A Good Quality Headphone Setup

Hapa, what you think of the nV graphics announcement?

Come over to gen graphics and gives us your thoughts. :)

I ordered the DT770 Pro from your recommendations and reading the reviews, went with the close 250 ohm version as I want the best audio quality possible.

Next question, what should I go for in regards to a soundcard:

1.) Sound Blaster AE5 Plus
2.) Sound Blaster GC7

Looking at those two, swapped back to my Sound Blaster X3 for now with my Game Zero headset and it just destroys the SXFI Theater.

I'd go AE5 Plus. I really like my AE5.

I just looked up the AE5 Plus out of curiosity, and I see it talking about DTS encoding. I had a lot of trouble getting PC surround speakers to work on my setup with an older SounderBlaster Z series (it worked flawlessly through my Denon reciever).

Will this fix whatever was going on and let me finally get surround again? Does anyone know anything about this? I'll buy immediately if that's the case.

EDIT: I just checked my sound card and it talks about the same DD Live and DTS encoding, but the **** never worked.

You have connect the sound card via SPDIF/Optical. I would test, but I don't have the adapter to test it (my box got thrown away by mistake and I lost both my light strip and a bunch of other things that might have been in the box :().

What am I connecting to the sound card via SPDIF/Optical?

The PC speakers don't have those connections. They are the Logitech Z506

Some PC speaker setups like the Logitech Z5500 have their own built in decoders, but this setup doesn't. I was relying on the sound card to do the work as advertised, but could never get it to do that.

I believe you have to set the Windows Sound Options to Dolby Atmos to enable the encoder. Under sound properties in the control panel and the setup and choose atmos .

But you have to be using optical/spdif out on the soundcard.

The 506 does not support optical so you are only able to use 5.1 by the designated RCA or headphone jack plugs. You might be able to find a converted from optical to rca.

If your using PC speakers like those, then they connect directly to the sound-cards 5.1 analog outputs to the speaker 5.1 analog inputs(3 mini-plugs with stereo on each plug for L/R, Rear L/R, Center/Sub. These are the green, black and orange coloured connections on the Z506 sub). You don't need to utilize Dolby or DTS at all. You then set the sound-card to 5.1 and your ready to rock.

So connections C,D and E in this diagram on the AE-5.

DTS and Dolby Encoding are purely for digital connections to speakers systems that have Dolby or DTS decoders. Like most home audio receivers.

*edit* I just realized this card has a standard optical out . Shows how often I've looked at the connection on the card lol

Right, but I could never get it to work. I miss surround sound.

When my Denon receiver was hooked up to it in my old office, it was cake. All I did was run the HDMI from the video card straight to it and it did all the work. It was soooo simple.

So I bought 2 versions from Beyer Dynamic.

DT770 Pro
DT990 Pro

Both versions are 250ohm and I returned both. Although loud I found the audio quality real real tinny sound out of both. Funny thing is the DT990 Pro had a little more base even though they are open back.

No ammount of EQ could fix this.

So coming from an Senheiser Game Zero 50 Ohm and an SXFI Theater 32 Ohm. What would be comparrable in that price ranges at 250 - 300 Ohm at around $300?

I know I know HD650 but I ain't paying $600...

Basically the HD650s on sale for 219

And if you end up not liking those, alternatives from HiFiman would be from cheapest to highest...

HE-5XX (Also a DROP collab and often compared to the 6xx)
Sundara
XS Edition.

Interesting. That's very opposite of the Beyer sound profile, so surprised to hear that.

Yeah, I agree with what the others are saying. If the 250 ohm Beyers sound tinny, so will any other high impedance headphone.

Chances are its the thing powering them that's the issue.

I power my DT1990s with an AE-5. I don't know what could cause "tinny". I'd imagine Hapa knew to change the impedance in the Creative CP to "High" mode so the amp supplied the correct power.

I have never had tinny. I'd also hope he was using Direct mode, but a bit late since he already returned.

Oh well!

Yeah I changed the impedence in the CP, latest drivers and CP software as well.

Got the Massdrop's yesterday and my God do these things ****ing slap. Playing the MW2 campaign and every sound is just ****ing awesome.

I was also listening to a podcast last night and I thought my furnace was acting up, there was this sound in the podcast in the background that really sounded like it was in the room.

Next up MODI/MAGNI combo for the YouTube channel.
