Halo 2's campaign is pretty terrible. It's the only halo game I'd say is objectively bad and it got super high scores. I heard the MP is good, but the campaign is trash. Halo 1 and 3 are the best in the series by a decent margin, speaking from a single player basis.

I would agree that Halo 2 has sizable chunks that have aged poorly, and parts that were rushed, but I wouldn't call it "the worst".
    • Halo 2 looks terrible on an HDTV. Textures are very ugly, and colors aren't great. It was designed for CRTs, and still works well on a CRT. Actually, alot of the game is very attractive on a CRT, and is still one of the best looking games for consoles at the time.

    • Halo 2 had a very "sporty" feel, pushing alot of gameplay elements a bit over the top, and often unbalanced. Especially the laser sword lunge attack, where it flings you like 20 feet. Actually I thought it was really fun... but I can see why they toned it down for the sequel.

    • Story cinematics were really amazing for the time, but the remastered version improvements really prove how alot of the incomprehensible story actually was due to the original's limited ability effectively tell the story with the graphics limitations they had. I had played through the original game several times over the years, and always thought the story was a mess... so I was really surprised playing the remaster and seeing how tight the storytelling was there. Those improved cinematics really make all the difference, especially for differentiating key characters, etc.

    • Halo 2's ending was clearly rushed, and it showed.

    • Halo 2's multiplayer is shockingly good, and still stands up incredibly well. I like to attend PRGE each year, and they typically have a large xbox lan set up, with 16 player Halo2 games going. I'm always shocked at how good that game is, when you drop into a large multiplayer match. There's been a couple years where I've gone with friends or cousins, and we end up spending an entire evening playing Halo 2 there... completely losing track of time.

Single player was highly polished too. Halo 3 takes an "everything and the kitchen sink" approach, bringing in everything from the first 2 games, carefully balancing it, adding tons of great set pieces. It really worked, at least for the time.

Looking back on it, it's easy to criticize Halo 3 for it's overall lack of innovation, but that's kindof missing the point, that Halo 3 really nailed everything it did.

I missed the Xbox 360 era completely, so I really find people's enthusiasm for Halo 3 (and especially ODST) a bit surprising.

Of the Bungie games, they are the most bland. What makes Infinite so good is that it resembles 1, 2, and Reach.

Don’t know about entitled but I do like close to 100 fps or higher on my shooters. That is why I play 1440P. I am ok with 60-85 fps for non FPS games.

Halo Infinite runs like dog **** on a 3070 maxed out at 1440P with around 60-65 fps and that is why I ordered a 3080 12 GB for my secondary computer. Same was true for Far Cry 6 with texture streaming issues on 3070.

Finally I can play those games without this nonsense. I really hope Nvidia doesn’t cripple the 4070 with 8 GB ram nonsense.

I remember playing HL on my mom's Pentium II (with no graphics accelerator). I think I played at 320x280, and probably never went above 25fps.

Looks at your above statement, and realizing how far we've come / how entitled we are today.

Don’t recall any issues with it on the 3080. Pretty sure I was running 4K also. Then again I don’t need 100+ fps on a single player shooter and gsync.

Hard to really rank them, but...
    1. Halo 3 - Amazingly polished, epic in every way.
    2. Halo 1 - Absolutely ground-breaking for it's time. Several levels still stand up very well today, especially the outdoor levels. Best graphics found on any platform at the time... it was prolly 2 years before PC games started to surpass it. I miss those days when console launch titles could leap-frog PC graphics. Loads of nostalgia there.
    3. Halo 2 - Loads of core-gameplay polish, lots of interesting set-pieces, spectacular multiplayer with a more sporty feel. Incredible graphics for a console game at the time.
    4. Halo Reach - Great side-quest kind of game. Had performance issues on the 360 (that got resolved with bc support on xbone) that hampered my enjoyment quite a bit.
    5. Halo 4 - Amazing graphics, especially for the 360. Good storytelling. Lots of good action, when it wasn't too monotonous.
    6. Halo ODST - Fun mission pack. There was a game-breaking bug that stopped me from accessing the last part of the game though... eventually I started over and finally beat it but I was pissed.
    7. Halo 5 - 60fps is nice. No splitscreen coop was unforgiveable though. Storyline was a mess... too bad 'cause they had some really great actors' performances.

Haven't ranked Halo Infinite yet, as I'm still only a few hours in.

Yeah 5 was quite a disappointment. Still a great game though... or at least some elements of one mixed in with a bunch of frustrating nonsense and poorly written story beats. But halo is like pizza... even bad pizza is good pizza.

Most marine weapons give you ammo when you walk over them in all Halo games. Same with needler. Energy weapons are a first that usually required a weapon swap.

Single player was pretty meh overall. The story is flat and the cortana angle felt undercooked. I didn't enjoy the boss battle focus. Boss battle, repeating room, boss battle, copied room, boss battle, duplicate room, two bosses, then 4 rooms the same in a row. Felt like I was playing destiny in a claustrophobic version of the Library from halo 1. Echo 216 is not that likable. Master chef can barely say more than one word. The open world is pretty meh too; FOBs are literally just a single platform with enemies around it.

The combat obviously carries it. I used the threat sensor a lot indoors. The grapple is quite useful to get to ledges or steal vehicles or grab weapons. I wish it had more range though. The sentinel beam is very good and in the second half I felt like the devs knew this and just kept giving me ammo for it. Did Halo 5 give you ammo for weapons if you walked over them? That's a nice change from the old games where you'd have to pick up the weapon of the same type just to get full ammo.

Outside you're so much more effective in a vehicle when coming across any group in the open world. So I'd just stay in a ghost and just run people over, since it's generally far more deadly than any weapon and has unlimited ammo + speed. Sometimes enemies throw you off it, but often they don't bother to get on so you can just hop back on without any loss of health. I'd even go so far as try to skate up inclines with it just to keep using it.

People waiting for coop probably have the right idea, seems like the outside bits would play better with a buddy riding shotgun or using another vehicle. As a solo experience I give it about 7/10

Thank God for the multiplayer, it game me something to play after quitting Overwatch. Overwatch is such a garbage game, it makes you feel awful and there's no way to quantify your progress, there's no clear metrics and you depend on other 5 guys so whatever you do right or wrong is super hard to tell.

Wish they would make another game like Starcraft 2 where you could measure your own progress. I got to #1 master playing Zerg and it was so satisfying after playing for so long. "Single player" or compact team competitive multiplayer games are my favorite, games like Halo, Starcraft 2, WoW, etc.

The aiming on Halo MP feels PERFECT as well, almost as good as counter strike's mouse feel. At the moment I just wish there were more maps available.

The devs should have said "hrm now that the player can almost instantly change his distance to the enemy with the grapple, maybe we should raise the limit to 3-4 weapons so he can switch as the situation calls for."

AR a bit from distance, grapple close for some shotgun fun, grapple to a high ledge for a bit of sniping, flank nearby for some smg action - all without the annoyance of having to drop/swap weapons from the ground or 'chests'.

Lastly in every other shooter game when you pick up a dead minibosses 'big bad heavy weapon' to use for a bit, you keep all your other weapons. Run out or ammo with it you just drop it and back to your loadout. In this game you drop your weapon when picking up a miniboss gun. So annoying. Reminds me of eurojank devs who refuse to learn from what other devs are doing and keep making games like its 2005.
Halo has always been about making the most use of guns around you. With the grappling mechanic I can't believe that this is even a complaint anymore. Play some more and you will get used to it. Btw all the mini boss weapons get stored in FOBs where you can get them again from.

You can pick up mounted turrets and you keep your other two weapons. Hell I spend half the time with a turret when attacking a base because it kills things pretty quick.

I'm not having too much of an issue with the ammo because the scan shows you exactly where to get more, and the plasma/kinetic recharge nodes are pretty plentiful.

So far this game is like Halo Cry: Destiny Edition. Combat is fine but I don't really get the huge excitement over the grapple. All it means is that the world has 50 billion explosive canisters and I've died from them enough times for that to be annoying. I guess the grapple helps to navigate the rather rocky terrain and stun the shield dudes.
