Default R580 GPU now runs hotter than 12 months ago?

Not too sure why, but I have just realised why I was getting so many random CTD's. It appears that over the space of 12 months my X1900 has gotten worse in terms of thermal performance.

When I installed my Arctic X2 it could easily manage 712Mhz on the core no problem. Now it seems that it can't get over 676Mhz - ish.

Why is this happening?

Could be 2 things.

One is that dust will accumulate and act as an insulator. Clean your fans out.

Two is that even though your cooling solution is dissapating heat, your GPU is still running out of spec and is still producing a lot more heat than it should. You probably cooked your GPU- not a quick frying like a sudden spike in heat, more like a slow roasting over time. The 1900 series runs wicked hot at stock speeds even.

I have cleaned out all the dust from inside using a compressed air can, its totally free of dust.

I might try and re-seat the cooler, though getting it off was totally impossible the last time I attempted it, it seems to be attached by concrete.

Use an external desk fan blowing into the case to see if its just overheating, or another problem.

If all else fails, you could also remove the heatsink/fan and apply some Arctic Silver 5 or Céramique to the GPU and memory chips. Perhaps whatever thermal compound you applied when you installed your Arctic X2 has worn out.

Keep in mind that most thermal pastes dry out over time and need re-application. It could just be the case with yours. Take heatsink off, clean all residues from old paste, reapply, put back on, and make sure it sits even on the die. Don't put too much on!
