How Does the GTX 1080 Ti Stack Up in 2019?

B.C. remembers...

2007

8800 ultra 830+

8800 600+

Also remember that Nvidia released the 8800GT not longer after this, which they offered nearly almost the performance of the 8800 GTX for $250. They didn't have to do that. It's a rare display where a GPU leader that dominates from top to bottom that they release a bang for buck card like this when there is no incentive or competition to do so.

Unfortunately, I don't think Nvidia will be that generous again.

Nvidia had to launch those aggressive value 8800 derivatives based on Amd's small die, sweet spot strategy with the 3xxx, 4xxx and 5xxx series. Amd actually did overtake Nvidia in overall gpu discrete share for a fiscal quarter.

I don't know I had 2900 xt crossfire
put a hopper on the back and they would pop popcorn

and the 8800GT was not much better than a single 2900 xt at 2560x1600

………

and the ati radeon hd 3870 release date was two months after the 8800 gt and I bought two

3870 CF was much better

I recall voodoo5 reviews stating that $300 was too much for a video card regardless of performance and some were going as far as to say it would never be acceptable.

The 300 dollar price point for flag ship sku's were basically normalized with the original Voodoo, Voodoo 2-12 meg, and Tnt 2 Ultra. The sku's that would of redefined pricing for its time was the Voodoo 6000 if released, and eventually the GeForce 2 Ultra, I think 599 msrp's.

I seem to remember my ati mach 8 was close to 500

Well the $199 - $249 8800GT was quite a bit faster than the $400 2900XT, hence all the overwhelmingly positive reviews.

As for 3870, it was priced similarly to an 8800GT but was still slower:

Hence why most tech sites remember the 8800GT as one of the best bang for buck cards in graphics card history.

I don't remember the Mach 8 as a 3d graphics card; was it a 2d accelerated sku?

Edit: I looked it up. Wow! Expensive for a 1991 2d accelerated sku. I remember purchasing the Matrox Millennium 1 and 2 for 2d acceleration back in the early years.

Perfectly happy playing Gears 5 at 4k/60fps Insane slightly scaled and I'm sure I couldn't tell the difference either way while I wait for a 3080 Ti.

I don't care how shiit it was, I loved my 2900xt CrossFire rig. Would love to build a retro rig with them again. With Vista and only time period games installed. Ahhh, I'm such a nerd.

I'm really enjoying it, it's just a rip off. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't win a few G's at casino.

Honestly an OC'd 1080ti hangs with 2080S, only 1 tier down from 2080ti. Up to you if you want to buy one this late in the generation. You know 3080ti is gonna cost the same if not more - do you really want to upgrade twice at that price in a short period?
