I suck at the internets. What is Reddit?

I know I'm getting up in age and possibly don't care to keep up with internets other than the most mainstream, but what is this site? Purpose? Use?

Awesome troll site. Second only to 4chan...

Zero Jul 30, 2012 12:59 PM

BackToPC Jul 30, 2012 01:05 PM

its not just news since you can do self posts to a subreddit

curio Jul 30, 2012 01:09 PM

I'm probably the only one on the entire intertubes that doesn't go there simply because I think the format is a mess.

Yeah it's like a giant forum with ranking and a huge user base. I did say "news" in quotes :bleh:

Nosferatu Jul 30, 2012 01:20 PM

It's delicious!
:upvote:

caveman-jim Jul 30, 2012 01:21 PM

it's an entirely user generated content site, so it does aggregration, reporting, discussion, reposts, knowledge sharing, marketing etc etc etc all in one spot.

I think Raz would like the photography subreddits (think of subforums). in a lot of different fields there are some very knowledgeable people but you've got to learn how to filter out the crap.

And of course he'll like gonewild.

Pornstar Yard Gnom Jul 30, 2012 01:22 PM

As an infojunkie

I use it quite a lot, but yes, the format is crazy (its old style message board, with nesting etc that is just junk to me)

THe AMA(ask me anything, where celebrities and people open them selves up to questions, Larry King was was great) and TIL are 2 I read a bunch, also there is a Identify this Bug/Identify this Plant section which is very useful.

iphone app i use is Alien Blue

Zero Jul 30, 2012 01:23 PM

the fitness section is kinda useful for fitness noobies

This. I hear people talking about it, and all I see is a mess of links and some 1990's style website. I couldn't figure out what the fuq I was suppose to be doing on it. Now I hear that Digg was the same thing, but died (I missed that boat I guess) and is about to relaunch. That's why I'm curious.

I hate reddit, at least 90 percent of it. I've realized a lot of whats on there is made up stories, and pictures that people try to pass as their own or the picture is strategically made to back up their bullshit stories, just for the upvotes mind you. The entire system revolves around just that, upvotes. As bad as 4chan is, it's a much better system as far as talking amongst each other, people don't get downvoted just because you didn't like what someone said.

Back on the bullshit posts and fake/stolen images, Reddit has an entire sub section dedicated for just that called "redditliars". So its not strange to see a post at the top get called out days later for being completely made up or stolen, it's happened many many times. I dunno, I just really hate the "me me me" attitude the site has.

Not to mention they are wayyy too political, even for a bleeding heart liberal myself, that place disgusts me

EDIT:

http://www.reddit.com/r/redditliars

isn't bad also.

Did going to the site and looking at it cross your mind? nvm

I am guessing you spent 20 seconds on it? I admit it is not the most straightforward format in the world, but after 2 minutes, you should be able to get it... It took my 9 year old brother 5 minutes to figure out how to navigate the site and get to where he needed. Obvisouly I supervised ;)

Nosferatu Jul 30, 2012 05:31 PM

It took me a few visits to really sink in, but now I'm a regular there.
Same goes for my 13 yo son.

Lost of interesting and useful subreddits for just about anything you can think of.
Yes, layout is not very Web 2.0, but it serves the purpose...

Go, check it out and give it some time - you'll probably end up loving it.

20 seconds is all you have got to grab my attention these days. :o

I like reddit for the most part. There are so many people there that new content is coming in all the time, usually as it is happening. There are shitty parts about it, but you have that with any website where user's make up the majority of the content.

Nice thing about it is, you can find a subreddit for just about any interest you might have. The r/askscience and r/gaming subreddits I find pretty damn interesting.

The worst thing about reddit is it is a time sink. :bleh:

Meteor Jul 30, 2012 10:13 PM

Reddit is pretty awesome in some sections I would say

marqmajere Jul 31, 2012 12:45 AM

It's a great site to kill time at if you are bored and looking for a laugh.

To kill time, I skip reddit and go directly to imgur

and then... next >> next >> next >> next ...

Wish me luck :bleh:

sittal Jul 31, 2012 11:54 AM

If you ignore the lie-filled and meme-filled default subreddits, there is a lot of useful and interesting info. /r/asmr is really fascinating.

Razeus Aug 1, 2012 08:50 AM

Well I was going to try the Digg.com that launched today, that has a much cleaner interface, BUT they require a Facebook login...WTF??? Facebook is taking over all login's these days?!?!

It looks like a news aggregate site anyway, which I get using Zite on my iDevices.

kepler Aug 1, 2012 08:53 AM

Fwiw, reddit isn't just aggregation. If anything, I think that's a pretty small part of it.

crainger Aug 1, 2012 10:54 PM

reddit is good for ragecomics and gonewild ::bleh::

Destroy Jan 20, 2022 08:26 AM

Meh, related.....

if a new member and if the subreddit doesn't list the karma requirements, how do you know if your original post will truly post?

huskylord Jan 20, 2022 09:04 AM

Rise.....rise from the dead........
