This. I mean who believes a gpu with 3x more transistors, 2.5x more shaders and 3x more Tflops is going to stay only 15-30% faster than its own line of a previous gen? Driver improvements over time has been how AMD does business and this is just par for the course. And considering the fairly radical move to chiplets its even more understandable. Not saying it means itll beat the 4090 in everything, that gpu is just that much bigger than N31, but my bet is it'll often be not far behind.

And one of the things to look forward to is better cpus to remove some of that cpu bottleneck. The upcoming 7K X3D line for one should help in the medium term.

Except AMD need to stop doing this. They should come better prepared with drivers to make their products look enticing early rather than a few months prior to next gen release. This is hurting their sales, also gives reason for NV to charge you an arm.

True but I give them some slack this time due to the change to chiplets (I used to give them some slack in the past due to them not having any money or enough staff).

It would have been a challenge even for Nvidia to do chiplets tho and they love money more than life itself. That they havent done it yet to save tons of $$$ more in BOM costs tells us its hard. Ill give AMD 6 months as they now have a lot more people in R&D than they used to. They cant wait 1-2 years to get their drivers up to speed like they did for RDNA2 which shouldnt have been the case as they had the ressources to fix that.

I once saw a quote that said AMD is in the business of making GPU's whilst Nvidia is in the business of making software for their GPU's. AMD hardware is great but yeh.. Nv really know how to maximise the strengths of their hardware.

So I just saw HWU 7900XT review and oh man.. at $900 who is this for?? They need to restructure the pricing of xt and xtx asap. Maybe $750 and $900 would make more sense in the current market..

This passage says it all for me from their review...

That's a problem because in almost every measurable metric the RTX 4080 is a superior product to the 7900 XTX. The RTX 4080 offers comparable rasterization performance, significantly better ray tracing performance, better upscaling as DLSS is superior to FSR, it also uses less power, and the media engine is better supported. The only thing going for the Radeon 7900 XTX is the fact that it's 17% cheaper, but when spending $1,000 on a graphics card, do you really care about $200? Wouldn't you just spend the extra money to get the superior product? If we were talking about lower price points, say $600 to $700, the percentage difference is much the same, but we feel someone looking to spend $600 might value $100 a lot more than someone spending $1,000 values $200.

I think the problem is AMD bought ATi (and also badly overpaid for it, which almost put them out of business a few years later). But basically the problem is that AMD's bread and butter is CPUs, so that is their focus. GPUs are always on the back burner.

ATi was in the business of making GPUs so they had to place full emphasis on them, and for the most part they were always competitive with Nvidia. Sometimes behind and maybe trailing a little in market share, but it wasn't an 80-20 or 90-10 situation. As soon as AMD bought ATi they started falling away, which granted was partially because the company was seriously on the ropes. But even now I don't think they focus the resources they need on it.

Anyway, it is what it is I suppose.

It might be possible. Performance in Call of Duty is way higher than in other titles (actually beating the 4090), which suggests that some sort of optimization can result in big performance increases. The performance profile of the 7900XTX currently seems very weird. It's all across the map. Sometimes it's barely faster than the 6950 XT, on rare occasion it's faster than the 4090, which you really wouldn't expect based on its average performance level.

I think there's more reason to hope for driver improvements than usual. However, a lot of times weird performance like this can be the result of specific hardware quirks and those don't always get fixed.

Id say yes except some RT games are so precisely coded for RTX it may be a challenge. Portal RTX underutilizes RDNA2 RT by up to 90% in one bit I saw... not sure a driver revision can fix that. Itll be a mixed bag but def with perf currently only 15-30% above a 6950 theres room to grow for both raster and RT.

Sold out quick up here to the COD crowd. Even the badly priced 7900xt to my surprise... I was sure those would eat some dust on the shelves for a bit at those prices.

Yeah it seems like initial stock had no problems selling out. Despite being underwhelmed I thought about getting a 7900 XTX. Regardless of its performance relative to the 4090 (which is more than I want to pay for a GPU), it's substantially faster in general than my 3080. If it was in stock I might have ordered one.

However, I am not motivated to fight to get a GPU at these prices, or maybe even in general. If the card is not readily available for purchase, or the AIBs price their cards $100-200 higher then they're not getting a sale from me.

I also won't even consider a 7900 XT unless they cut the price by at least $100, and even then I am not sure I'd be interested.

Well, it seems that VR performance is pretty bad, and the card is well off from the 4080, so regardless of what I said above I am basically out on this entire line-up, since VR is primarily where I need more performance. I'd say this is pretty disappointing because RDNA2 seemed like it had closed much of the VR performance deficit. Granted it only matters for the few of of us who play in VR.

Maybe it's a driver problem that can be ironed out because sometimes it's apparently slower than a 6900 XT, but for now it's a bad buy for VR.

Ya $1550 CAD up here for the same model. Range is from $1400-2000 wc. 4080 starts at $1800 CAD. But Id need a good few driver updates to see how it goes.

Wow 66c on load on the XFX Merc 7900xtx model. This is one cool running card. And it oc's to 3 ghz.

Seems the AIB models have a huge room of improvement due to the 3x8 pins. Some are hitting 23% more than the AMD ones. There's clearly alot of driver issues, and possibly design flaw in silicon causing the bad clocks.

The tuf is ruining some of amd's marketing points with its size though.

AMD deserves some props by actually letting the AIB sell the cheaper reference cards in all markets, MSRP doesn't mean **** if you never have the option of picking up something like the FE locally.
