In November 2020, the Xbox Series X|S consoles launched with the Auto HDR feature which automatically upgrades your backwards compatible games from SDR to HDR to take advantage of this amazing display innovation and provide a richer visual experience even on already-released games.

Today we’re excited to bring you a preview of Auto HDR for your PC gaming experience and we’re looking for your help to test it out. Jump to the How to Enable Auto HDR section to get started! When enabled on your HDR capable gaming PC, you will automatically get awesome HDR visuals on an additional 1000+ DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games!

Auto HDR for PC is currently a preview feature only available in the Windows Insider Program (Dev Channel). To experience this feature now, you’ll want to click here to join and get access to build 21337 or above.

Ah this is great, make HDR available in game automatically.

No thank you. I've read the above blog and I think it would be great if you have a HDR100 certified monitor but for anything less it's not going to work. I have a HDR400 certified monitor and when I loaded Division 2 the colours were so washed out and the picture so bad I thought the monitor was broke. I'd only had it a day. It was only when I checked the games video settings did I realise that HDR was on (auto) and I immediately switched it off. Game then looked great so breathed sigh of relief the monitor wasn't broken. Same with BFV it looked absolutely dreadful with HDR auto on.

I've never enabled HDR on my Windows desktop so don't know if that makes a difference but most of the reviews I read for the monitor said just forget HDR which is what I have done. I didn't buy the monitor for HDR so not bothered. Maybe in the future decent HDR might percolate down to HDR400 monitors but I doubt it. TBH can't believe some manufacturers even label their monitors as HDR100 which is a total joke.

I must say it's piqued my interest in the XSeriesX as I own a 50" 4K TV with HDR10 and games look much better on my XboneX when HDR is enabled. Not that you can actually buy a XseriesX but if I stumble on one I'll probably buy it.

HDR400 is literally a joke though, all it does is crank up the brightness of the entire screen to 100%.

Obviously you need a display that can produce good HDR, like your TV.. It's the same tech as used in the Xbox SeriesX.

I think it'll be great to have the option of HDR in almost any game.
