgrade, and then manually hid (or ignored) anything related to Win10.

Okay, I think the GWX is a red herring.

After a system restore before using GWX, redownloading and reinstalling the Windows Update Agent, downloading the updates, and then having them fail...

...I just installed Win7 on a brand-new PC to replace my old business one, Gigabyte BRIX system, installed Win7 off a thumb drive I made bootable from my own Win7 DVD disc, no outside sources involved. And after the "Hey, you should install Windows 10" window I declined and chose instead to install SP1 for Windows 7.... THAT FAILED TOO.

I swear MS purposefully hobbling the updates for Win7 to force people on to Win10.

Windows 7 being a shitpickle about retrieving and installing updates has been going on longer than Windows 10 has been available and the GWX thing has been a...thing. Both are red herrings and its due to Windows Update on Windows 7 being a gigantic piece of ****. In the end it's still Microsofts fault though cause they'll never improve the experience and there is no solid fix. That is unless you feel like moving to Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 where the process is way less painful. Which is probably not an option and I don't fault you for wanting to keep 7.

Gotta grin and bear it and hope that it works itself out after beating it for a while.

Since you went ahead and reinstalled, download and install SP1 first:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15090/windows-7-install-service-pack-1-sp1

Then follow the suggestions on this site to kickstart WinUpdate and get everything else up to date. This article also summarizes the directions on the first site quite nicely.

Also, make sure you disable the WinUpdate service and go offline before installing any updates that you manually download.

That should put it back to normal until it breaks again next month and needs another new band-aid.

Thanks for your help.

Damn... I must have been lucky up until now, because I wasn't having any issues at all with update until the end of July. Welp, manual updates it is!

No problem. Hope you managed to get it all sorted, because it's a definite pain.

If you still had WinUpdate set to auto (which I'm assuming you did since you were using GWX Control Panel), then you probably just didn't notice it being slow to download. It still works... it just takes longer than usual. It's really easy to ignore, especially when it's running in the background during the middle of the night. Turning WinUpdate off and checking manually-- which is what most of us Win10 tinfoil hatters have done-- just makes it painfully obvious whenever you do go to check for updates.

Really have no idea what exactly caused your original problem, though. Did this at least fix the new issues on the reinstall?

Humph.

Using WSUS offline update, and when it gets to downloading and validating update 199 of 216, the downloading simply stops. I've verified there's no net traffic under Task Manager, so I'm not sure what's going on here... does the update simply not exist, and that's why Windows Update under the OS won't download it?

Weird...

Thanks. I might try that one instead of WSUS offline installer. Because Windows 7 update stuck trying to download the 6 updates.
