Apple and privacy

I like the direction they're going. Granted there will always be some form of tracking I think, but this seems a huge step in the right direction. This might even sell me on an iphone.

“Too may are still asking the question ‘how much can we get away with?’ when we should be asking ‘what are the consequences?’ What are the consequences of not just tolerating but rewarding content that undermines public trust in life-saving vaccinations? What are the consequences of seeing thousands of users join extremist groups and then perpetuating an algorithm that recommends more?” he said Thursday.

Speaking at a virtually held International Conference on Computers, Privacy & Data Protection, Cook said it’s “time to stop pretending that this approach doesn’t come with a cost” — of polarization, lost trust and “yes, of violence.”

“A social dilemma cannot be allowed to become a social catastrophe,” he added, referring to the Netflix documentary about technology’s — and especially social media’s — corrosive effects on society.

Apple is getting ready to to roll out a new privacy control in the early spring to prevent iPhone apps from secretly shadowing people. That puts the feature on course to come out after a more than six-month delay aimed at placating Facebook and other digital services that depend on such data surveillance to help sell ads.

Google still hasnt updated their apps on the iOS app store yet. It has been a month since their last update when their apps used to update weekly. They are required to tell users how they are being tracked with this next update which is why they have been doing so.


Google has been telling people to use their new sdk so Im pretty sure they have found a work around on Apples privacy **** even if it is enabled this spring.

I'd be surprised if Google didn't have a work around already. Big money at stake here, but as far as I'm concerned, this is something other manufacturers ought to really be following Apple's lead on. I hate dealing with privacy concerns, but it's here to stay, for a while anyway.

i'm sure Google maps and like will stop working as soon as you turn this on
