Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal, and a "catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix Holdings" for $300 million.

Appears things will be looking up for these studios that have been languishing under Square Enix's control. $300 million is quite the steal for these studios and included IP.

Supposedly Square Enix will be using the proceeds to invest in NFT garbage.

Damn, was just about to post this.
Pretty big news. Lots of IP
They already own a ton of studios via other takeovers (deep silver, 4A, Aspyr are a few that come to mind).

I really havent heard anything negative about embracer takeovers, but time will tell.

So Squeenix has pared down to basically its RPG business now?

They'd better hope they dont drop some RPG turds if thats the case.

According to most gaming sites, they dropped a big one recently. Bablyon's Fall.

Their prices were insane (on some of their games). And they did Marvel game? Yea that was a turd of a game..

"dropped" being the most apt way to describe the crazily generic, boring and ugly looking game that it is.

Yes... they are very out of touch. Their press release on this kinda sums up just how doom'ed they are.

Square press release said:
The acquisition brings a compelling pipeline of new installments from beloved franchises and original IPs, including a new Tomb Raider game. The acquisition builds on Embracer’s mission of creating a leading independent global gaming and entertainment ecosystem. Embracer has been particularly impressed by the studios’ rich portfolio of original IP, housing brands with proven global potential such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, as well as demonstrating the ability to create AAA games with large and growing fan bases. There are compelling opportunities to organically grow the studios to maximize their commercial opportunities.

Kinda glad that Juice Ex is getting another game but also worried it will be a pretty low budget effort.

hopefully a new tomb raider is just more like the 2013 one.

Now only if they picked up Ubisoft. I dont think M$ can pick buy Ubi and get away with regulatory approval.

Let’s hope they make a proper Tomb Raider game where Lara mass murders dinos while riding them. :bleh:

We don't know about a new DeuSex, is there something I missed? Maybe someone will even finish Mankind Divided's story...

TR 2013 was good. TR 2015 was great. TR 2018 was kinda crap, so I'm hoping to blame Square Enix for that one, given the overall view that they seem to be like the Japanese version of EA.

Also worth noting Square Enix is only the publisher on Bablyon's Fall. It was developed by PlatinumGames. Which is kind of weird it turned out so bad as they have made some good games with solid game-play and visuals (Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata etc)

Oh well. Not the first time we have seen SquareEnix make odd ball moves.

Unfortunately that was just taken out of context.

Update on the article said:
Update: The comment about reviving the Deus Ex IP as Eidos Montreal’s first Embracer game was unfortunately taken out of context. Eidos Montreal studio head David Anfossi was describing the studio’s history and how Deus Ex: Human Revolution became the studio’s first game. The studio does have several projects in progress at the moment but we don’t know if any of them will be a new Deus Ex game.
