Have you tried experimenting with the hardware accelerated cursor setting with a tweaker (or by editing the registry if you are comfortable)? My only real guess.
Main System
Pentium 2.4C @ 3.0 GHz - FSB 250x4, 1024MB PC3200 DDR, Asus P4P800
2x WD360GD (Raptor) SATA RAID
Windows XP
ATI 9800 XT 256MB
Terratec Aureon Space 7.1
Rage3D Tweaker has that setting in there, among many other tweaks. I'm pretty sure UniTuner and Radeonator (XP/2K only) do as well.
Look under "Local Machine"/Software/ATI Technologies(I think)/Driver somewhere. Heh, I could be completely wrong about that path in the registry (completely off the top of my head)...try some searching if you feel comfortable editing the registry.

Hey just got time to install the game before bed for a quick look. I do not have cursor problems in any other games, yet I have the same garbled mess you describe. Have you tried the acceleration suggestion yet, and how did it work for you? I am just hoping its not an issue with the 8500! I am going to try disable acceleration just through windows and see. Will report back.
Well I tried disable acceleration, no dice. Anyone else have an 8500 and this game having similiar issues? Thanks in advance for any ideas or comments... I really want to play this game, it looks cool!
Yeah!!! I figured out how to make the ugly cursor go away... actually it was just a case of RTFM, or in this case the readme file for the game. Here's what to do:
Video Card specific:
- ATI(TM) Radeon 7200/8500/DDR and Xpert 2000/Rage 128 Pro Based cards -
If you get a graphic corruption on the mouse cursor, disable cursor and bitmap
accelerations. Double-Click the 'Display' icon in the control panel. Click the 'Settings'
tab, click the 'Advanced' button, click the 'Troubleshooting' Tab then move the
'Hardware acceleration' slider one notch to the left.
For some reason on full acceleration it is corrupted, but when I do it just one notch to the left of full as described above my problem goes away. Just wanted to share this with fellow ragers, as I really value the community support function of this board.
