The FSR Thread (Announcements & Discussion)

Is it me or is performance mode upscaling on this look better than usual? Maybe we have a new version of FSR upscaler as well...

It does seem to look better. Although it could also just be because of the limited view.

FSR 3 is now out and you can try it for free in the Forspoken Demo

Upon a quick test, make sure you turn V-Sync off, as it felt stuttery with it on. Which I mean, if you have Freesync/G-Sync you don't likely use V-Sync anyway.

FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS

GRAPHICS
  • Added support for AMD FidelityFXTM Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3). (PC)
  • Added support for Intel Xe Super Sampling (XeSS). (PC)
  • Fixed an issue that could make the clouds appear to vibrate when using DLSS performance mode. (PC)
  • Fixed minor visual artifact that could occur when aiming with a weapon or task swapping.
STABILITY
  • Changed how FormIDs are freed when loading saves. This should improve stability for saves that have visited many locations.
  • Fixed a crash that could happen when making changes to the ship that required all items to be moved to the cargo bay in the Ship Builder menu.
MISCELLANEOUS
  • Reverted a change that caused the data menu to open when taking screenshots with F12 (PC)
  • Fixed an issue causing the resolution scale to reset to 1.0 when switching from Fullscreen to Windowed mode when using DLSS. (PC)

Brings FSR3 FG outta beta.

They really need to improve the upscaling part of FSR though, there are so many graphical effects that turns FSR into a ghosting mess.

Gotta agree. The upscaler was last updated with FSR 2.2 and that come out in Nov of 2022. So well over a year without any large updates to the upscaler is a crazy long time.

They talked quite a bit about PS5 pro specs recently that has what looks like an AI upscaler. It might be Sony only but since the gpu is Navi 3 based we might get an FSR 4 out of it.

I'm wondering if AMD might announce something during Microsoft's Direct Super Resolution presentation at GDC.

Be nice if we got one more big upscaler upgrade even if it is only for Navi3 and moving forward. Im not bothered by the glittering lines in some games like CP 2077 but it is kind of obvious on FSR...

I think it is a shame that they did not just "copy" intel and made a version of FSR with the same system requirements as XESS, sure it might be slower, but the image quality increase would be worth it.

Agreed. If AMD does the AI route, and I see no reason not to now, then they 100% should do the same thing as Intel or like them (so a DP4a and matrix math cores path). They can also probably keep the non-AI version improving as well... by deriving enhancements and improvements from the AI version where they can. So they could even end up with something even more all encompassing than XeSS by doing that.

Introducing AMD FSR 3.1 with Improved Upscaling Quality

Announced today at our GDC 2024 “High Performance Rendering in Snowdrop Using AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3)” presentation, AMD FSR 3.1 will have some significant improvements, new capabilities, and updates:

  • Upscaling image quality improvements:
    • Improved temporary stability at rest and in movement – less flickering and/or shimmering and “Fizziness” around objects in motion.
    • Ghosting reduction and better preservation of detail.
  • Decoupling FSR 3 upscaling from frame generation:
    • Allows FSR 3.1 frame generation technology to work with other upscaling solutions.
  • New AMD FidelityFX API:
    • Makes it easier for developers to debug and allows forward compatibility with updated versions of FSR.
  • Vulkan® and Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK) support.

AMD FSR 3.1 will be available for developers on GPUOpen in Q2 and will be coming to games later this year.

No AI, but this does look good. The ability to decouple FSR3 Frame Generation, so it can be used completely separately... is pretty sweet and unexpected to see.

Goods news to see they can still improve the upscaler without AI in that older gpus may still be able to use it.

They really need to improve the upscaling part of FSR though, there are so many graphical effects that turns FSR into a ghosting mess.

There's also an issue with it just not playing nice with certain effects. The fur rendering in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a good example—the way it processes the image makes the fur look disproportionately sharp and grainy compared to the rest of the image. The ghosting and other issues made me just stop using FSR in R&C because Insomniac's in-house scaler produces a more consistent (albeit softer) result.

Nice, I hope that they are willing to bribe/encourage the publishers/developers to update older FSR titles to 3.1.

I certainly hope so because FSR 3 adoption has been abysmal so far. New releases are still shipping with FSR 2 and even a few games are still shipping with FSR 1 (Helldivers 2, I think). Any improvements made to FSR are kind of irrellevant if there are hardly any games supporting it, whether they be new releases or older releases updated to support it. Kind of frustrating.
