Fortunately, since Mulally doesn't have quite the same ring, we can be pretty sure that the cars won't get new nameplates.

Ford Stepping Down as Automaker’s Chief Executive

DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 5 — With the Ford Motor Company struggling to end a financial crisis, William Clay Ford Jr. announced today that he is giving up the chief executive’s title, which he has held since October 2001. He will remain as Ford’s chairman, a position he has had since 1998.

Ouch, things seem pretty bleek with Ford right now... early mentions that 30k jobs will be lost, now this. Hmm... who knows, this maybe their darkest hr which things may turn around for the better in the long run.

I have no sympathy for Ford, the company or the CEO. Ford refuses to produce autos that people want and need. They are still hell bent on producing outdated gas swilling behemoths that represent an ever shrinking market segment. They are LAZY. It is easier to produce high profit SUV's based on a platform that has been around for decades.

The hard way is to start from scratch, plan for the long term (10+ years) and produce quality cars that people need, that people WANT. Companies like Toyota plan very long term, and are willing to do what it takes to gain market acceptance. Ford just recycles their truck platform and hopes to hell it will save their ass. Ford has a FEW cars that are good (the 500 for one) but for the most part their line-up is pathetic.

I do really feel for the workers though, they deserve better.

Probably the right move. Didn't seem like Ford was going anywhere lately, except perhaps to the proverbial trash can.
