Splinter Cell Remake...

They've been hiding anything real about this. I don't think there has been any actual footage of the game, has there?

Nope. These are some of the first drips of actual information. Glad to hear something is actually happening, because it's been a long time since we got a Splinter Cell game.

So the current generation of gaming is now the generation of remakes? Seems to be the case across the board.

I'll wait for official news, instead of getting hyped on rumor. I loved Splinter Cell, but have since then never had a moment where I really vibed with another SC game again.

If I wanted to play one now, is there a Splinter Cell game that is still good, and holds up? The first generation SC games are pretty rough to play today, without nostalgia goggles...

I've actually been wanting a Splinter Cell remake or new game. It would be a perfect game to play on all these new OLED screens. It would be amazing.

I think the majority of the early games, don't play nice on modern hardware. Mostly due to them being pre-widescreen and having different levels of breakage when you try to go widecsreen :(

Because of that, they could really do with a remaster at this point. So I hope if the new game does well, that happens :)

I haven't really touched any of these games in a long time, other than to reinstall on Linux to see if they work. As @twonha said, as much as I enjoyed the SC games when I played them, I never really had the urge to replay them.

I think Pandora Tomorrow is the only one that does not work on modern hardware and you can't find any digital download version because of that.

The original Splinter Cell and Pandora Tomorrow work well enough with some tweaks (widescreen fixes, higher resolution textures for the first game). Thanks to dgVoodoo2 you can even enable the shadow buffer effects that originally only worked on GeForce 3/4 (and maybe FX?) cards. If you have an Xbox One/X/S they're probably better played on there via backward compatibility, though.

As for the remake...I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic. The quality of the games in the series has been very inconsistent over the years. The original is great but noticeably antiquated at this point, Pandora Tomorrow did some neat things in a few levels but was largely a mess and downright broken in some ways, Chaos Theory is great but also hasn't aged that well, Double Agent had some neat ideas that were implemented half baked and had the added weirdness of the differences between the previous gen and next gen versions, conviction is hot garbage and Blacklist was a pretty good soft reboot and a much better attempt at modernizing the gameplay than Conviction was.

That being said, I think Splinter Cell is a good candidate for a remake. I wasn't a huge fan of what they did with Sam as a character after Chaos Theory and I didn't like the way they started simplifying some gameplay elements and the way the games became a little less stealth and a little more action (with conviction being the worst offender). Supposedly, one of the goals of this remake is to keep the tone and more grounded nature of the original while leveraging modern hardware and gameplay concepts...so we'll see how well that works out.

Part of me hopes that they're targeting next-gen hardware, though, because it could be a great showcase for a range of ray traced effects that would probably be difficult if not impossible to fully implement on current gen consoles.

Well they are using the Snowdrop engine, same one used in Avatar. Which leverages some pretty great RT. And with the rumour that they will be pushing the RT to the point of it affecting game-play... trying to stay cautiously optimistic as well

I can understand replacing the voice actor if he/she no longer can do "the voice", just look at modern simpsons, it sounds like someone is doing a bad impression of them, even though they are still voiced by the original actors.
