Cryptolocker type virus - format remove it?

I have my grandma's laptop, which got hit by a cryptolocker style virus (haven't booted it to see which one, plan to totally isolate this machine both wired and wirelessly before doing so.)

My current plan is to just run a low level format on the disk. Will that totally kill this virus?
 
I think it would be fine, since the file system would be blindly overwritten. If I were you, I would manually kill all existing partitions as well (and rewrite MBR if not using GPT). Never hurts to be a little extra paranoid in these situations.
