GeForce GTX 580 is GF100b, not GF110?

Carsten Spille, write for PC Games Hardware and blogger on gpu-tech.org has published a little note about GTX 580 and it's core codename. Apparently when using a bios flash tool, the core we know as GF110 is reported as GF100b - as Charlie D reported some time ago.

http://www.gpu-tech.org/content.php/144-…and-GF110s-real-name-is-GF100B

Do we care? Is this more ammo for the 'Charlie was right' crowd? Are these values hardcoded into the tool, and as such meaningless? Was it intentionally put in as GF100b to throw people off the scent of GF110 and expose a leak?

Charlie is alot of things but precise is NOT one of them. :bleh:

However one judge his anti-nV crusade, he's good with predictions and facts.

I don't mind him jumping on nV. Every company should have a stalker like him, better for quality than ISO norms:D - knowing that someone watches your every move.

May be wrong ofc.

It's obvious that Charlie has sources; it's just his contexts that may be extreme to me. The Internet is a better place with him than without him.

He creates discussion and talking points. Brings data and his flair to the masses. I really mean, I'll take any data point and don't ignore them because even the most biased person or one-sided view can still bring an important data point.

I understand, with the context that is nVidia, the context is probably off and not objective, but through the layers of pin-wheeling, a context for worse case, doom-and-gloom, sprinkled with some disingenuous, there may be a data point in there that needs to be coded out -- and seeing positive through the vile and venom, hehe!:)

He probably is and gave you an opportunity to showcase your review abilities, which was nice to see! It's just when the subject is nVidia; it gets so personal for him, sadly.

That's what I don't care for.

Charlie's a good guy, I think you'd feel differently about him if you met him.

I don't dislike him personally, I question his professionalism.

Exactly so I don't trust what he writes since it's got a heavy coating of vendetta.

I give him credit for being mostly correct on G100 but he'd be taken much more seriously if he wrote more like a professional and less like a hater fanboi.

Just my .02.

It's not really about trust to me but data and can work around other mind-sets. It's just like in life. A lot of people are onions and need to peel the layers to find out what they're all about. If you rush to judgement, one may be missing out on a person that may amaze or bring quality to ones life. It's so easy to rip down a building or person but much harder to build up.

Like I said, it's not personal and I don't think anyone should have to "peel the layers" of a "journalist".

Let's get back on topic, does anyone care if the 580 is 100b or 110? I sure don't as the 580 is a great product. I hope the 6970 gives it enough competition so prices come down.
