That daily game progress thread...

Played two more FMV dating games. Five Hearts Under One Roof was alright, but a bit expensive and has some issues that hold it back, like the audio dubbing.

Knowledge or know Lady was pretty great, probably the 2nd best in the genre due to great acting but also frequent humor and the fun perfect endings.

Started Silent Hill 2, so far I can say it has lots of fog.

Finished Blake Stone: Planet Strike

More of the same from Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold. They made a few changes for the sequel, but it largely plays the same. This one adds 20 new maps plus 4 secret maps.

A few of the enemies were just reskins, but they did add a few more, but there's only so much you can do in an old game like this. Also a new gun, that was supposed to be the best, but I rarely used it. Instead of finding a key in each level, you had to find an explosive and drop it near some security cube to unlock the next level. They added some barriers that are triggered by either stepping on a particular (invisible) location, or by killing certain enemies. Enemies moved a lot faster, so they could kill you quickly. The game gives a ton of health, so surviving wasn't a problem, it was mostly about not getting surprised by an enemy that would take you out before you can react. Particularly ceiling turrets that are beside when you enter a room.

One major change was that you could blow up your ammo. There was a lot of ammo on the ground and your best two guns would cause explosions that destroy them. So not only would it cost you the chance to refill your ammo, it would also do a lot of damage to yourself and enemies. Really annoying.

They changed the map system. Instead of showing you a 2D map when you press TAB, the game always showed you a map. The problem is that it rotated as you turn your character. With a low resolution game the map was kind of hard to see as it rotated, which made it a lot less useful. But they did add a map battery item you could pick up. This let you zoom the map, which revealed where there were secret doors. An interesting solution to the 'headbutting' problem of the original game (and Wolfenstein 3D) for finding secrets.

Hard to say if this game was better or worse than Aliens of Gold. Pretty much the same, but I was kind of burnt out on these games after playing Aliens of Gold.

Time to take a break from old classic shooters for a while.

Currently playing Battlefield 5. A bit of Battlefield, a bit of Far Cry. It's much, much more awesome than I had expected!

I wanted to try out the dpad on this 8bitdo controller so I played some of that Contra anniversary collection, ended up finishing the NES version of Contra.

The dpad was alright, not perfect but good enough for games like Contra.

Finished another game in the contra collection, Super C.

I'm not going to bother with the arcade version of Contra 1 and 2 though, no idea if it is an emulation issue or not, but they run like crap compared to the NES versions.

Now I only have the hard contra games left, Contra 3 and Hard Corps, I don't think I'm going to tackle them right now, I don't feel like actually getting good at contra games right now.

Finished Contra Hard Corps, and got an ending.

It was a kind of neat game, but it's basically a bossrush, it does not what I consider regular contra levels, you basically move from set piece to set piece.

Not a bad game, but I kind of prefer the ones that are structured like the NES game.

Is that that the one where you have to pick from 4 different characters, including a robot and a wolf? In terms of git gud, I remember that one being on an entire different level of difficulty in the Contra Collection.

Got back into Battlefield 5's short story single player campaign again last night. I love it. If I'd been a younger, more patient gamer, I'm sure I'd have replayed these levels dozens of times.

...and done.

BF5's single player campaign didn't get the greatest reviews when it came out. It's not the quintessential Battlefield experience, the tone felt off to some reviewers, it was delivered in pieces, and there were complaints of spotty AI and annoying stealth. However, maybe it's the passing of time, the lack of expectation or just my personal preference in what I like from a shooter, but I felt none of these downsides.

Instead, I like the wonky AI: you can stealth around, but eventually you will mess something up, and switch up to the loud firefights of Battlefield. So you get part stealth, part noise, and the trick is to adapt to the moment. I don't mind sneaking around in a Far Cry-esque style. The tone seems right to me: BF5 isn't a classic WW2 story of "good guys overcoming bad guys", it's the global war seen through different lenses, told through untold stories. It's an angle that at least keeps you on your toes, and I enjoyed that.

Will mess around some more with the game, which is rare for me to do with a single player campaign. Then it's on to one of a dozen other games I've already got installed. :p

Just started Jedi Survivor. Looks cool, plays nicely, feels smooth. So far, so good.

My EA pass runs out in two weeks, so I'd best get a move on.

Yep, that's the one.

Finished Super Castlevania IV.

It's still pretty neat, it is still one of the coolest castlevanias out there.

I do wish that they would have included a way to play it without the slowdowns in this castlevania collection.

Finished Dragon Age Inquisition, figured it was time to lay my 10-year old playthrough to rest.

I still have to finish that trespasser dlc, and then I am ready for the new dragon age.

Finished LiS Double Exposure, unfortunately it wasn't good. Half finished. Disliked it as much as LiS 2

Half Billion: Love Choice was decent middle of the pack FMV game with high prod values. Not even sure how these games make money. Some have sold really well (LIAA) but most of these only seem to be selling 20-50k copies on steam. I assume they're actually doing really well on mobile platforms in China.

Playing Black Ops 6 now, mostly the mp since I finished the campaign. Having a good time online so far, maps are fine (dunno why people hate them), speed is frantic. Spawn logic needs a bit of work, again. Need to play more Zombies too.

Rushed through the Trespasser DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Now I am truly ready for that new Dragon Age action rpg.

I never played inquisition though I loved the original. Pretty sure I got it as a freebie on one thing or another though. At the time people were down on it. Years later, still feel that way?

TBH, I don't really know how I feel about DA: I, I can't say that it's a bad game since I spent 90 hours playing it in 2014, but I also did abandon my playthrough the same year only to pick it up again in 2024 as the sequel was coming out.

But going by the 10-something hours I spent playing it this year, I'd put it on the same level as something like greedfall, only with way higher production values.

Origins is a way better game, as that bioware knew what kind of game they wanted to make, inquisition suffers from Bioware not knowing if they wanted to make a true action rpg or not, which made the combat not very engaging at all IMO.

I guess Veilguard is the game they wanted Inquisition to be, aka fantasy mass effect.
