Rage3D - What's next

Jesus this place is exactly how I left it... it's like finding an old favorite toy in your attic that's been collecting dust for the last 20 years. The nostalgia is overwhelming but you're half afraid to play with it again for fear of breaking it.

So this thread is gonna go the way of that Rage3D 5.0 thread... :bleh:
Ichi is prolly just busy with life and stuff. Personally I've been wondering why the guys running the show don't just pass on the torch to some of the more active (and those with the necessary skills) members so they can develop the site / content - especially now that Ryzen is coming out and people are looking for information/help/whatever (boobs?)

But that's just me and my dirty open source mindset.

Well, personally, I wrote up a review on the H100i V2 and will be writing a small review on the X-850 Seasonic PSU and will also be reviewing the 570X Corsair case when it gets here...

It'd be nice if there was a robust member review section. Maybe with a sticky explaining what the basics of a review are to look like to help some new folks? Then maybe a procedure to get it posted to the home page once vetted?

Thats really what draws people alot of time. I know I came here because of a review. lol. Quality content in reviews. We gotta find someone that we can trust and has the time to do reviews of hardware the "site" would request for reviews.

Just my 2 cents.

I would love to see reviews, but it's kinda hard to compete with sites and people who review for a living. I mean how do you compete with something like Jonny Guru? Not to mention do it for free, or little compensation.

I believe it might be more effective to target niche sections in a review, like hardware hacks/mods, or build/software/etc recommendations. Something that the masses don't usually cover, along the lines of say ikea hacker, but for computers/electronics. It's much more difficult to produce this kind of content, but when you do it's gold.

Open up porn.rage3d.com access to all users, rather than just us secret mods. That'll attract all the users who have never seen a naked woman before (prolly over 50% rage3d, I expect).

 saved me the obvious 'paging ratchet' post.

As much as it pains me to say this, maybe a name change will be in order... Rysen or Ryse3d perhaps ? Not many know the signification of Rage anymore...

I love the community and it kinda sucks to say so, I don't visit the front page at all... Maybe we need some more exotic tests or on some weird but cool hardware ?

I think a name change to Rysen3D would be wise for the reason you stated. In addition, it would tell the world that both AMD CPUs (Rysen) and GPUs (3D) are important to the site.

I also believe that there should be original, professional content published on the front page. Now that AMD seems to be relevant on the CPU front again, I think there should be a primary focus on AMD hardware, but there should also be unbiased coverage of AMD's competitors' hardware to help build trust with readers. I for one would be suspect of a website if it exclusively covered a particular vendor, since it might look to me like an mouthpiece for that vendor rather than a independent, trustworthy source of information.

I guess we can wrap this thread up as a dead one too.

So, who wants to setup a new site from scratch? :-p

So Rage3D is still here and functioning on it's creaking vB version and dedicated server.

All I'm asking is for you not to have a break-down like MikeC at NvNews did after his son's death (was very tragic, he fought in the army in the Middle East) ... and also to not die like MikeC.

Someone should start a weekly rage3d podcast and each member would get a turn to be a guest.
Both are good ideas.

Also, set everyone back to zero post counts. :bleh:

The one problem I feel is the lack of will on the part of site management (no offense, just being honest here). I see people offering to do reviews of hardware/games/etc. I've even offered myself. I see people offering to keep the news updated.

But the response to those offers is always "meh". I think some of us would be willing to put in some time to do reviews, and at least collectively we could generate some content. But we need someone at the top to take the bull by the horns and say, "Hey, that's a great idea, let's see what you can do."

If you get a response like, "Bleh, go ahead and do it if you want to, and maybe we'll post it," that doesn't really encourage someone to put in the effort. It actually does the opposite. Am I going to take the time to write up a review and then at the end try to force someone to grudgingly put it up on their site? No, I'm not.

Now, in reality I don't see this site ever being able to compete with full time review sites like HardOCP or Anandtech, and to be honest I have my doubts there's that much money in that sort of thing anyway. That doesn't mean we can't still put out some reviews and other content as a community though. And, to be completely honest, sometimes you get a more realistic view from someone who is a non-professional, so I think there is some value in that.

In the end, all of that is to say, maybe the reality is the site management needs to be passed on to someone else. Maybe not entirely, like Ichneumon can keep official ownership and still step back in case everything goes down the crapper, but someone who has more time to be involved is given authority to call the shots on a daily basis. We can't do anything if no one is available to make a proactive decision about reviews, etc.
