Amypoint trying to RMA a 7950?

Hi guys, My 7950 just freezes at windows for some reason. I can't figure it out. I popped my old 7850 in and it works fine. I was thinking of taking the fan off and reapplying the heatsink with some thermal paste to see if that works. Does anyone know what the warranty is like for the AMD cards? Should I bother with an RMA? I have had radeons since the mid 2000's and never had an issue or RMA'd anyting so I don't know the process.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll likely have a 3 year warranty. But some cards carry a "lifetime" warranty. You can try and get an RMA if it has the latter, or if you fall within the 3 year window most cards have.

Did AMD make a card as well? It is possible it's actually an AMD card.

That is the card.

I honestly don't think you can, pretty much just bit the bullet and get a new card. Happened to me last year with my 6970, sorry but I don't think you can RMA it.

i took it apart and reapplied thermal paste to the gpu core...hopefully that helps.

Is it overheating? That's what killed my 6970, it would never kick the fan on, so I had to manually do it (multiple drivers too). Sometimes I forgot and that eventually killed the card.

fan works fine. i took the card out and reset the CMOS in case it was something funky there and i was actually able to get into windows and use the computer for about half hour before artifacts started to show up and it froze. I rebooted it and just got a pink and green screen.

I have taken the card apart and cleaned the gpu and added thermal paste. When i get home from work I will check to see if it works.

gpu-z says the core is running at 0.934V, does that seem low or is it me? i think i am going to install trixx and mess with the voltages and fan speed settings to see if it helps. I don't know if it was running hot or not.

Hey train,

I had a 6970 that worked great for 2-3 years and did almost the same thing yours is doing. It was just completely random. I could boot into windows and do anything using 2d/windows but it would hard crash booting ANY 3d game/program. I know it's not 'exactly' the same issue as yours but if you have replaced the thermal paste and you're still having issues the card is likely toast.

yeah, this is my last resort. I took her apart and replaced everything and just fired my system up with no issues. so far so good. I haven't tried a game yet but at least it has fired up. If it crashes during gaming it's done.

So, the card works fine with the windows drivers but as soon as i install the most recent drivers from AMD it artifacts and crashes at boot. I suspect the windows drivers boot into windows because the Core clocks and Mem clocks are set super low.

Now i have to try and identify what kind of card it is to see if I can do an RMA. Can I figure out the card maker by the S/N or P/N?
