I currently have the resolution set to extreme in the vive settings.

The fuzziness is there in all resolutions.

Got a follow-up from Vive support today. Basically asking me what my resolution is as well.

I'll let you guys know how the next unit looks when it gets in. Bad thing is that I'm set to go on vacation next week so I doubt that it will be here in time.

Headset is certainly warmer than my CV1 when sitting on my desk, got to remember to turn off the connect box. Still verifying with support if this headset even has a sleep mode.

That said, I really like it. Massive upgrade from my CV1, ticks every box I was looking for in a new headset.

Biggest issues for me are the heat while idle (Hasn't bothered me on my face) and the glare a little...but coming from the CV1 it's not that bad.

Love the clarity, love the FOV, audio is at least as good as my CV1, with better isolation. Comfort is fine, don't really notice it. Finally getting settings dialed in for my face.

Went ahead and bought the HP Reverb G2 for $499. Price was too good pass up, and much better alternative than the full Vive Pro 2 setup for $1400. Should be a great upgrade from my current Samsung Odyssey

You can't really go wrong with the G2, IMO. Much lower price, really good screen, and also better mobility and less hassle since you aren't limited by the base stations. Windows MR hand tracking isn't perfect, but if you already had an Odyssey you know what to expect (it's actually a little better than the Odyssey's tracking due to the side cameras, just sucks there's no downward facing camera).

                  Comment

Yup, price was from Walmart of all places.

I'm used to the tracking limitations of the Odyssey, so hopefully the G2 will improve on this.

Really bought it for the higher resolution screen though. Been holding off playing HL Alex until I got a higher resolution display.

I've seen people say playing alex on the G2 was like playing it again for the first time coming from older headsets, that they notice way more detail and little things you just couldn't see before.

I must have gotten a defective unit. Was totally disappointed in the G2.

It definitely is higher resolution than the Samsung Odyssey, but it had this odd bluish tint overall, blacks were washed out (thus can't handle dark scenes as well as the Odyssey), and the vertical field of view was smaller and so felt like I was watching through binoculars. I had to double check they actually sent me the G2 and not the G1.

I don't know if I'm going to RMA this, I might just return it and wait for the price of a Vive Pro 2 to come down. No wonder it was $499, I felt like they sent me a defective unit. It was bought directly from HP from Walmart marketplace. Definitely can see the higher resolution but the binocular like vision, the excessively "cool" saturation (vs balanced or warm), the bad handling of dark scenes makes this unusable for me.

Edit: Added some quick half assed through the lens pics with my phone. Couldn't really focus but you can see the color difference clearly.

Sent these to HP support and a few VR forums as well.

Black levels on the G2 are not as good due to it being an LCD. I didn't notice my unit having a particularly bluish tint compared to my Odyssey though. I can compare them and see.

When I got the G2 my impressions were that blacks certainly were not as good, but brightness and colors were pretty good, and of course the the higher resolution trumped everything.

There may honestly be something wrong with your unit.

Well I feel like an idiot.... I forgot to remove the protective lens film that it shipped with, which happened to have a blue tint.

Colors look normal now. I'll check black levels later when I run some horror VR games. Since that's what I mostly play, needs to be able to handle dark scenes good. Hopefully it will be good enough and not too much of a problem, removing the film appears to have improved black tones alot in the WMR high rise home area.

Don't feel too bad, I did that with one headset too. I can't remember for sure, but it might have actually been on the G2!

Black levels on the G2 are definitely a disappointment. All dark scenes are basically washed out. Tried Paranormal activity VR and boy was it a significant downgrade from the Odyssey. Nothing that's supposed to be pitch black (like an unlit hallway) is actually black, like dark greyish glow.

Looks like I'm going to keep both headsets depending on which game I play.

Looks like HTC is taking their sweet damn time with this RMA.

They received the shipment last Friday and are waiting on processing before shipping out of the new headset.

That new headset will take a week to get here too.

Someone has modified the OpenVR DLL to support FSR. Could be useful for those of us running higher res headsets.

That kind of defeats the purpose of the higher resolution headsets since FSR effectively reduces the resolution, which can be picked up way more easily with the eye in VR. Can see in some of the comments some fine detail is compromised, something you don't really want in VR.

Well, I guess it comes down to whether you can run those resolutions natively. If you can't you just have to take what you can get. Ideally you'd just have a fast enough GPU to run native res or higher with supersampling.

That being said, I actually think one of the major advantages of higher res headsets is the lack of SDE, which you can still benefit from you are running at reduced res.

So HTC has escalated my case up to another department. It'll take that department a few days to get in contact with me.

They received the return but they can't tell if they have processed it yet.

The new headset *should have* been here by the latest on the 8th.

                                          It's not even in processing.

I had chatted with a guy about it on Monday and he had no f'ing clue what was happening so he sent me back to the Return Specialist.... I basically told the guy that they hadn't contacted me about anything and he was clueless..

I think that they lost the return after they received it.

This 8 day process is turning into a month long crazy mess...

                                          This is getting freaking ridiculous.

The return and repair department was overwhelmed. They blamed it on Covid. Anyway, they said they were going to process the return today.

                                              We will see....

I'm really disappointed in black levels of the G2, and also disappointed consumer VR manufacturers chose LCD rather than OLED this time around for their next gen headset.

Seems the only OLED headsets available now are the uber expensive ones. Need a consumer version of this:

-_- weird display tech in that guy. It's actually using both OLED and LCD. Where the centre is a 1920x1920 OLED along with 2880x2720 LCD panel to fill the peripheral vision.

I wonder if I'll get lucky and get hands on with one of these at some point

I think it must have something to do with OLED displays not being readily available or affordable at such high resolutions. Ideally I also would like to have 4 or 5K OLED at 120 Hz. Based off of the Vive Pro 2 and Reverb G2 I honestly don't think we need higher res or refresh rate than that (it can always be better, but we'll be deep into diminishing returns at that point).

With that being said, I guess I am fortunate in that I am not that bothered by the black levels in the G2 and Vive Pro 2. Certainly I'm willing to tolerate it in order to not have to deal with SDE.

Got the new headset in today. It's night and day difference. Something was screwy on the original set. The clarity has increased dramatically and the screens are darker and look much better. There are still God rays but not nearly as bad as the first headset that I got.

This should last me until someone releases an OLED and a good set of lenses.

The United States Federal Trade Commission today announced it has filed an amended complaint with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, renewing its effort to sue Facebook over alleged anticompetitive practices. The initial lawsuit was filed in late 2020 and was tossed out back in June by a judge which argued that the FTC failed to make its case. The Commission is seeking a remedy which includes spinning out Instagram and WhatsApp. Oculus, the company’s XR organization, is not directly mentioned in the suit, but the amended complaint brings the “metaverse” into the picture for the first time.

Image is super crisp and has a larger sweet spot, along with better colours and contrast. Headset is far more comfortable with mechanical IPD slider, and tracking is better. Played some Alyx and MSFS2020 and am very pleased with it. Need to find some more good VR games, it's slim pickings for the most part.

Downloaded last night, this game is a blast! Looks great, runs great, and is a fast paced FPS in VR. A lot of fun.
