Here is the REAL info, word for word.

"Although ATI’s drivers don’t let you turn off HyperZ by default, we were able to uncover the registry keys to disable all three aspects of the technology using a third party application to demonstrate the performance benefits gained. For those curious enough to play with these settings, they are:

So you see, this "Radelon" guy is just trying to get you to buy his friends tweaking software.

What he suggests will actually turn Hyper-Z OFF not ON.

It is ON to begin with, it has ALWAYS been ON, and it ALWAYS WILL BE ON. Unless for some stupid reason you decide to turn it off.

To suggest that it was OFF be default (which is what he did) is the craziest thing that I have ever heard.

QUESTION- Whay would ATI have one of the main features that makes the card so powerful tuned off my default?

ANSWER- They wouldn't, and they don't.

I just got off the phone with a technical support guy at ATI/Canada and he laughed when I even suggested such nonsense.

I am not trying to bash the guy named "Radelon", but he is giving FALSE information to all the good people here who have RADEON's.

Dude I dont have a registry ....\driver\0001\.... its just 0000 but I guess that just driver difference. But I also don't have

"FastZClearEnabled"
or
"DisabledHyperZ"

Are my drivers screwed up, ?
 
Err, not to stir the pot...

But. I really wouldn't be altogether surprised if ATI had shipped the Radeon with some/all of hyperz off. After recently replacing a Savage2000 and riding that train, I can tell you, that product windows are generally considered make/break for big companies, and the often WILL put a product out the door that has:
a) A broken feature (hardware).
b) A broker feature (software).
c) A feature that works, but does not perform as expected, and actually may slow down the overall performance of a video card.

Also, to stand so strong on what any company tech. support dude/dudette says re: functionality/features is possibly a bit nieve.

Don't mean to pounce, and I'm not paranoid. Just trying to bring some balance/perspective.

Pathfinder, no you are just fine bro. I am waiting on a call back from ATI about that, because I don't see the exact same thing in mine either.

But the main thing is that Hyper-Z is ON and that's all there is to it.

I will post any additional info I get from ATI, but since it's 4:30 it might be tomorrow before they call back I guess.
 
oh really.......you want to explain why the string says "DisableHyperZ" and you have it set to "1"......so basically it's telling you that I am right. It's asking you, do you want to "DisableHyperZ" and it's default answer is "1", which means.....yes I want to Disable it.

NO NO Mister Rodgers. The stuff I posted at the top was from Sharky's amd their review on the Radeon 64MB about a month ago.

The guy at ATI just confirmed it, that's all.

So you see, what you said doesn't make sense.

Furthermore, 1 is ALWAYS ON, and 0 is ALWAYS OFF.

You have been telling people to turn it to "0".

That's turning it OFF. PERIOD!!
 
double negative = positive, meaning:

“DisableHyperZ” = 0 = Enable HyperZ
“DisableHyperZ” = 1 = Disable HyperZ

1 = Yes/ON/True
0 = No/OFF/False

First of all, the guy claimed that Hyper-Z was disabled by default.

It's not. PERIOD! That's the whole point.

However YOU want to interpret it, the facts don't change.

If they are all defaulted to 1 then that means its on. meaning FastZclear is enabled, HyperZ is disabled, Hierarchical Z is disabled.

......Maybe ATI made a mistake and intended each string to be enabled, but 2 of them ended up being disable strings.
 
I Give up. The whole point is that Hyper-Z is ON, and both Sharky and ATI tech support confirm this.

However you want to interpret the numbers, or if they don't make sense to some people is not the point.

All i am saying is Hyper-Z is ON, and was never meant to be turned off. Go to the link at Sharky's and read the thing.

Geez, I was just trying to tell people not to worry because it's ON and not to mess with their settings. I never imagined such a response.

I give up. Believe whatever you want to. I'm thru. All i know is MY card, my brother's card and my best friends cards are working perfectly, and everything Sharky and ATI says makes sense to us.
 
JUST FOR THE RECORD: RADELON IS A GOOD GUY, AND I DID NOT MEAN TO FLAME HIM IN ANY WAY.

I AM JUST REPORTING WHAT I HAVE FOUND, READ, AND CONFIRMED AT SHARKY'S AND ATI.

THE ACTUAL NUMBERS ARE A BIT STRANGE, I ADMIT. BUT EVERYONE DOES SEEM TO CONFIRM THAT HYPER-Z IS ON.

AGAIN, NO FLAME MEANT TO RADELON.

Why don't all of you just benchmark it and check it for yourselves. Have not tried it myself but I will try it tonight. If there is a difference I will use what ever settings work the best. ON OR OFF!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Those strings are confusing, and make it LOOK like what they imply. Its most likely not the case, as HyperZ is enabled (and what i heard cannot be disabled).

Its probably best not to screw around with those, since if your performance is already great, then a gain/loss of maybe around 5fps is not gonna make a difference.
 
Geez, it's a mad house in here.

HyperZ is made up of 3 things;
HierarchicalZ, FastZClear, ZCompression.

HyperZ(ZCompression) and FastZClear are ENABLED BY DEFAULT in the drivers. HierarchicalZ is disabled because it only seems to support DX8+ games and causes artifacts in present games.

However, you can enable it if you like.

Okay gents, about the driver directory. Yours could be \driver\0000\ or \driver\0001 or \driver\0002 and so on. It depends on how many drivers you've ever had instlled for that card.

As far as enabling or disabling, JanKees (and others) are correct. 0=False, 1=True, so read the string carefully to understand what you are turning on or off.

Well I added changed the string on the DisableHierarchicalZ and it made NO Difference in fps or 3dMarks. I agree that the other HyperZ and ZFastClear are ON by default. All that I can suggest is that perhaps Radelon experiences are due to having a ATI 32M DDR. I have a retail ATI 64M DDR and changing this in the reg has little effect. Sorry to diappoint, but afraid that THERE IS NO MYSTICAL REG CHANGE that increase performance for free. I don't want to start another flame session, but after hearing about the reg fixes I have seriously looked into them and they came up wanting. I know that many on this board aren't experienced with reg editing so I just wanted to save you the hassle since it makes no positive effect. (You can however diasble the HyperZ and reduce performance). Until DirectX8.0 is rel'd the default for DiableHierarchicalZ is "1" (DISABLED). Lacking the other two string is also default and adding them makes no effect. Hope it helps and Radelon will you please stop replying to every message that it worked for you. While I don't doubt it, most everyone else that knows how to properly edit the REG has confirmed that is makes little to no positive effect.
 
I too did changed the # around and did a bunch of speed marks and got not change at all. 64 Radeon..
