Windows Media Player won't play some AVI files

I sometimes download AVI files from kazaa and every now and then I'll get one that Windows Media Player won't play. It'll say "Cannot play back the file, The format is not supported"

Sounds like a codec problem, but the files always work with Realplayer. I have divx installed. So, I don't know.

I guess the obvious solution would be to just use Realplayer to watch these, but I prefer Windows Media Player, and its expecially annoying if you want to throw the file in a playlist with other stuff and you're forced to use Realplayer for everything.

I imagine this has happened to other people. Is there a particular codec that this tends to happen with, or maybe another one that I need to install?

Here's a suggestion, try opening the file in VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org) and see what kind of error is throws.

Don't use this crap

Don't use this crap

Don't use crapy and bloated apps like WMP for video or audio. Use WinAMP 2.8x for audio and Zoom Player or BSPlayer for video. Just get rid of the bloat.

I've found that some files only play in the divx player, even with a functional plugin installed.

WMP 8 thinks that some videos are .mp3s because it's gay, but you can open those with WMP 6.4. Or you could use the DivX player...

those files are exclusive to kazaa. ive heard they are part of something called "magic lantern" and you can read more at www.nsa.gov ...i donno tho. i just like porno.

WHAT?!?! pushing the NSA's website. I have a problem when this organization hosting a secure version of linux. I mean it may be hard for the average user to use, but they probably have a backdoor so they can access your computer without a problem. Have you tried the xvid codec, I know people are starting to use it more since its opensource...so no need to pay for it.

im sorry im j/k. i juat hate kazaa alot.
i still believe it, along with evil dalnet are full of feds and their files tho

renaming those files to xxx.avi.divx and opening them in the playa works fine, also installing WMP 9 (and of course the divx codecs) works fine without changing the file extension.

it did for me at least, the files didn't play with WMP 6.4 (my all time fav) and 9 works just fine with them...

DIVX files cannot be played if they are incomplete or missing some blocks - you'll have to strip the index and rebuild it using divfix.

i cant wait for 98lite for 2000/xp
hopefully it will allow complete removal of wmp as well as IE, kazaa, etc. ive done an ok job myself removing them but id like it to be official.
BTW did it mention kazaa sucks? using it is supporting the man. sharing files on it is even worse. it is run by some evil evil goverment who owns your soul and makes the baby jebus cry.

According to Microsoft Official Website, Windows Media Player does support playing AVI videos. If your Windows Media Player won't play AVI, two reasons cause the issue:
Reason one: Windows Media Player doesn't support the video codec in AVI file. AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) is a container format designed by Microsoft, used to wrap audio and video streams together. These audio and video streams can be compressed by various codec. During the days AVI format comes into being, WMP supports all video codecs that can be used in AVI file. After that, more and more new codecs, like Xvid, DivX, MPEG-4, are invented and used in AVI file, but WMP doesn't support them.
Reason Two: Your AVI files are corrupt. Play them on other players and devices to check if this is the reason.
To play AVI files with a non-Microsoft codec in Windows Media Player, you'd better use specialised software (google it) to convert AVI to Windows Media Player compatible WMV, ASF, AVI, MKV, MPG etc.
