I couid see excess running off on the ends. Don't know how that would work.

To me it looks like the dot method was the best solution. IMO.

I like the sticky. It is a common thing I am sure people wonder about and the video shows the results of the different methods pretty clearly.

I do suspect that air bubbles introduced in the spread method probably work out over time. As the CPU gets hot and cools I believe the air will expand and push out. As the CPU cools the air pocket will drop in pressure and allow the thermal compound to move in. You can see this happen to airbubbles on screen protectors as they disappear over time. Would be cool to test this to see for sure.

I can only hope so. I would never buy a direct contact cooler. It looks like such a pita. Well, now I'm really fond of these little low cost liquid coolers like the H50 and H60.

Direct Contact is much better than traditional method of a solid block (esp. a solid block of aluminum). I don't know why you consider it a PITA, it's no different to mount from any other cooler. Self contained liquid coolers are more of a pain to mount.

Best way to apply thermal paste for coolers with a smooth contact surface and avoid air "bubbles" is and has always been one pea sized drop in the center, and then apply the cooler. The pressure will spread the paste evenly.

The method I've been using a lot is to apply it with a plastic card (like a credit card). I spread it out evenly with the card then add a very, very small drop to the center for good measure.

LOL, well been looking online since i posted this and people recommend isopropyl. Also been looking at some places and they say a thin line then just put hsf back on and twist. I do have another question, how long before you can boot up the pc after you apply the paste? im assuming since its paste right away so please correct me if im wrong.

70% or 91% or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol should do it fine. I've used 70% one and just let it dry for a few minutes after clean up the old paste. You should boot up your pc after you apply the paste only if you install your CPU cooler correctly. It should be fine. I don't see any reason why should you wait before boot up after apply the paste.
