Looks like Digital Foundry isn't going to do any performance testing on any version of elden ring before the day one patch.

We've seen reports that we're 'not allowed' to show Elden Ring performance pre-launch. Not strictly true: we've been asked to show performance analysis in our content based on the day one patch to show the game as you'll play it, which is a reasonable ask and nothing new.

Still awaiting my key from Green Man Gaming.

As long as I get it at least a couple hours before release on Thursday I'm good. Want to be playing Thursday night as soon as it launches.

Knowing you I bet you'll be pretty close at least.

I'm trying to catch a flu to stay home and play this.
No question is dumb if you do not know the answer.
Q: How can you move on in life if all you care about is pussy and videogames?
                A: You don't.

The only thing I’m questioning is the release time. Steam says around 6pm tomorrow for us, but all other websites I’ve seen say the 25th.

I hope I hope it’s just where we fall on the global release…I really want to play this tomorrow evening.

I would go by what it says in my Steam library - Feb 24.

Either way, we will be playing really soon!

I’ve never been able to get very deep into Demon’s Souls or any of the thematically similar follow-ups developer From Software has become known for in recent years. The last time I seriously tried, delving into Dark Souls II in 2014, I documented the “maddeningly beautiful suffering” I endured while dying 65 times in an eight-hour slog to beat a single boss.

While that experience gave me some appreciation for From Software’s uncompromising game design, it was also enough to convince me that I didn’t have the temperament to pour dozens of hours into these sorts of games. I get why so many people find this unforgiving style appealing, and I’ve even willingly dipped my toes into From Software’s further catalog from time to time. But I just couldn’t overcome the frustration factor necessary to really commit to a deep dive into these meticulously crafted worlds.

                                          ...

That kind of talk was enough to get me to dive deep into the Soulsborne world one more time. And I’m glad I did. While Elden Ring doesn’t really make the Soulsborne experience any easier, per se, its open-world design and gameplay adjustments tweak the balance of rewards and frustrations just enough to make the whole experience enjoyable—even for a skeptic like me.

                                          ...

The game is at its most frustrating when you encounter a battle that you know is technically possible to win but only with perfect execution. Such was the case for me with a relatively minor boss, a giant walking tree wielding a stone axe roughly three times as tall as my character. I fought this enemy while on horseback, using the enhanced speed and maneuverability to keep myself just outside of its attack range before darting in for a quick strike.

After just a few attempts, I had memorized the tree-beast’s patterns and could reliably lure it into leaving me an opening for a quick strike. But even a single mistake or misread would lead to me getting walloped by a series of thundering axe blows, usually killing me immediately. I spent a good 45 minutes repeatedly throwing myself at this boss before I could execute the basic attack pattern flawlessly enough to get the 30 or 40 hits I needed to kill the enemy without getting hit even once myself.

Once I succeeded, I felt less satisfied and more resigned to the game’s machinations. Sure, I had proven I could endure one of the game’s tougher challenges (though it's far from the toughest I’ve seen so far). But that’s mostly what it was—a test of endurance. The base “challenge” of mastering the boss’ patterns took just a few minutes. Finding the patience and focus to execute that pattern perfectly for five or more minutes at a time felt like a grind.

Yeah I've been saying I suspected the open world nature of the game itself will lend to it being easier in general. Simply because you have more path options if you get stuck on a tough spot.

That said, the difficulty reputation thing about their games is way overblown. They really are not that difficult and intimidating once you put in the time to learn them, and if you're not opposed to try different things. They are only really tough when you are stubborn about playing them a certain way, and banging your head against the wall "dying 65 times in an eight-hour slog to beat a single boss" because you wont change your approach.

I feel like this genre of games really separates the impatient from the patient gamers. That's all. It doesn't make you a better player if you succeed in these games, just makes you more patient and invested.

I wonder if elden ring is hiding the really hard stuff behind hidden/optional content like bloodborne did?

Whenever I see anything like “I’ve never been very far…..” I immediately tune it out.

Sekiro aside, there hasn’t been a Souls game yet that patience and observation won’t make drastically easier.

Elden Ring might prove to be the exception to the rule, but I’d rather hear it from a player that really knows the formula.

Elden Ring's launch has been marked by strong reviews praising its gameplay and art direction, but also questions over …

First, let's look at the situation on consoles. The performance metrics we saw in the game's network test last year seem largely unchanged on PS5 and Series X. Both continue to offer two modes - a frame-rate mode and a quality mode. However, even running on the launch day patch 1.02, the frame-rate mode continues to run at a range of 45-60fps on PS5 and Series X, while the quality modes on each range between 30-60fps. Both machines run with entirely unlocked frame-rates, and much like the network test, there's still no 30fps cap to even out the wavering reading in quality mode. The result? A highly variable performance for the quality mode in particular, where 60fps is rarely - if ever - achieved on PS5 or Series X.
Meanwhile, hitting a stable 60fps on PS5 involves another tactic entirely. Sadly, VRR support isn't available on Sony's machine right now, but, as with the network test, simply running the PS4 app on PS5 clears up the frame-rate to a smooth 60fps. The trade-off? The game runs at a lower resolution - at what appears to be a reconstructed 1800p - and with lower settings in grass density than the native PS5 version. This is fundamentally the PS4 Pro codepath, using the higher power of PS5 to hit a more consistent performance level. Even with these trade-offs, running the PS4 app on PS5 is currently the best option on any console to achieve a consistent 60fps - and comes recommended if you value outright performance over image quality and higher-end graphical features.
The PC situation is also worth clarifying. As it currently stands the PC version using the latest 1.02 patch has a number of issues that will affect all hardware configurations on all graphical settings presets. Elden Ring is From Software's first foray into low-level APIs on PC and the game uses DirectX 12. As we have seen in other DX12 titles, there can be severe and distracting frame-time stuttering issues.

First there are stutters of up to 250 milliseconds in length when new effects, enemies, and areas appear on screen. These types of stutter lessen as the play experience goes on and enemies, areas, and effects are revisited by the player. A second and more pervasive stutter appears to be tied to loading new game areas - when traversing the terrain, moving from one area to the next can cause minor one-off frame drops a few times a minute, or at worst, tumbling frame-time issues that drop the frame-rate from a steady 60 into the 40s.

Variable refresh rate monitors using G-Sync or Freesync help alleviate a level of the distracting nature of some of these issues, but leaning on the technology is not a good situation in light of how the console versions do not suffer from these stutters. Other issues to note are the lack of ultrawide screen support, no support for frame-rates above 60fps, and unintuitive graphical options that lack visible scaling. As we have seen with other titles suffering from similar issues such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Halo Infinite, it could be sensible to wait for further patches before investing time into the PC version of Elden Ring.
Last edited by Mangler; Feb 24, 2022, 07:11 AM.
