Some of the enemies and areas you’ll have to go through, just consider them suicide runs to get gear, but once you’re up and running you’ll wreck most of the early game.

I don't think Elden Ring has anything like that. Only thing I can think of is there's a mixed physick tear that will prevent rune loss on death. But of course you have to time using it correctly. Also of course the Sacrificial Twig talismans. But nothing that will help you if you already died.

Those Lyndell sewers are tricky. I spent some time down there and opened one shortcut but still got stuck and didn't figure out how to progress so I left.
I’m kind of happy they didn’t implement that, as nice as it would be to have sometimes. It would have ruined the whole “Failure is punished harshly” trope associated with these Fromsoft games.

It’s one of the things I love to hate about them

Ask away if you have any questions. Between the folks regularly chatting here we’ve covered most kinds of builds and might be able to help a bit. Have fun

It wasn't too bad. Managed to retrace my steps correctly and my runes were outside of the room that triggered the fight. I retreated back to camp with 67k. Crushed a few runes and levelled up so that I can do whatever I do next safely. I think I might come back to the sewers later. There's a catacomb that I ignored first time around for exactly this reason (too many help runes). This would probably be a good time for it.

Update: Wow.. the Mt Gelmir Hero's Tomb is no joke. Just the entrance is brutal. Really cool, but brutal.

Agreed. The whole risk of losing souls/runes upon a 2nd death before retrieving is worth almost all the tension in these games. They just wouldn't be the same if you could mitigate that risk with a summoner's candle like item.

Personally I just always try to avoid going into an unknown and potentially dangerous area or situation while holding a ton of runes. If I have a lot, but can't level up yet I'll just go either farm a bit until I can, or spend them somehow. I've managed to do OK in this playthrough. Don't think I've ever lost any yet. I am a super cautious player though, kind of to a fault.

Nice. Let me know if there's anything worth it down there if you go back to clear it out. I assume there's a boss, and potentially some decent items but I'm not sure its worth my time. I decided to just focus on bigger fish from now on until I roll the credits. I just don't have the time to keep exploring everything unfortunately.

Progress wise I did play a bit this morning. Finished most of Nokron and got the particular item Ranni requested. Really cool doppelganger boss fight there, and I got the mimic tear ashes I keep hearing about which seem really awesome. I received from Ranni the Carian Inverted Statue, and I have an idea of where to bring it (study hall bearing the same name).

But I am at a point where I don't care too much about spoilers anymore, and I really just want to know if the path I'm heading on is worth my time or not. I am not about to search around for hours figuring out where to pick up the next leg of a particular side quest, and definitely don't want to bother with it if the rewards aren't something I will be using. But I do know Ranni's quest is one of the bigger side quests in the game. So I will probably keep at it for now.

Ranni’s quest is very much worth following imo, to the point where a guide to ensure you don’t miss anything is worth it. Only because Fromsoft is intentionally vague on some things.

Yeah I'm going to look at a guide for sure on this.

This game just keeps on giving lol.

Shrike, are you still playing this? Have you beat the Fire Giant yet? If not, click below.

You can bypass the giant to get to the next, end game area, without hacks or a cheat, although it is somewhat of a glitch.

I did not find this - saw it detailed under a video on YT. Here’s the video…

The tip in the video didn’t work for me, the tips in the comments section did.

                  1. Get the Perfumer’s Grotto grace in Altus ….easy to get to.
                  2. Get the Four Belfries grace and rest here.
                  3. Go through the first portal to Crumbling Faraam Azula.
                  4. Warp to, but do not rest at, Perfumer’s grace.
                  5. Quit to menu while at the Perfumer’s grotto grace, then continue the game.
                  6. Game should load with you on the walkway into Crumbling Faraam.

                  Enjoy

Speaking of Radahn, Volcano Pots really do a number on him. I suspect it's similar to the dragon rot breath, but faster and easier to apply (assuming you have the recipe.)
I love volcano pots! My new favorite sidearm. Good damage, scale with stats, and cheap to make.

Still playing. Pretty sure this game is going to consume all of my free gaming time for the next few months even.

I did beat the Fire Giant. Had to redo my setup a little bit to make it happen but a bunch of bleed build oriented ankle whacking managed to do the job. He was a huge pain in the ass though.

Right now I'm in Consecrated Snowfield, Farum Azula (sp?), and going back to finish Lyndell Sewers and some of the Hero's Graves.

I wish I had not broke the bloody finger yura side quest, turns out that one of the rewards is an ashes of war that lets you dodge through the chariots in those hero's grave dungeons.

Cool. Sounds like the jig is up on Radahn's difficulty. More people are figuring out how to beat him easily now.

I just beat The Baleful Shadow and got a key. Now I'm at the lake of rot. Holy hell this place looks like a ton of fun. Think I'll avoid here for now.

It's basically a must have item in Ordina Liturgical Town, unless you fancy fighting invisible assassins with a move that can 1-shot you.

Alrighty. Well, it would appear that I am absolutely ****ed. I don't know how to keep my torch out and use a shield. Shields are kinda my go to thing and this is going to be a ****ing nightmare if I can't have a shield and be able to see what's happening.

I just went into the town, cruised around a bit, found one of those guys with the torch, swapped to shield, he disappeared, and now I hate everything.

Well, could use the torch as your weapon instead of the offhand, but need to level it. Or I guess just skip it.

I feel like you probably already know this but you can equip up to three weapons for each hand. Just swap back and forth between the torch and your sword in your right hand. That way you can always keep your shield up.

A shield might not be much of a help against the enemy he’s dealing with. He’s a right dirty s.o.b….probably one of the biggest troll points in the game.

Yeah it's hard to explain but basically there's a very specific torch that when you use it, you can see the baddies. But when you put the torch away (that specific one) then you can't see what you're fighting anymore. At all. And the belt lantern thing isn't the same, it doesn't light them up like the specific Sentry Torch does.

Okay, about to give this a watch. I only did a couple runs in, but didn't notice there were torches in the area to light.
OK I get it now. Thanks for explaining.

I was going to say you will just have to fight without a shield, but looks like you need to light those torches. Sounds like a totally tons of fun area!

To say that Fromsoft nerfed him is a GROSS understatement if I ever heard one.

As for me I just beat Astel Naturalborn of the Void. Took me 4 tries for this one. I had to resort to all ranged attacks. There was just no way I could fight that thing up close, even using spirit ashes for help so I kept getting smashed. But from afar with sorcery it was a piece of cake.

Now I am finally at that plateau area by the lake that I could not figure out how to get to. Have to stop for now though. Will pick it up again tomorrow.

I just didn't explore this last area at the top of the elevator yet so i don't have the final reward yet, but i do have an idea of what it is (staple magic weapon from previous Souls games).

After that I'll be picking up my previous progression on the mountain top of the giants.

Nice to have something that is more appropriate to AoEs... the wolves were getting beaten up too fast in some fights. I think the wolves are probably still better against single-target-attack enemies and things that are easily interrupted/staggered just due to frequency of attacks.

Still the mimic stood it's ground with a dragon, and that's not something the wolves do.
