Windows Media Center Edition Video Conversion Utility

    Background: with 6.4 driver:
Windows Media Center Edition Video Conversion Utility
Catalyst® 6.4 introduces a Windows MCE Video Conversion utility. This utility allows users to convert video content that is recorded by MCE, or video content that is available to MCE, to variety of different formats. The video content can be converted to MPEG-2, MPEG-4 SP, MPEG-4 AVC and Windows Media. Ipod Video and PSP video are listed as separate formats for easy recognition.

OK now we have that, how do we use it, because in the driver news thread, some say that only 1x00 users can use it ?!?!?!

hmm would be a thing that they would do, but really.... this could be useful to soo many of us MCE'ers.

i haven't tested it, but will tonight. i just wondered if anyone out here has had experience with it, or used it if it requires the 1x00 cards...

ATI AVIVO Video Converter 1.12 download for ALL ATI video cards

ATI has artificially locked their AVIVO Video Converter Utility to only install and work on X1000 series cards. The utility in its inception did not actually use the X1000 series GPU for hardware assisted transcoding so there was no need to exclude older ATI cards. There were plans to implement X1000 series GPU hardware assistance but they may not have done so yet.

Anyway, there is a hacked version that will work on systems regardless of which video card is installed and this illustrates how unnecessary it was for ATI to exclude non X1000 series cards.

If the original download link is no longer actively serving the file (ATI AVIVO Video Converter v1.12 (2.28MB)) you can probably find it by searching for the file name AvivoVideoConverter1_12.rar.

I wouldn’t use it though, I have a number of programs that can natively edit or convert DVR-MS files.

Agustus: Would you mind sharing your knowledge in those programs?

i know dcut and another command line converter, and then there are two software converters that charge, Power converter is one.

i haven't had enough time to investigate and i'd rather not pay for something that just converts a file. but maybe if it's batch run or can run automatically.

      so what are you using?

You can probably find a few free apps over at thegreenbutton.com that do what you want.

You can probably find the hacked AvivoVideoConverter1_12.rar too if you do a little looking online.

I used to use Intervideo’s WinDVD Creator 2, which can import DVR-MS files and start editing immediately but I find that I don’t really care to edit these files anymore. I also have Cyberlink’s MakeDVD, which can convert and burn to DVD via a remote EZ.

I mostly just use the built in DVD burning utility of MCE 2K5 now. I burn to DVD+RW, watch and then burn another show.

I was a touch worried that ATI had forgot about their multimedia past. It looks like they are trying to make ammends with the Media Center crown with 6.4. Here is a snippet and a link showing you the goodies.

Video Quality Improvements Improvements have been made to the Avivo video processing engine during standard definition (SD) video playback. Edge enhancement or sharpening effectively improves image quality by enhancing details lost during encoding and processing. Noise reduction algorithms are improved to ensure original detail is preserved, while removing unwanted noise.

well i installed it on both computers and absolutely nothing.

                though i don't have a 1X00 card.

can anyone test this out and see if they get the utility?

The "Windows Media Center Edition Video Conversion Utility" is no longer included in the Catalyst 6.4 Release notes.

It simply disapeared without a trace, no comment, no nothing.

It's just plain not in the drivers, it would seem. Just a guess: they probably took it out and forgot to update the release notes.

The ONLY reason I updated my MCE 2005 PC was for this declared function. ATI should, at the very least, comment on it.

geez, this would have been AWESOME... but then ... welll

mmc would be nice to have it installed through that... then that would be a point to install it.

                    ugh....

i need a utility that shrinks it down.... easy, fast, and no headaches.
