People who drive larger vechicles

Did you always drive larger cars/or trucks and suvs?

How long did it take for you to adjust to the size/handling of it?

Is the extra space utilized or not?

I had to bring the company car (Mazda CX-30 2020) for service today. I've never driven it, so had to get used to it quick on the cut throat NJ roads. It was.... different. Especially from my car (2017 corolla le). I was surprised at how little extra space there was for storage in the back and at some of the lost of visibility through the back. Not nearly as much light came in through the cabin in general, compared to my car. It was a bit quicker but not a sea change, it lumbered a bit and surprisingly was not all that much more quiet than my car. The infomation-entertainment system was a bit of a pain compared to a more straightforward touchscreen and I wasn't entirely a fan of the way it was placed.

Overall, I wasn't impressed. : / was my face after driving it for a total of an hour. I'm sure people who buy it are getting what they need/want and I see it everywhere, so I'm inclined to believe that the issue is me rather than the car/crossover/wagon (??)...

So, what draws you to the larger vehicles?

I need the space for work and 4x4 for winter, ive driven an f150 since 2009. I like being up higher. There a bitch in the city for parking tho

Work is work.

The 'being up higher' must be a natural preference for some people. Never cared for it myself. I was higher up in the CX 30 and I'll be damned if I could actually see over more cars/trucks/vans than I could in my corolla.

Technically I drive CUVs and not a SUV. But when I had the Q7 (which qualifies as an SUV) it took all of 20 seconds to adjust. The one car I had maybe a minute to adjust was Range Rover Vogue since the screen is flat and massive, it felt like sitting higher and looking over the bonnet. But yeah didn’t take long. I felt a bit similar in the Mercedes G wagon as well.

I drove a truck and it was a bit jarring to figure out the back when parking it in reverse. However, wasn’t that difficult and after a couple of tries it was OK.

On extra space utilization, of course all the time. Even bringing in monthly groceries is easy. The whole trunk can be filled with stuff. Or seats can be pulled down to haul furniture, plants, dead hookers, maids etc. quite easily.

I have an 08 XTerra.

Before that, all I owned were little econoboxes until I was like 22. Then I owned mostly sports cars, then 24 on was mostly 2 seater sports cars. Needed a larger vehicle, so finally got an SUV back in 2016. I'm now on my 2nd 08 XTerra and will likely have a truck/SUV forever.

I use it to haul lots of wheels/tires around, car parts, my buddies and I on trips (pack it full of gear/ski equipment), haul stuff to the landfill, and tow my motorcycle to the track. I've also hauled large things from the hardware store and loaned it out to my buddies if they needed it. My friends and I all have 4wd vehicles now and are going to start doing overlanding trips this year too. I'm constantly folding the seats down or completely removing the rear seats. The 4WD is nice for Iowa winters too. Not needed, but sure is nice.

Didn't take me any time at all to get use to the size/handling. Don't really have a reason for that, it just didn't bother me.

got the old escalade and still love it

drove a e250 econoline van for years at work
and had 3 4x4 K5 blazers

a Mazda CX-30 is a compact

over here every mom and her dog drives one of these fugly suvs nowadays. I friggin hate them. The thing is, that 99,99% of the people who buy one never ever utilize them, it's just a fad because everyone has one. On top of that our parking spaces aren't really layed out for that size, so you have a lot of "fun" parking next to one, because most drivers can't park for sh*t with these monstrosities.

On a sidenote, i've noticed that wagon variants are becoming a lot cheaper than the normal ones, which also is a strange trend. I've had countless conversations with friends about that and they always said that they would've preferred the normal ones, but got the wagon instead (although they have no need for the extra space) simply because they were way cheaper.

I'm the other way around: I prefer riding my motorcycle, with as little vehicle around me as possible. That's only in perfect weather conditions though (dry, 15 degrees+, up to an hour's ride). :bleh:

I may be more sensitive to driving height adjustments.

Sounds like you give it a workout!!

I'm particular regarding driving. I consider my Mom's Subaru Forrester to be a straight up SUV. At least that thing had space inside. The CX 30 was comically claustrophobic and dark inside, especially considering the stupidly long front end housing an I4 lol.

*Insert obligatory maid joke*

At least the space is getting used.

G Wagons are crimes against nature.

I did drive a tarus wagon from the 94 for a bit when I was much younger. I used to be able to fit two walk behind mowers in that thing, tables, you name it. Driving position and handling was completely car like though, despite is fat ass. Visibility was also excellent, something a lot of these low roofed CUVs probably have worse.

I love driving small sport cars, but having a truck as my DD is so nice. I love being able to haul large items to and from the house. This is my second truck, and I don't think I'll ever go back to a sedan. Just too convenient owning a truck.

Isnt the CX-30 just a lifted MAzda3 more or less? So it would be size competitive with the Corolla.....

That thing is not a big vehicle.

Big vehicles would be like a CX-9, a Tundra, F150, Suburban, etc.

They're just gargantuan and i hate them.

Oh its bigger all right. Not a car. Bigger on the outside but too small on the inside. Nearly no point to the extra size and weight as far as I could tell while driving.

Are you sure its a CX30 and not a CX-5 or something that's bigger?

The official specs show the CX30 to be 10inches SHORTER than a 2017 corolla......

I mean it may look chunkier because its basically a lifted Mazda3 but it cant feel that much bigger if at all.... (or as you say it feels a bit smaller on the inside or its outside size)

Cuz if you think that's a larger vehicle......you're gonna HATE HATE HATE anything in the midsize or larger class lol.

While I lived out west(Texas, Washington state and Louisiana) I didn't give the size of my full sized pickup a second thought. Now living on the east coast I wouldn't want the headache of a big vehicle as a daily driver.

I guarantee it bc I had to set up the appointment and had all the paperwork for the stupid company car lol.

I know I would IF, IF IF IF, I just bought it for myself/SO to share.

For other uses, I'm sure I could accommodate.

It could be a instance of me just really not liking the CX 30 in any respect..... Whose idea was the stupid twist nob control thing?????

500 to 800 pounds more (this was the lux version so heavier) far larger wheels, etc.

Wait, this post was about a Mazda CX30?

People consider that a large vehicle? That's just a car.

Yeah that's why i thought it was odd he said big vehicle and mentioned a CX30....and why i asked if he made a mistake whiach apparently he didnt.

I can't imagine what he'd think of a vehicle that is truly enourmous, like a truck or a minivan. Hell just a size up to midsize (like a camry) he'd probably panicking about how big it is lol.

Its a CUV. A height raised car for no reason, especially considering the cabin space. Technically not car and not marketed as such.

I've driven U Haul vans and trucks. Didn't like it but I understood them. This raised car thing with no space inside was/is stupid.

My old car was a Hyudai Sonata (2009) and I drove it for over 6 years before gifting it to my brother. No panicking any of those years : )

They're useless, and I still have no clue why people buy them (CUVS). Same size as a hatch back, can't go off road, worse areo dynamics/handling. What's the point?
