is 2013-2014 ford edge (FWD) a reliable choice?
i know that the way they designed the engine cooling system is batshit dumb (or genius depending on perspective.)
it looks like a labor intensive job if the water pump dies. that is if the engine survives at all.

another option is 2012-2013 honda CRV
but i feel like the ford would be a more comfy ride. And people keep asking ridiculous amount of money for the crv in decent condition.

I have a 2009 Ford Edge. Don’t know about 2012 model but I also have a 2016 one. Both work well. I don’t pay much at all for maintenance. All work done is normal wear and tear stuff like AC leaked after 11 years or radiator fan died after 5 years of service or brakes replaced in 10 years.

You have the v6?

yikes this doesn’t inspire confidence

especially since the family member looking for a car has a baby.
https://www.motorbiscuit.com/why-the-2013-ford-edge-is-the-worst-edge-you-can-buy/
The second- and third-worst issues for the 2013 Edge are that the engine stalls or shuts down while driving and that the brakes become unresponsive. The engine problems appeared around 44,100 miles on average and cost owners $440 to repair. The brake problems popped up at 67,100 miles on average and cost $830 to fix on average.

maybe that god awful looking crv is the more sensible way to go?

so, it has to a SUV-kind of car? What's your budget for it? Mileage?

Yes they prefer an suv
Budet around 14-15k
That's about the going rate I'm seeing of a 2013ish Ford Edge around here ( Philadelphia) with <100k mileage

I was primarily looking at Ford Edge for ride comfort. And looks ( compared to other cars of that Era)

Honda CRV
Toyota Rav4
Hyundai Tucson or Santa Fe
Kia Sorento
Ford Edge
Subaru Forester
Mazda CX5
older generation Toyota Venza

Just trying to throw a list of cars that are competition to the Ford Edge that i know of, maybe it helps expand the options.

Good list.

We recently test drove:

Tiguan
CX5
Rav4
Subaru Crosstrek
Outback
Forester

The Tiguan was pretty high on our list, but in the end the Forester won us over. The Rav4 was the worst of the bunch, it was absolutely awful.

also another vote for the CRV, they are ver popular over here. The awd of the forester is a nice bonus though. If you actually need it is another question

Yes I think both my cars are V6.

One is 265 HP limited.
The new one is top of the line Sport model with 315 HP.

I test drove many cars in its class (CUVs) and both times ended up with an Edge. For this money, I strongly suggest either an Edge or Explorer. Both are within 2K of each other used here.

I never had the problems you quoted around bakes, engine shutdown etc.
