I am enjoying the exploration and open world. Very satisfying. I was just thinking, "This is like a better version of Morrowwind." Not as flexible a class and spell system maybe, but as far as the scope and poking around.

Personally, I think they'd have a whole extra level of purchasing if they made a "story mode" where the content wasn't as finely tuned and people that just love looking around and doing stuff could hand Fromsoft $60 to enjoy the world building, the secrets, etc without needing to worry so much about being awesome in combat as they could still succeed by being "good enough." People that play online RPGs would love it.

Wow guys - you have to finish Ranni’s quest line, especially if you’re running a sorcery / battle mage type build.

      Message I should have left:

      “First off, Tears
      And then,
      Iconic Item ahead”

      That was Epic

Souls games get exploration right. They give subtle hints, but let the player do most of the work. Of course yeah this can at times lead to situations where things are a bit too obscure and obtuse, but in that case we can always resort to looking it up online to get that small bit of info we missed or forgot. Because of this though, the feeling of finding an important item, or finishing a quest line is so much more satisfying.

Fact is once you learn to appreciate how From Soft respects the player in this regard, it becomes really REALLY hard to play other games that don't.
I loved HZD for something different, but yeah, everything you said.

            Okay, that worked brilliantly.

The trick was I needed to apply 2 coats of Dragon Rot paint per phase. Full FP bar drain, refill, full FP bar drain. Run around until he comets. Full FP bar drain, refill, full FP bar drain. Run around and don't get hit. EZPZ.

Nice, feels good doesn't it? Guess what? I found another that might be tougher.

              And I can't use a summons. sigh....

Anyone fought Alecto yet? I can't even get 15% off his health bar.

Oh this freaking dude. My hands are just shaking, but I got him.

He dropped another spirit summons that just might be the best in the game. I thought it was the mimic tear, but black knife Tiche just holy hell rips enemies up. As brutal as the fight to get it was.

I have it to +6 and right now it is just deadly.

Edit: This is the guy that drops that spirit if anyone is interested. I’m not sure if you can get to him without completing Ranni’s quest line.

I love this game. The first boss I eventually beat was the best feeling I have had in a game in years. Oh and I just realized at level 22 that all those runes I was picking up weren't auto adding to my wallet and sold them all for 44k at one vendor. Great day. Back in 6 months.

                      Whew. I've been delving.

Managed to brave the scarlet lake without dying once thanks to judicious use of Fire Cleanse Me, cosplaying as a mushroom, and lotsa heals. Was feeling accomplished till I got to the thing at the very bottom.

Actually should do alright against it if I knew what it was weak to. Wish there was a grace right outside so I could swap out arts and keep trying things to see what hurt him most, but alas. Actually had him down to like 20% or so one try, so I know it shouldn't be too bad. A little extra dmg and it should be fine, just gotta time my rolls right.

Think I've exhausted my paths at the moment. Aside from that boss and the story boss at the Capital. Unless I feel like farming someone's armor or something. Though I spent some time today doing that to get the Nox Monk stuff. Wish I could wear the Crucible Tree set it's so ****ing sexy. Too bad I don't have the End.

So, first off, that thing that happens after you beat Radahn is pretty cool. The way that opens up the whole new level is a really awesome path to traverse.

But then that next boss you fight. the Mimic Tear actually surprised me. Someone had put down a “Butterfly Ahead” message so I was expecting something Moonlight Butterfly ish. Nope. It was me. I used Dragon Rot Breath on myself. Second attempt I knew exactly what to do. Went into that fight completely naked. WHAT NOW BITCH!?! Tossed on a few gear items real fast and LOL REKT.

That reminds me I have to go back there. the Bloodborne dude went down easy, but I never did the boss in the middle of the lake. I have 14 flasks now, so that ought to be enough to stay alive long enough to wreck him.

I did 2 other bosses this morning that I completely missed earlier and found yet another underground map.

They could have called this game “Endless ring” because dang man, it just keeps going

FYI there’s a catacomb in Radahn’s desert arena. All the way to the NE near the water.

I completely missed it first time. Some cool stuff in there.

Some of you guys are getting so far ahead of me. I've been struggling to find time to play on weekdays.

Even though I've got like 35 hours into the game, feels like I'm still so early in. Pretty much every post here now is something i have no clue about yet.

Im still heading north after the academy but went down into an underground cave with ants and staring to think I'm off the main path.

                                You’re Really early in Meteor.

Random exploration aside, I found that if I can track and follow quests, they’re going to lead me places I want to go, so to speak.

I’m ~120 hours in now and it just keeps going and going….my map looks like it has acne there’s so many points on it lol.

The game is really a weird mix and I’ve wondered what Miyazaki would say if asked about recommended levels for different regions.

I have one secret area that has these scrub dogs that 1 or 2 shot me + an invader right in the middle. Last attempt I was level 130 and I got destroyed.

Yet I’m absolutely wrecking main story bosses now

Meh, I’ll figure it out, but I have to know what’s past that area lol.

At 120 hours thats already double what it usually takes to finish a From Soft game. Well, just going to have to accept the reality I'll not be finishing this game any time soon.

Unless something with my schedule changes, right now only weekends is when i can actually get good chunks of time to play, and i don't want to even bother firing it up unless i can commit at least a couple hours.

This game is so massive and damn time consuming. I've been preaching to stay on the main path but I'm even having trouble taking my own advice.

To be honest, I’m not sure that even a ‘good’ souls player could successfully win the game on the main path alone. There’s always those *Fight 10 bosses at once, fists only, no damage* kind of players sure…but not your average souls player. There are just too many (IMO) necessary tools and gear off the beaten path.

My small gripes aside, and even preferring some of the Nioh mechanics over Souls mechanics, this is still very much shaping up to be GOTY for me.

But it’s a marathon, all the way, not a sprint for this old man lol.

Yeah I've been noticing that. Lots of goodies to find and the game definitely rewards exploration.

Just going to take my time and play when i know I'll have a good long session. Other days when i don't I'll just play something else.

Not complaining though, we get our money's worth with this one for sure.

Interesting thing I noticed... not compeltely sure if it's a bug or a deliberate feature regarding the Watchdog (specifically one with a bunch of imps with it.)

First time I fought it, I summoned an Elder Sorcerer, and started killing imps, and the dog killed me as I got staggered and couldn't respond in time to a pounch/slam.

So, the next time I went in I brought out the wolves... the watchdog just sat there while I killed the imps, then the wolves started nipping at watchdog and I just walked over to it and beat the crap out of it without it budging.

PROBABLY a bug, but the wolves ~= dog thing gave me pause to wonder.

I would guess buggy koralis…based on a couple of similar encounters where the boss never really aggroed.

Those imps though, so freaking annoying

I haven’t seen that…yet. I like my new spirit a bit better anyway. One of the last bosses I fought had about 25% hp left and I had run away to heal and buff, the spirit killed the boss

I really hope they don’t nerf these guys….

the mimics are highly dependant on your skill/weaponset, so yes, the "other" spirit is better in a lot of situations. I still preferred the mimic (90% of the time)

This game is GOTY for me. All the way. Maybe even GOTD. It's all the best parts of big open world exploration games like BotW or Horizon and others. But none of that Ubisoft gimmicky bullshit.

Elden Ring has broken Assassins Creed games for me now. I'm not climbing a single goddamned tower and they can shove that Ubisoft Store up their asses. I had 100+ hours in AC: Valhalla and was enjoying it at least enough to keep playing but this game has broken that.

A bug I'm sure. I'll give that a try this afternoon though. But I remember back in Dark Souls 3 having an experience where Highlord Wolnir was bugged on my screen. He wouldn't move. So I just hit him until he died. Thought I'd try coop so I could experience the fight, nope. I'd show up in another player's game, and Wolnir was still frozen in place. I saw the other players dodging around and fighting but I could just stroll up and thwack Wolnir until he fell off the cliff at my leisure.

This game has some weird bugs with bosses every now and then.

I mean, everything about Elden Ring just makes their games look childish in comparison. Well, I guess there's still a market for that style of game, still loads of people who don't like Souls combat and obscure mechanics. But for us who prefer this style it does indeed make it tough to go backwards.

Hate the kind of punching down I do to those game types, but they really are kind of garbage. They are just mindless drivel really in comparison. Before at least From Soft did not have a true open world game, just better combat. So you still needed to go to those games for that open world experience. But not anymore. Elden Ring has set the new standard for open world now too.

And he is Just. F’kng. Brutal. He’s the one I commented on that may be tougher than Radhan what’s his name…but you have to complete Ranni’s quest to be able to get to him

The good thing, he fights bosses the same way he fights you, and it’s wild the damage he does.

The good thing about the mimic is he’s customizable per fight, and that can come in really handy.

I think most devs have been taking notes on From Soft games since the first Dark Souls.

With the commercial success of Elden Ring seeming to be on track to top everything they've done sales wise they are probably taking note even more seriously now.

If From Software ever takes their open world with Souls combat and mechanics formula, and decides to try their hand at the MMORPG genre, I'll just work on my 2 weeks notice in advance. Because I'm pretty sure a game like that would be the first real gaming addiction since World of Warcraft's original launch.

The good thing, he fights bosses the same way he fights you, and it’s wild the damage he does.

The good thing about the mimic is he’s customizable per fight, and that can come in really handy.
Oh that guy. I've heard of him but pretty sure I'm nowhere near being far enough on Ranni's questline to be in danger of seeing his boss encounter anytime soon. I haven't talked to her up north yet. Which, now that I'm in Nokron, I should probably go do that.

Because I'm pretty sure a game like that would be the first real gaming addiction since World of Warcraft's original launch.

That and my Fire Art Scythe wasn't doing the most damage against him. Which was why I was hoping there was a grace there so I could play with arts and see if Cold, or turning the scythe into a striking weapon with the Crag art would do a little more to him. Definitely doable, just turned into a "I'll be back." kind of thing. A hahaha, so he's part of a quest and I stumbled down there anyways? Last I left Ranni I gave her something from Nox and she vacated the doll for the time being. Oh yeah, I forgot about that stupid chest as well. Good to know it shall all be revealed.

I just have to have my arsenal +1 talisman and the erdtree talisman on at the same time to keep it at Medium weight. I also just picked up a poise increasing talisman, wearing it all I have like 77 poise. I have no idea what that'll do for me and I'm probably gonna switch out for the time being, but it's kinda funny.

I respecced once so I could use the clean rot armor. On paper it’s amazing, but real world it didn’t seem much better than what I already had, so I don’t know what’s up with that. I’m back to using mostly armor from near the start of the game.
