The bad thing about 290X cooler fan:

Note – The card has tremendous wattage and produces alot of heat. The new PowerTune algorithm helps keep the temperatures down but only at the cost of higher noise which makes the blower fan runs at 100% speed that is really loud.
Temp go down, fan go up to full speed very loud as jet engine at 5220RPM.
"Temp go down, fan go up"?! That doesn't even make sense. And it's not said in the linked article.

The card does consume a lot of power and dumps quite some heat though.

After reading this article...I am really proud of AMD ...

Microsoft has failed and while some think it is blissfully ignorant of that fact, the XBox One shows that the company is indeed aware of it's plight.

AMD is a saint in comparasion to MS..Even if 290x will be a heater and a blower it will still have a much much better image and than MS products
So .. MS turned down Mantle (one Nail in the coffin) , MS Win8 isn't very fun and gamers didn't need 11.2 (two nails in the coffin) , MS killed PC gaming ... well what's around the corner ? MS just have the "secret" for getting the people hate them...They succeded ..

Didn't they do the same with the 360?

Even the original xbox packaging had the microsoft logo hidden in a corner.

MS turned down Mantle but if it works well they will steal it and put some of it in DX12

Dont worry you can preorder it starting october 3rd! Of course there will be no places in the U.S. where you can actually do that, but it was the thought that counts.

Interesting rant from Charlie, not sure Win 8.1 will do much for the tide of change happening at MS. Will 290X perform better, worst or the same on 8.1 compared to 8 or 7? I do believe the interface for MS 8 series is weak to bad but the OS itself is, ahmmm rather awesome. I am wondering if for games it would be better than 7? That is the only significance for me and the 290x or 290.

I heard that as well but not sure why? Better use of multiple threads or cores? Game using DX11.2? Release version performance in the end? I would like to see an in depth evaluation of gaming on Windows 7 versus Windows 8.x on various different types of hardware from AMD, Intel, NVidia. I just feel like this probably won't happen except with a few snippets.

I think it was cpu optimization for cores. I know they released 2 patches to try and solve it and supposedly didn't.

was paid for by nv most CPU bound if not just made up

What we can take from these graphs is the AMD R9 290x is a solid graphics card that isn’t as fast as a GTX Titan in most games, but stands on equal footing with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780. This was expected, but what isn’t great news is AMD’s new flagship part consumes more power than Titan even though it is the slower of the two.

If there's any truth to that then I may be looking at a GTX780. I just can't fathom it consuming more power than Titan while being slower. Power consumption, as wierd as it may seem, is important to me, as is heat output. I'm still waiting for official results as there may be more to the story than what we see with those leaked results. Giving AMD the benefit of the doubt here. For all we know it's a driver bug- that'd make sense imo.

Either way still not buying a new card till first part of next year. By then drivers should be mature and prices should have stabilized to some extent. As it stands now, with the information available, I'm leaning more towards the 780 as I'm expecting the 780Ti to push the 780 closer to the $500-$550 price range. I can entertain the thought of picking up a 780 for that price.

Thankfully its only 1 week if true. That site's track record is pretty horrendous. 7950 and GTX670 came a couple of months later.

We'll battlefield 4 releases on the 29th, so I imagine the 290x release date is solid. I can't imagine a bf4 bundle is going to do much for early adopters if the card comes out after the bf4 release date. I know personally if the card doesn't come out before bf 4, I'll be going green. It's the first next gen game out and a lot of people are uphrading now to get ready for it. They miss that date they miss the boat as any one who is willing to wait is also willing to wait for the 780ti, ati needs to strike while the iron is hot or they will miss the boat
