Neogaf imploding over allegations of sexual misconduct

This weekend NeoGAF had a lot of downtime, related to allegations of sexual misconduct regarding it's owner, resulting in moderators mass resigning from the site leaving it in chaos.

NeoGAF is (or was) the most influential gaming forum on the net. Everyone from game developers to industry insiders to marketing shills used the forum to spread information usually related to the gaming industry. Quite a few big name publishers had staff who had direct contact with influential members there, for purposes anywhere from information sharing, marketing, (or allegedly bribery and astroturfing).

While NeoGAF was an excellent place for information and news related to the gaming industry, in recent years however it began to get more and more politicized, to the point where censorship and mass bannings were a regular event. Anyone not agreeing with the 'SJW' line of thinking tended to be ostracized from the community. I never had an account there but used to read that forum a lot, and while it was great for gaming news it got more and more annoying in recent years the way the SJW nonsense seeped into every part of the site, no matter if its gaming, movies, off topic, whatever - there were always some people in there posting SJW politics, and moderators banning anyone who disagreed with them.

The site has had a long history of controversy, but it seems recent allegations broke the camel's back. From wikipedia "In 2017, following a sexual harassment scandal involving Tyler Malka, most of its moderation staff resigned. Notably, many prominent users posted "suicide threads" wherein they demanded to be banned from the forum. After news of the scandal spread widely, many of its users fled to Reddit and 4chan's /v/ board. [5] As of Oct. 21 2017, 8 moderators and 1 administrator has resigned/been banned."

NeoGaf Mods Resign Amid Claims Of Sexual Misconduct Committed By Owner

"NeoGaf owner Tyler Malka has a sordid history of being a sexual harasser. These claims were oftentimes buried or squashed by the moderators on the popular gaming forum in order to protect Malka. Well, additional claims of sexual misconduct have surfaced." (full article)

More information on some of the shady stuff that went on behind the scenes can be found in this article on Nick Monroe's 5 part article NeoGAF's Shadows, encyclopediadramatica's entry on it's owner, and the twitter hashtag.

Anyone familiar with the history of NeoGAF and some of it's admins/moderators will find some of this news quite ironic. But that's a long story to get into. Even if that forum does survive this incident, some serious damage has been done, and some of the articles on this state that they expect other gaming communities to see a surge in their userbase from people migrating away from the site.

The forum is a cess pool, and while it was good to get quick news on games, the place also was also a snowflake orgy. :bleh:

Also if I remember correctly a prior Moderator was a pedophile who they also protected.

Be interesting to see what happens. Was a pretty large game hub for people, and I know quite a few devs/PR people posted there. I never thought it was all that genuine though, but that's only from a handful of visits.

It will be hard for that site to remain a safe space on the interwebs with that **** as an owner.

I m gonna miss the good info gaming wise and the entertaining sports threads but **** them for their attitude, the mods, owners and long time members. They really believed that neogaf and the people there were superior.

Oh well.... :)

Neogaf like someone else posted was a cesspool but had good info from insider leaks. If you didn't go with the flow u got bann'd. Let them clean house and get better mods or change ownership. Hate seeing any website go down.

I thought being required to have a non-free email id for registration purposes was a 100% surefire method of keeping out sex offenders.

No?

Well its back. Its probably the owners main source of income so Im not surprised its back in less than a week. There are too many people there for them all to leave and most of them feel like NeoGaf is home. The numbers will drop off but they will stay steady IMO. If they anted to up numbers they could just open registration like normal forums and the numbers would sky rocket.

Without the mods that were there the place won't be the same to the weirdos that frequented it. However I do think this reformed version will be better. Less witch hunts/psycho politics.

Thousands Of NeoGAF Users Flock To New Website

"Last weekend’s NeoGAF implosion was upsetting to anyone who enjoyed reading and posting on the influential gaming message board. Fortunately for them, a new option has already emerged.

On Wednesday night a group of former GAF users launched ResetEra, a clean new message board with sections for discussing video games and other topics.... And the site is already full of threads that resemble NeoGAF before last week’s implosion." (source)

I stopped by to check it out, and the statistics are certainly impressive, with 20k+ registrations and 200k posts in 3 days, becoming one of the most active gaming forums almost overnight.

The political nonsense seems to be gone or at least to a minimum, while neogaf seems to be dying a slow death. I know this is a bit off-topic, but with the number of industry insiders that posted accurate information on there, it's actually relevant to anyone interested in keeping up to date with the gaming industry.
