black screen after windows 10 upgrade

Trying to help uncle with his pc.
It's a custom built Asrock/core i7/onboard intel hd4000(I believe).
He did a Windows 10 upgrade (From Windows 8) by downloading the upgrade app from Microsoft.com. It went through all the installation process and everything but now the pc is getting stuck after Windows square logo and the spinny circle. It seems like it's not loading explorer.exe because I can see the mouse cursor and move it around. I've Windows key+p, nothing. ctrl alt delete and cntrol shift escape don't do anything either. I also tried plugging in an pcie express video card to bypass the intel graphics (due to possible driver issue) but I get the same behaviour.

ANy help appreciated.

Try also asking in the Windows 10 thread.

I think I can remember at least one person there that was having a similar issue.

Tried to look for it but couldn't find much.
Another thing I've found is that if i hit the shift key five times, the "Sticky Keys' dialog pops up. So it's kinda working, but I can't figure out what's the hold up.

Have you tried forcing it to restart? I have heard stories of the installation getting "stuck" and a power cycling got it going again. Worth a try I guess.

I'm back baby. **** ya!
meteor, you were on the right track. I read about the genius dirty reset/shutdown method by somebody online to force Windows advanced repair setting. After a couple of force shutdowns/hitting the reset button on the pc tower I was then able to do a reset back to previously installed Windows after a couple of scary bsods/automatic repair screens.

I think it could be the graphics driver. Uninstall the Intel if you want to do the upgrade. I have the same GPU and had this after completing the installation. I got it working after uninstalling the driver in safemode. I don't have that issue anymore either the Updated driver fixed it or one the Windows update patch.

After I backed up the files , I just did a clean install of windows 10 and everything went smoothly. The previous intall of the operating system was definitely corrupted. SFC was giving unfixable error messages, etc.
I just nuked and paved it.
