Catalyst freezes my computer. Can't update drivers without it?

I have an emachines slim desktop PC. It has windows 7, 64 bit. It is 1 year old. It has AMD Athlon II X2 220 dual-core processor 3GB DDR3 memory. 1 TB hard drive. It came with built in video but I eventually purchased the MSI R6570 2GB DDR3 graphics card. It was the best low profile card that I could find, at the time, that would fit in my very slim case. It installs just fine with the disk however I cannot update my drivers to the current ones because it requires catalyst and every time I install catalyst and do the required reboot it completely freezes my computer. Then I have to hold the power button to turn it off and reboot into safe mode to uninstall catalyst.

A few days ago I got something nasty on my computer that got around my antivirus (and malwarebytes didnt pick it up either). It crashed my computer so I had to wipe it and reinstall windows. Now I am running on the basics. Windows 7 and nothing else. I used the disk to get my video card working but I need updated drivers (right now everything looks generic) and, once again, catalyst crashed my computer. For whatever reason my computer does not like catalyst.

Is there any way to update my drivers to the most current one WITHOUT catalyst or does anyone here know of a way to get catalyst to work without it freezing my computer?

When you begin the function to Install the drivers, when you get to the point where it gives you the option to choose, CUSTOM, do so. Then, in the list, uncheck the Catalyst Control Center and anything else and ONLY opt to install the Display Drivers. See if that gets your video working properly.

Good luck!

One other option, which I almost NEVER recommend, is to use Windows Update to select hardware drivers. Be careful if you do this. But, if you do see an option for newer Display Drivers from there, you can try that, too.

The biggest problem with not installed the CCC is that you won't have any control over the 3D settings and the video settings. This can makes games and videos look very crappy, since the default settings are definitely not the best settings.

And, things look even worse if the drivers don't install at all, right? Let's get the drivers installed and then see if the system still freezes. One step at a time in a situation like this.

if CCC is crashing, it's because of .NET problems.

He said his PC is completely freezing up on reboot. In all the times I had CCC not able to start, it never once locked up my PC. I simply couldn't get CCC to start. So, unless he posts back, we won't know exactly what the problem is. But, from what he said, I don't think it's .NET related.

Yep, if fresh install OS, then make sure to uncheck the Windows Update automatic and click "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", so Windows Update won't start automatically to install the driver.
