RIP, Classic Shell

Bummer.

Start10 is a good, but not free, alternative. I think it's like $5. Much better than the standard Windows Start menu.

I actually like the new start menu, but it's too bad CS is gone. Really liked it.

I like it too but it doesn't always work for me. For whatever reason the start menu stops popping up, I have to restart the shell experience host process.

Nope, sorry. It sucks.

;) :p
It's an acquired taste :p

Like most folks (maybe) my most commonly used progs are pinned to the taskbar with other stuff pinned as tiles. I'm finding that I'm fond of using the new search (against my better judgement lol) if I don't feel like scrolling...

Maybe it's how it fits on my 2 in 1 notebook...dunno. I do know that options are always nice and Classic Shell was one of the best options available.

I've been really fortunate regarding bugs - nothing major to report for a while now.

It looks like it's going open source, so maybe other coders will keep it updated. At least we can hope.

Heh, try to preserve everyone's tile layout on 1000 non-persistent desktop VMs with 100% consistency and you'll stop liking it.

I always liked Quick Launch bar, since XP days.

It's still there in Win10 (just harder to find), and it works just fine.

Used multiple quick launch bars with XP, as they gave me space for icons at the sides of the screen without having to clutter up my desktop. Haven't seen any need to bother with them since Win7 came along because I can just pin programs to the taskbar and get the same result.

Still doesn't make up for Win10's abomination of a start menu, or any of that tile nonsense, though. :nope:

Yeah that would kill it for me for sure :p

its really sad because I had start menu and taskbar layouts moving perfectly with W7 on non-persistent VMs. It was just a few files in a folder! W10 destroyed all that with a special service, database and cryptic reg keys that all have to be saved together. And if they're not loaded back with the right timing during logon, you get all sorts of weird behavior...
