New gaming PC build

I just ordered the parts for a new gaming PC build. The last one I built for myself was in 2012 which I sold in December 2023. I had it for 12 years and kept upgrading the GPU to keep up with times but kept the same/original CPU (an Intel Core i7-3930K). I also got my first Mac around the time I sold my old PC. I've been exclusively using my Mac (a MacBook Pro 14" with the M3 Pro chip) for 2 years now as my only computer. I don't own any gaming console and wanted to get something that would allow me to play games "without any restrictions." Thus I landed on getting a new gaming PC.

This new gaming PC will be exclusively located in the living room hooked up to the TV and sound system. I will use my MacBook Pro 14" for daily/everyday usage and use the PC only for gaming.

Note that I got an RX 9070 XT instead of an RTX 5080 because my TV, which is a Sony X95K, has issues with NVIDIA GPUs. Currently, Sony TVs have an HDMI issue with NVIDIA GPUs where black outs and other "mishaps" occur randomly. AMD GPUs don't have this problem so that's why I opted for an AMD GPU.

That looks sweeet, can't wait to see the build pics. Your timing isn't bad either, things are about to go a little insane.

Why a 240mm water cooler instead of a OP aircooler?
 
Nice hope you didnt get nailed on the ram too badly. Honestly you could have gotten cl 30 and be fine with it... the extra cache on the 9800x3d covers a lot of bases.

Thanks. The build was completed yesterday as I received the final part: the SSD. Also installed Windows 11 Pro.

I originally ordered the Corsair 280 mm water cooler but it didn't fit with my case + motherboard combo. The motherboard's I/O area got in the way of the radiator's fans. Returned it and got the 240 mm version and it fit without issues.

Why a 240 mm water cooler instead of a big air cooler? I like the look of water coolers over having a big hulking block in the middle of the motherboard. Plus, my case is on the smaller side so I am not sure if a large air cooler would fit.

I'll post pics soon.

I bought the RAM for $500. Few days after I ordered it, it went up to $800-$1,000.

OOOOoo just in before ram goes bonkers, nicely done. Can expect those ram prices to just keep going as well.

Micron just announced shuttering consumer memory so they can focus on enterprise/data centers. Now would probably be a great time for Intel to start repurposing their old fabs for memory.

Wouldn't be a terrible idea. With only 3 companies producing the worlds supply of memory (Samsung, Micron and SK-Hynix), there is definitely a demand. But I wouldn't expect to see anyone likely to spin up to make memory till after the AI bubble inevitably pop's. So we get to slog through what is likely to be a couple years of insane pricing for anything using memory. (As all 3 have said they will not increase production, they will just shuffle current production away from consumer level stuff and towards AI enterprise stuff)
 
Read one story that Hynix could up RAM production 800% next year. Seemed like a lot but cant find the link for that right now. China might step in I wonder so not sure they would let their market melt away like that just for AI.
 
Just thought I would update this thread.

This PC is only used for gaming and thus only turned on the weekend or when I have time to game. Everything was working fine when I shut down the PC in April. I remained off for one month. In May, I turned it back on and it booted into Windows. Shortly after, it just suddenly powered off. I turned it back on and looked inside the case. The CPU cooler's lights were not on and the radiator's fans were not spinning. I turned off the PC and reseated the cooler's power cable and other connections. Made no difference. I ordered Corsair iCUE LINK TITAN 240 RX RGB from Amazon and installed it. Worked fine without issues. Seems the old cooler suddenly stopped working after 5-6 months even with relatively little use.

I got an RMA approved with Corsair and had to ship it to another country for an RMA exchange. However, just to try my luck, I contacted Amazon and asked them if I could return it even though I had it for 5-6 months because it has stopped working. They asked if I contacted the manufacturer and I said yes but the process will take a lot more time as I will have to ship it to another country for an RMA exchange. They accepted to do a return so I just returned it.

All is good now.
