Star Wars - Rogue One

Overall better writing and more things made sense than in Force Awakens. This will be a buy the best edition on release day.

Dog fight scenes were awesome, reminded me of Freespace 2.

This one focused more on the people involved rather than watching things get blown up as was in TFA, I prefer this method.

The situations presented had legitimate reasons for happening. There was no insta-know force powers, the characters all had enough said and done on screen to make their abilities believable.

Went in with low expectations and those were surpassed.

Slightly disappointed by how little K2 had to say, most of those who I've read/talked to were amazeballs about this. He said far too little to warrant the interest in this character. HK-47 was far meaner, less pleasant, and had better one liners.

Well worth seeing in the theatre.

Agreed!

I enjoyed the attention to detail that was lacking in the last 4 star wars movies.

I actually got to see EXPANDED UNIVERSE things!

Like new battle tactics! I haven't been that excited about STAR WARS since I was a kid.

The close-up shots of the turbolasers firing at X-wings were very nice (thanks to the attention to detail, "realism")

What caught my attention most was hearing in an interview or trailer that WW2 and Vietnam style ground combat would be used. While I'm no expert on these things I can say the way the Rogues moved through the jungle was pretty interesting to watch and can say that I learned that.

The EU nods were groovy as well, the Rebels references (aside the VX-100 I missed) were great.

Disney just needs to incorporate Revan and all will be well.

Something that jumped out at me in my last viewing...

Just before the big battle on Scarif, when they were first going through the shield gate, there was a storm trooper just walking around on the shield gate, in the frigging vacuum of space.

Standard stormtrooper armor is supposed to be sealed and allow the wearer to spend limited amounts of time in the vacuum of space. There are attachments as well that can allow for longer space time. So says this wikia.

I liked it. The speeches were bad, humour not funny, characters weird and undeveloped, the score mediocre and all almost-star-wars-then-suddenly-nope annoying, the main hero completly uninteresting. Don't know who hired the snoop dog pilot, was awful and I'd prefer even a ball sack face alien as a main instead. The whole main cast was a bunch of bums anyway, I understand a bit of ragtag or whatever the word but why are rebels looking like a low class rehab center fugitives. Also it confirmed for me that you have to go lighthearted with Star Wars or it doesn't work, at least until you update all the cheesy designs like ceramic pants storm troopers or those silly buttons and cheap rubber on Vader. They clearly tried but dust and dirt on storm trooper armor is never going to be enough tbh.

BUT, it made princess Kylo, timeloops, who-shits-him/herself-first force duels and all the cringe and facepalm of Farce Awakens go away, not to mention was more original which makes the latter quite pathetic in that context really. Also R1 actualy almost makes gritty SW work, has fast action, good ending, even better second ending in the corridor, lot of rebel hit and run/ sabotage, great shots of space, lots of star destroyers, creepy Tarkin, even creepier Leia and all the bums die in the end . I also appreciate the spy/ war movie aspect of it and how Vader's entry gains more weight and impact after 2 hours of showing standard fighting, grunts against grunts.

In short, far from perfect but still blows Farts Awakens out of the water.

I liked it too, especially the space battle scenes. They can do a lot more of that now and more with it (obviously).

I loved K2-SO.

Non-spoiler: Would Star Wars be Star Wars without storm-troopers running head-long into laser fire with no attempt at either finding cover or cover firing-- especially right after emerging from some huge door or going down some hallway?

When they rammed the Empire battle cruiser into the next one and the whole heap domino-ed into the space-gate, that was pure space opera gold.

just got in from seeing it, and IT. IS. GOOD. better than I expected, considering it's from touchiefeelie family crap disney:mad:. really liked the dialog yoda eggs, and that it's a direct lead in to A New Hope:cool:

The more I think about what I saw the less enthusiastic about it. K2SO aside, the other characters are extremely boring. I certainly got that "hey we hired Chinese actors in exchange for Mainland Chinese ticket sales" feeling more than anything else. Heck, it's pretty evident the director had no clue how to make use of the Asian actors. Both of them exhibited stiff acting throughout the movie despite the fact they're great actors. And guess what, this is coming from a Donnie Yen fan. Jyn Erso... what can I say? Instead of fleshing out her character they decided to make her the one-dimensional heroine. Lost potential there too because I would've easily seen her more fleshed out as the next Mara Jade if she didn't turn to... stardust. The other "human" characters were so uninteresting I already forgot why they're... there. Of course as I mentioned on my previous post @ this thread the CG characters was nothing but a disaster and completely unbelievable. I don't know... but there's something about the stormtrooper scenes that makes me feel like an amateur film made by fans.

There are things I loved though. Mostly the jaw-dropping brilliant costume design. Think I mentioned it but the action scenes was excellent as well.

I've got to say... certainly not the best Star Wars movie. If such quality and misdirection becomes a trend with the anthology series (which seems to be the case so far seeing how they'd introduce a mentor figure for Han Solo) I don't know... I might as well just watch the new trilogy.

I finally saw this today. A few friends that saw it before me said it was great and overhyped it, and i still enjoyed it better than i was expecting.

I knew it was going to be good, but was skeptical of the main characters being a bit bland with little chemistry. But despite some popular criticisms about them, to me they were just fine. All except the droid which was obviously just there for comic relief. I thought he was the weakest link. All the other main characters of the rogue one group I thought were all interesting in their own right. I never felt bored and waiting for the next scene with any of them.

I wasn't a big fan of the cgi characters. Yeah it was impressive and probably the best cgi ever, but that uncanny valley is still there. Jarring and takes me out of the immersion so not quite good enough yet. I understand why they did it though and thought it was necessary to have it in there.

Still need time for it to all sink in but I think I'm at least ready to say it's a better movie than Force Awakens. Maybe because it's so closely tied to the story of the original trilogy which helps make it that much more interesting for me, and they really did get it all right and did a fantastic job. Can't wait for the blu-ray release

The best way to experience this movie is on imax3d and hopefully quiet non-chatty adults...

The movie is definitely fun as a non-Jedi avatar character movie...actually felt a lot like reading a limited series or one shot comics or graphic novels.

This movie was definitely PG-13 but there kinda was something that was missing...maybe I have to watch it again but unlike the OT or the PT...there was a lack of dialogue that felt like what people who lived in a distant Galaxy long long ago would've spoken like...

They did a pretty good job with the CGi character...very close voice...as for the last CGi character...it was a bit weird but maybe it was deliberately done...I mean Final Fantasy Spirits Within came out what? Over twelve years ago? Most of the CGi characters there were extremely accurately done but were fictional...

Maybe the character could have kept the robe on...

I suspect that the Blu Ray will have an extended time version...it seriously seems like once again they made a ten hour movie and cut tons and tons of footage specially from the space battles.

I stayed away from idiot SPOILERS ruining the movie on social media...like these dweebs can't wait to post screenshots all over the place...

Hopefully the movie will still have an extended imax3d showings because there's no way in hell I would downgrade to regular 3d or 2d...and if you do you are a WEAKLING.

I know I might be in the minority on this and that's fine, but I'm just totally done with 3D. I'd be perfectly fine never seeing a movie in 3D ever again. I just feel it does not add anything beneficial to the experience, and on top of that the glasses are always uncomfortable on my head, make the movies look blurry, and cause me eye strain. It's always a few bucks more expensive too.

I do love regular IMAX though.

Very few movies really take advantage of 3D properly. In my opinion, one of the very few that did it well was Dr. Strange, the others it was there but didn't add a whole lot. The glasses (especially for those of us who require corrective glasses to see) and loss of focus really do impair the experience.

Even in the movies that take advantage of 3D "properly," I still would rather just go without it because at that point I feel its a gimmick.

When you are shooting your movie with 3D in mind, even if done well, you are consciously adding a gimmick into your film. Its just not really essential to the experience, and because of the discomfort I have with the glasses I just wish they'd give up on it. Add insult to injury, is the fact for certain movie showings my local theater doesn't give me the choice to view the movie without 3D.

I totally agree. It's a technical gimmick that does very little for the viewer's emotions.

For me, watching in 3d takes an added level of effort, and so I only want it when it really has a pay-off. Avatar was amazing, and 3d added value in nearly every scene. Or like when Ironman dawns his hulkbuster suit and battles the Hulk... that was AWESOME in 3d. But as soon as the action scene ends, and it's just people talking to each other, I'd rather switch to 2d.

Saw it, liked it. Didn't give a lick about any of the new characters but was good space war movie.

When Grand Moff Tarkin showed up, I thought to myself "Wow, they found a damn good look alike". I didn't even realized he was CGI till I read about it. Leia not so much. She looked not right and rather fake the instant my swollen eyes saw her.

Hated the black Imperial robot, gayest robot ever.

Great effects; the slow churning uprooting and title wave of gigantic rock and surface soil. The delight, even if short lived, act of the Star Destroyers colliding and ultimately dropping the planet shields.

Tease of Vader in his fluid tank. Shoulder bump into pig nose man. Excellent lead in to A New Hope.

Another dislikes, no back story on how she got imprisoned.
Woman lead was so lack luster. I kept waiting for her to do something cool like use some small bit of the Force but nope.

Thinking about picking up the Best Buy exclusive steel book edition today. Not sure yet if I want to hold out for a director's cut though.

Bah. I'm not buying any of the new Star Wars or Marvel stuff (post Disney buyout) until they start releasing in 4k. None of that upscaled garbage either. If you make $1 billion + with every film you release you can damn well afford to keep it 4k throughout the production process.
