Game Collecting

Since I'm fortunate enough to be pretty financially stable and solvent right now i don't think I'd ever consider selling any of my collection. I'd have to be desperately in need of cash. I just don't see it that way. Its a collection for personal enjoyment to me, not an investment.

The value of my collection doesn't have any bearing on anything for me. Aside from my original games i bought at retail, they pretty much were all acquired for pennies on the dollar from local game hunting and i would always sell or trade off any duplicates I'd obtain in large lots which would more often than not recoup most or all of my costs. I was at a point where i had a good system going that funded my collecting so i hardly ever had to put any money into it.

Then you're in it for the right reasons.

The $$ attached to some of the things I had.... that sealed the fate of everything I sold. (sealed the deal for my old Baseball cards too, which are worthless)

I used to troll yard sales in my early-late 20s, I would troll library sales and thrift stores until I was 30. I used to get deals on things I actually wanted in those years, especially at libraries.

Early 30s have been pretty brutal, with this past year being a garbage show where just having to think about things that sit around was a big mental drain.

I actually really enjoy (and miss) doing the yard sales and thrift stores. Its actually another big part of why I love collecting. No matter how wealthy I get in life I will still always like browsing second hand items for sale. It feels great to find an awesome treasure in a pile of junk.

Wanted to share this documentary series since I think its so fantastic.

Analog Frontiers. New part 3 just released couple days ago.

I have the HD Retrovision cable for Sega Genesis to use on my Sony Trinitron. I think it makes a nice noticeable improvement. I imagine its as close to PVM quality as I'm likely to get for CRT gaming.

Yeah the Genesis does look great with the Retrovision cables. Do you have the model 2 Genesis? The model 1 needs an adapter and that’s the part I don’t like. Maybe mine is faulty but it’s hard to get the connection just right.

I have both a model 1 and model 2 Genesis. Several actually, due to my retro game horder mentality. :bleh:

But yes, I got the adapter to use the cable with the model 1. The model 1 does sound slightly noticeably better to my ears. I think they cheapened out on the sound chip in the model 2, so of course it always feels lacking to me when playing on the model 2.

I've been collecting these promotional VHS tapes from Nintendo. There's 10 total, and I've currently got 4.

Nice, I remember those VHS tapes for sure. They were sent out to Nintendo Power subscribers, right? Looking at the volumes list I subscribed from the first issue in 1988 until sometime around 1994. I think I did receive that DK Country tape but I don't know what happened to mine. Lost forever I guess.

Yeah, they definitely went out to Nintendo Power subscribers. I know for sure I have the Donkey Kong Country video. I want to think I have 1 or 2 not in that photo, but don't remember what they are.

After taking the entirety of last summer off from yard sales I decided to try getting back out there Saturday, if anything just to check things out and enjoy the nice weather we are finally getting. I mapped a route of only 10 sales to visit in my town and a couple surrounding towns.

First sale I stop at had these games at $4/each, and the games in the second picture had the added bonus of still being sealed! The big one is of course Def Jam Fight For NY. Super rare to find this game sealed, and right now is selling for around $500.

I am trying to decide WTF to do with it. I do have some sealed games I've found over the years, but I don't consider myself a sealed game collector. Right now I'm leaning towards trying to trade it for expensive NES/SNES/Genesis games I need. I have posts up on local FB video game groups but I may end up taking it to a local game store. They will definitely offer more trade in credit for this game right now, given how sealed prices are skyrocketing.

Good start to the season. I just hope I didn't have all my luck on the first day.

One thing I've been doing lately is rebuilding broken NES consoles using the Nesessity 1.3 board.

I've done one so far, I've got 2 more boards. Salvaging the clock chip, CPU, and PPU from the broken ones. Here's the other 2 boards, one of them looks mint but I've not been able to get it to work, even after doing a re-cap, the other one was in a horribly neglected NES we got for free a long time back.

It's not exactly cheap to do, but you wind up with a machine that can technically run a Famicom Disk System (though you need adapters to get the RAM adapter to fit), and can easily be upgraded to an HDMI NES. Considering the build is with modern capacitors and components it should also work a lot longer than the original NES.

Originally bought only one board, but I liked the experience so much decided to get on the wait list and ordered 2 more as soon as they came back in stock. The board also has a built on microphone, so you can play Famicom games that support that feature as well, though you have to yell into your NES
