AMD AMD Radeon HD 7950 Gets Turbo - new BIOS for reference boards

AMD has applied it's Turbo magic to the AMD Radeon HD 7950, with a new BIOS that turns on Power Tune Turbo boost when used with AMD Catalyst 12.7b and newer drivers.

This new BIOS is for use with AMD reference design boards only, as AIB partner customizations may need specific BIOS tweaks that aren't included in the AMD BIOS. As such you can look for new versions of the AMD Radeon HD 7950 with the new Turbo BIOS on them later this week, and early next week.

You can download the BIOS here. If you chose to download and install this BIOS, you do so at your own risk, with no liability, culpability or responsibility to Rage3D.com, it's staff or affiliates.

To flash the BIOS, run as administrator with the card under it's BIOS 1 position - see the markings on the back of your card, the switch should be furthest away from the CrossFireX edge connectors.

The new bios increases the base clock from 800MHz to 850MHz with a turbo frequency of 925MHz. These new features and performance won't work unless you're using the AMD Catalyst 12.7b drivers, or newer.

If you encounter problems, move your BIOS switch to the 2 position and reboot, to use the original launch BIOS. GPU-z can save your existing BIOS if you want to preserve it, for later reflashing.

looks like about 5-10% on avg perf increase .. largely depending on resolution and title.. so a 5% increase for FREE = good in my book, unless you read a particular canadien site that seems to imply that a free upgrade = bad go figure.

I spoke with AMD today about the BIOS and just wanted to remind everyone this is designed to work only with AMD Reference design boards. It is not known if AIB partners will issue BIOS updates for their existing cards as well as changing to the new BIOS going forward.

You can always hope some kind souls gets one of the new 7950's with Boost when they are available next week and dumps the bios on TPU or something, and it's from the same model card you've got.
