Anyways, with the weather nicely turning sunny, I've started to work on my lawn. Last year when we moved into our place, the lawn was a nightmare. Previous owner just dumped a bunch of sod ontop of the EXISTING sod that didnt really grow (we think it was just to cover the dog crap, garbage, and ugly patchy yellow sod for the purpose of selling). We didnt notice this when we first looked through the house as at the time when we did tours and stuff it was winter and the backyard was covered in snow).We decided to just dig and toss all that crap and regrow the entire lawn from seed. We did half first to see how it would turn out and then the other half afterwards.

It turned out pretty good, half of the grass grew pretty good and thick enough, but we started the other half late so it sprouted in patches before the snow hit. The weather has finally turned good and its regrowing nicely, and ive just reseeded the bald spots to get the rest going again.

Ive borrowed a lawn trimmer from my parents to cut the grass when the first half did grow (I live in a rowhouse, interior unit. Grass in front isnt really separated so our portion we're responsible for isnt very large. backyard is enclosed, its about 27x27 ft sq (a bit bigger than a standard sized garage) with a 10ftx10ft concrete patio. We've determined that a lawnmower isnt neccessary for the area of grass we need to cut and a trimmer works fine.

I would like to return their trimmer and get one of my own but ive seen so many brands and unsure which ones are good. I dont think we need to overpay for a high end brand (Makita, Dewalt), but i dont want an el cheapo brand that sucks (had enough experience dealing with various brands that knowing el cheapo brands are hit and mostly miss and would rather have a decent brand that lasts much longer). Oh i'd prefer a cordless electric system, and would hopefully have good battery life.

What brands do you guys use?
Ive seen:

Ryobi = Seems OK...apparently battery life kinda sucks though.
Black & Decker = ehhhh......not a fan
Makita & Dewalt = Quality...but not cheap
Yardworx = Cheapo....not sure?

Having those interchangeable batteries for multiple tools would be handy as i think theres other tools i'd like to get.
 
I use Ryobi (drills and tree trimmer currently) dewalt and Rigid table/chop saws and have some Makita equipment that just died after about ~10 years/heavy use.

I've been fortunate with the equipment I've gotten, but I would rather spend a bit more for longevity if able. I do admit that sometimes a sale price catches my eye and I'll go with that.

Except for Black and Decker. Nope. I've had a couple of pieces over the years and garbage...just garbage. Not worth the argument with their warranty dept.

is yardworx the crappy tire brand? There not bad, had my trimmer and mower for a few years now with no issues
 
I use whatever, as long as it's corded. I used battery tools a decade ago but didn't like babysitting them all the time. I've heard that battery tools are alot better now, but I still stick with wired.

I actually did think about reel mowers since they are indeed size appropriate for our lawn, but we have some paving stones that we also had to put in (the yard is enclosed by the garage and the house on 2 ends, and a small fence on the other 2 ends) to give us a pathway from the back door to the garage. When the home was built back in i think 2015 there was no real 'path' so you just walk across the grass to access the garage. Didnt want to destroy the grass with foot traffic that way (plus its nicer to have the paving stones). The garage isnt aligned with the door to the home so the pavers arent laid out in a straight line theres a bit of a jog at one point. So as 'square' as the yard is, we do have some edges that those mowers wouldnt be able to get to. I'd rather have 1 tool to handle everything rather than 2 tools.

For not much more you could get a corded electrical mower. I know it sounds stupid, but I've been using one for several years and I love it. It's incredibly easy to run & maintain... only problem is that you're managing a cord, which makes it feel like you're vacuuming your lawn.

Depending on grass types, those things suck. Also if there is the slightest twig you'll stop dead when you push. I had one that is use for my sidewalks and side of my house and it would always leave bits uncut because the grass was tougher.

Just like lawn mowers, there are good ones and there are cheap ones. Good ones work extremely well.
 
Actually I've seen people use weedwackers to mow small yards, and it can work well.
 
Corded ftw, you just cut in a pattern so the cord never gets in the way. Plus with a corded mower, you never have to worry about the battery being charged, wearing out or not being able to get replacement however many years later. And the only maintenance is cleaning and occasionally getting the blade sharpened.
 
WTF is this trend of not putting side exhaust on push mowers these days? Gawwwwww.

I bought a 2017 Craftsman a few weeks ago which is the first I'd heard of it. They gave me a lil flap to put on there but it comes off at least once a session.

not since it picked up a small pebble and broke a 700 buck sliding glass patio door

yah, no kidding. I live by a huge lake and it's ALWAYS raining or wet here so my lawn gets very long fast and is almost uncuttable at times without a big exhaust for the grass...mulching is NOT an option.

I got so tired of the flimsy exhaust on my Poulan Pro lawnmower that I drilled some holes and permanently attached the thing.

As for Weed Trimmers I really like my dual string Milwaukee M18 one but I already had a bunch of tools and batteries and the deal I got on my string trimmer included 2 of the 9AH batteries which are awesome
