Rainbow Six Main Menu Display Problems

Hello,

I have been attempting to run the Red Storm Entertainment game "Rainbow Six" and have applied their v1.04 Patch.

I enjoyed the book so mucy I decided to purchase the game.

I got a very distorted display in the upper left hand corner of my display when the game gets to the "Main Menu" and when exiting the game Windows was locked up.

I contactd RSE and they replied and advised me to try an older ATI Driver v4.11.6076.

The ATI Driver I was using here-to-fore was v4.11.6114.

Installing the older dirver did fix the one problem I was having of Windows locking up upon exiting the game.

The problem with the garbled up display in the upper left hand corner fo the "Main Menue" was still present plus I now was getting "mouse trails"

I contected RSE once more and they replied for me to cut my "Hardware Acceleration" back

I finally got the game to work correctly by completely disabling the hardware acelleration altogether and this really showed up in the game running very sluggish even at 640X480 res.

I have at this point un-installed the game and reinstalled my ATI v4.11.6114 drivers.

I also run an ATI TV/FM ISA Bus Tuner card that would not work with the older driver.

I see an ATI beta driver v6.20CDH29 and wonder if perhaps this might remedy my problem?

Here's the rundown of my system.

Microstat 6118 440BX Mother Board

Kensington Expert Trackball v5.20 Drivers
Sony GDM 20SEIIT 20" Trinitron Monitor
My defauld res is 1024X768 - 32 Bit Color

I have contected ATI but thus far have not received any reply but I did check out their FAQ and see that they are aware of the problem.

Any help will be sincerely appreciated.

GOOD LUCK! I have tried EVERY driver ATI has and the LS drivers, I still have problems with Rainbow 6 !!! I am starting to think it MAY be a conflict with the SB live card... I have a SB live value card, and I've seen others with the same setup, have the same problems...

RB6 on my machine ( PIII 450 ) the screen gets all messed up if I have the menu bar on the bottom active. The screen "tears" with the surrounding, and gets blurred into one image... Sure wish I could find a fix! I wonder if RB6 Rouge Spear has this problem.....At least it has joystick support!

If ya do find a fix, let us know please ;-)

Thanks so much for the input. I have been wodering the very same about "Rouge Spear"

I don't play allot of games and I have always been a ATI fan but I am wondering if other boards ie. TNT - 3DFX - Creative also have these same problems with games?

I don't think there is anything as the perfect all round board for gaming?

I have to give Red Storm credit for al least responding to my email about this problem.

I also have checked into the FAQ within ATI support and they are aware of the problem with RB6.

I somtimes wonder if we should always lay blame on the hardware rather that software?

I have email into ATI Support and if I hear anything back that will be of help I'll post it right back on this BBS

Thanks Again,

Although I don't have Rainbow six yet there are several things I'd try based on info gleaned from the rageunderground website.

Try the 6155Ci3-LS2000 drivers. These have provided the best perfromance on my machine.

Use the rage 128 tweaker and mess around with the PRIMARY and SYSMEMBITS under the direct 3D tab. These settings can alleviate problems with the corruption related to the mouse.

Both the tweaker and the drivers can be found at http://www.rageunderground.com/

Also, you may post your question on that forum. There are several R6/Rouge spear fans that haunt the forums there. You may get some additional things to try.

Thanks Scott,

I was wondering what the "Tweak" utility was all about?

I take it that these beta or special drivers can be un-installed as well as the tweaking utility?

I am fairly savy about computing being in the compurter business for 12 years before having to retire for medical reasons but I have allot to learn when it comes to experimenting with other than manufactures drivers.

I heard about this site however from a Tech at ATI.

Thanks Again

John,

The 'Tweak' utility essentially allows you to modify driver settings without having to resort to editing the registry. One example (of many) is D3D 'enable v(ertical) sync'. Many D3D games exhibit 'mouse lag'. Enabling vertical sync can eliminate it in many cases. Tweaker makes this change in the registry for you. There are many, many other settings it gives you access too. It has very similar to the settings that are user adjustable from the ATI tabs in the advanced display properties, only more comprehensive. It also has fairly decent descriptions of what each setting does (hold the mouse over the setting and an info box appears.

Yes, the Tweaker can be uninstalled, but as long as you have an Rage 128 video card you'll want to keep (IMHO). There are lots of games that can be optimized (read: make them work) via the tweaker.

The drivers aren't really beta or special in the true sense of the word, and they ARE the ATI drivers. The drivers are made up of a bunch of files; 2D dlls (windows, older games), 3D dlls (OpenGL, D3D), and others. What the driver I listed is, is the best combination of the various files in ATI's released, beta, and special purpose drivers. In my experience, I would try the beta or special purpose drivers to improve my 3D gaming over the released drivers, but the 2D portion of the drivers would cause icon corruption in Outlook Express for example. Lightspeed has tested the various portions of the ATI drivers sets and combined them together in a rock solid set of drivers.

One important piece of info I have gleaned screwing around with the drivers: The D3D file is ati3draa.dll, and the OpenGL file is atio9xaa.dll. The 6155Ci3-ls2000 driver has the latest version of each (well the D3D file is version 4023 and the latest is 4024, but close).

I have had some success in the past updating just these files to gain better 3D performance, but Lightspeed's package gives it to you all at once. I will probably update the D3D file to 4024 eventually, but every thing works great now! Until ATI officially releases another driver, I'm sticking with the 6155Ci drivers. Versions for both Pentium and AMD on the site. Lots of support there too. (Plus I believe Lightspeed is a Rainbow6 fan himself so...........)

Sorry so long, if you want more details post here or email me.

Good luck!

Scott

Scott,

You probably have my email by now but I decided to go with the new "Light Speed" Driver v6155Ci-LS2000

I uninstalled the ATI Driver v4.11.6114 and then installed the 6155 and I am happy to report the RB6 is now up and running.

I am also delighted that my ATI TV/FM Tuner works great with the 6155 driver.

I am going to also install the Rage128 Tweak v1.2b but would like to know if I change anything with it is there an option in the program to go back to the origional settings?

I will drop "Lightspeed" a thankyou on Rageunderground.com

Thanks So Much Again Scott
