I thin Microsoft learned it's lesson. They have acquired some really good developers and if they can deliver a really good launch lineup for the first 3 months of the console I think they can really take a solid chunk of this next gen

It's a beast for sure and I'd get one...but I know in 1-2 years consoles are already dated (talking purely specs) Plus I can play all the games on my pc. However for console only gamers this is a mich jump in all regards, CPU, ssd, GPU etc

One cool thing they could potentially do with xbone series x, when ssd memory prices come down, or when flash storage speeds go up, is they could sell games on 100gig cartridges. No need for a download then, and your game can be ready instantly when you plug it in. Gamestop would appreciate that, if they're still around after this year.

The Series X is going to be a very powerful system.

If anyone has watched Digital Foundry's breakdown of all the hardware and the various efficiencies this has vs. the One X you'll see that Series X is going to likely be well more than 2x as powerful as One X.

If I had to guess the launch price of the next consoles I'd say:

Series X $499 USD
PS5 $449 USD

I don't think Sony can sell for $399 and Microsoft won't let Sony have a big price advantage.

As for the PS5, it's not gonna be as fast as Sony says and all the numbers they've put out are the MAX things can go and won't be that way when software is running. I believe Microsoft beat them to the punch with a faster machine and Sony was scrambling (why you didn't hear from them for a long time) to overclock their system as much as possible to soften the blow...they were stuck with a certain power/heat envelope so there was only so much they could do. I believe the 9.2TF leaks were what the system was running before they made the changes

where sony has an advantage over Xbox right now is that microsoft is doing a lot of variable performance measures. These allow for better peak performance but will run into cases where it causes headaches for developers to tune for. Sony is just consistent (albeit slower) performance so a dev trying to build and optimize on the PS5 will have an easier time.

That makes no sense based on the information out there. The Series X has very specific clock speeds for the CPU (3.8GHz across all 8 cores, 3.6GHz with SMT enabled) and GPU (1.825GHz). These aren't peak clock speeds you might see briefly, they're sustained. No boost speed trickery. There's a known performance level and the entire system is designed around it (including the cooling solution). Where are all these "variable performance measures"?

You have that completely backwards...The Series X is locked at its frequencies while the PS5 Is going to be variable and the specs they listed are the MAX possible

I'm not sure why would Sony wants their GPU to run at variable clock, not static clock. I suspected something has to do with power consumption for power efficient...but again, if you play it all the day with a full power. Xbox Series X would be a good one. Why not?

If I understand correctly, PS5 uses a constant power usage, but devs can choose to split the ratio of power to the cpu vs gpu in different ways, whereas xbox locks in that ratio all the time. I doubt it'll make much difference, as PS5 only allows small changes in that ratio anyway, so any performance boosts will be minor.

One thing I'm a bit surprised about is that it seems that neither console has the capability to throttle overall performance based on actual usage... so your game will be running your console on full-burn all of the time... seems a bit extreme if you're just playing minecraft or a 2d game. I'm sure they'll have lower-power modes for the homescreen or sleep mode, but it sounds like in game there's no dyanimc power adjustment for either console.

Graphics has hit the point of diminishing returns. imo, this generation will be about framerates, m+k controls, more robust splitscreen options, etc.

Nothing m$ showed really looks "nextgen"... I'm not really sure that anything will. Maybe Halo, or some 1st party PS5 games?

It's not the graphics that I'm looking forward to but the loading from storage bandwidth. I want nice graphics, to be sure, but I think the more interesting possibilities will be opened up by being able to immediately transform whole worlds or extend sightlines to project big spaces they can't currently.

Eh, we don't know what it's capable of. Only what the marketing says. [email protected] is tough, and the specs of the systems aren't terribly convincing IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if we see lowered settings to achieve the 60fps though. That, I'd believe.
