Wanted to see what y'all thought about VPNs. I've used PIA in the past but haven't been super happy with the ping times and reliability. Though the bandwidth is plenty fast.

I have an Asus RT-AC87R router. Which I'd like to setup as the VPN client to a provider so that all of my local home traffic can talk to each other.

Thank you for the heads up. I'll probably give them a try since they have that 45 day free trial policy.

I use PIA, I just don't game over it. I usually use it for public access point connections. When was the last time you used it? I think it's grown quite a bit over the past year or so (more servers, better speeds).

I may check out ExpressVPN, though.

At one point a few months ago I tried setting my my router (the Asus RT-AC87R mentioned below) to serve as a VPN client to encrypt all the traffic leaving my house. This was over a 1Gbps Google Fiber connection. All my internal traffic was connected to the router, with all my traffic passed through the Fiber Network box out to the internet already encrypted before it hit the Network box. I found it difficult to get gaming sessions (i.e. Destiny on the Xbox) to work at all. Not just for the Open/Closed NAT type issues but just overall service reliability and connectivity and speed.

I'm willing to give another provider a try though.

I have tried PIA and ExpressVPN. Neither could give me one third of my ISP speeds. I have 300/20 from my ISP. Max PIA could do was 150/15 and Express was a lousy 50/12. This is testing all of their servers in the states. On my Pixel XL I tried PIA. Max speeds I could get on any of their servers was 30/8.

I have a feeling these VPN services are getting hammered due to what the government is doing with net neutrality. I'm not willing to sacrifice all of that bandwidth to use a VPN. I'm going to run without a VPN myself. I did switch to Brave browser to make my browsing a little more secure.

I only use it when I want to secure my connection and not gaming. I get my max 50/30 using PIA in UK, my BW is about the same so nothing lost for me. Watching Netflix or Amazon is never done through it so not sure why I would need 300 down unless you are 100% all the time with it on ?
