This has been hinted at and speculated at in the past, but now there's more solid confirmation from legitimate news sources.

'Call of Duty' Sets Sights on a Fee

"Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play."

""Call of Duty" is in a unique position to seek a monthly fee from customers. The game's previous installment, set during the Cold War and called "Call of Duty: Black Ops," was the best-selling game last year, with global retail sales of more than $1 billion during its first six weeks on shelves." Couple of quotes from Robert Bowling from twitter

"COD ELITE is free, for all players, some paid aspects TBD. Absolutely NO fee to play #MW3 multiplayer. Detailed reveal coming tomorrow AM."

"I disagree. A perfect example is PSN. It's free for everyone, but there are paid aspects to it. Is Playstation Network not free?"

"Absolutely not. Nothing is being charged for that was previously free. More details coming in the morning. Give it a read."

I will wait for more details, I suspect you can pay monthly for free map packs? Pay for customisation options?

Oh yeah definitely you'll have access to the utmost basic MP without paying the monthly fee. The trailer for Elite has leaked but Activision is taking them down as soon as some site puts it up.

good that i really never that interested in COD series. i guess cod fans will still pay for subscription that should be something Free in the first place.

They will probably sell game enhancements or customization options, along with map packs. If they are bold, they will sell items that make goals easier to achieve, or straight up sell those goals.

We'll see.

if that is the case, they should really releases COD mw3 for free.

This kind of stuff has been done in alot of Free game + optional subscription

A tons of Korean shooter game offer the same thing. But then the game it self is free.

Its all heading down the road anyway, so im not surprised at all that MW3 will have some kind of monthly fee attached. I just hope gamers reject it, but I know they won't, because they are mostly stupid. Its the same with pay per view sporting events. I used to love watching boxing on ITV, however Sky then came in and bought some of the rights, fair enough, but then they got greedy and moved most boxing matches onto pay per view. I'm sorry, but if no one bought it, then they would have lost a shed load of money and they wouldn't have attempted it again.

Well I need more info to decide if this is a deal breaker or not, but right now if I buy the game for the Xbox 360 (which I will be) I pay for the game, an xbox live gold subscription and a subscription fee to get features that would usually be free or DLC?...hmmmm nope I don't think so...

They better be some damn stellar features like new maps every month or some shiz I can't even think of, then I may consider it. But it doesn't bode well...

More of a reason for me to go back to the battlefield series. Monthly fee? No thanks... I have enough bills that need to be paid monthly.

If this is true I hope the free MP isn't stripped of central features and boring. And there had better be servers. :(

In the first month or two taht I play the game I might pay. But really...? If the sold 1 billion copies why do they need to charge more money for a couple maps. They should have to work harder to sell a new game and make another billion.

Seems like a death wish but I guess I'll wait for more info to pass complete judgement.

I have jinxed this. 10 bucks says these Activision nubs gonna get ass raped. Considering only 6000-10000 people play CoD games online regularly; I am sure they are going to lose a lot more than that as customers due to this crap.

I think your numbers are a little wrong - 200,000 to 800,000 are online at one time playing COD: Black Ops on the Xbox 360 alone, per week.

I see. Dayem. Then it does make sense to have subs. My numbers were PC only from what the game reports when I am on.

Yeh it's pretty massive on the 360 and PS3...

To add to that some estimates place sales of the game (Black Ops) as reaching 18 million units sold over all platforms - lets say 2% of that (a pretty conservative number) buy into a subscription - for 2 years thats a revenue of $69 million from subscription alone. (based on $7.99 a month). As well as games sales earning a revenue of $818 million. A nice little earner really, they know what they are doing and it's going to happen, as more than 2% of the COD players out there are dumbtards.

But saying that if they make it worthwhile and give me a good reason for subscribing I will, but it's got to be better than stats, skins and photo uploading abilities. (Which we get for free right now in Black Ops...)
