    Make MMC Opensource

AFAIK, MMC isn't performing as good compared to other offerings available lately. I'm not going to list any names. Eventhough it's continued to be updated, the bug fixes are not improving even the basic TV watching and input functionality. Maybe MMC should be stripped back of all features and re-written from the ground up. I would put my vote in for opening the source or parts of it for other programmers/hobbists to see if they can improve the functionality of our cards. What do you guys think?

For some time now I have been of the opinion that ATI would make a fundamental change in their software package leading up to Microsoft’s new Windows Vista OS and finally executed definitively when Vista ships.

The AVIVO transcode utility (AKA AvivoXCode) software technology is a prime example of how reluctant ATI can be when it comes to supporting a diverging code base since ATI could have easily and generously made it available to all ATI users.

This leads me to believe that ATI would much prefer supporting only one “MMC” like application and ATI’s new “CMC” (AKA Catalyst Media Center ) has already been announced. This IMO may indicate that MMC may be relegated to bug fixes only until such time as the product is no longer supported while ATI transfers the majority of its support efforts to the new CMC app.

I don’t see ATI making MMC Open-source but rather gradually or possibly abruptly dropping it in favor of CMC.

It makes no sense to me for them to open source it. Especially now that Catalyst Media Centre is announced. But even before that it wouldn't have made sense.

There is already several open source mmc type apps that are arguably better than mmc. ATi would have been better off to drop mmc and adopt/contribute to an open source app of their choosing.
