It's 2 versions old now, and those 2 have made a difference, but you can get a free DAW if you make music. Tracktion 4 is now FREE (email registration required).

I think Tracktion is a steal at $60 + $30 for each upgrade for the latest version. I really like how it isn't modal; I like how it just flows without a bunch of pop-ups and overlays and different views. Makes it easier to focus on being creative rather than focusing on the software.
