I found a blade that, if you can get to it will probably make the first half of the game a lot easier -

Meteoric Ore Blade Scales with STR, DEX, and INT and causes bleed

I don’t know if weapons are really spoilers, but I’ll start tagging them just in case. Some are hidden really well, so I’m just posting as I find them.

there are tons of more or less hidden weapons in the game, it's kinda mind boggling at times. Some of the best weapons and armors are surprisingly easy to obtain, while others require lenghty quests, a strange mix.

It really is mind boggling. Specific, weapon based builds have always been a thing with Souls, but the sheer number of choices, even this early in the game, is going to make a decision really difficult.

As I have what I need to respec now, I just might build around this last weapon. The stats and scaling are nearly exactly what I was hoping for. They really covered all the bases on choice here.

On this weapon, I upgraded it to +4 and am now pretty easily killing enemies that I gave up on with the +4 crystal sword. For FYI, I’ve leveled up only 5 times between then and now with this and that was just vitality, so this sword is a winner

There certainly are some tough enemies there, and god dammit those birds.

But, the good thing is there seems to almost always be a way to stealth around things. Stormveil is the first area that made me realize the emphasis FS tried to make with stealth in Elden Ring. Nearly every tough enemy in that castle can either be sneaked by, or you can find an alternate route around them. I literally killed every tough enemy in that castle from first sneaking up behind them.

So while tough, you don't necessarily HAVE to face everything head on like in previous games.

            It’s just not needed.
Yep, so far they have mostly seemed to be hard for the sake of it, without really making it interesting or fun. Hopefully that changes soon because that Beastman of Farum Azula in the wolf cave near the start of the game has been the funnest fight so far.

I might go for that sword. Likely I will be working towards a quality build, as I usually do in Souls games, and would always choose INT over FAITH if I were to choose one. I am a ways off from the required 18 INT though. But maybe I'll grab it now and start leveling INT.

Other than that, I did say I want to hold off on playing too much more until I see what they fix with the next patch. But I do just want to finish cleaning out every area of Stormveil first. Found a few areas there still to check.

It’s a solid weapon for sure. Be prepared for a tough fight getting to it though, no surprise there.

Stormveil- any shock that I loved it? It brought back that old Souls feeling of dread that I missed so much. That’s also where I learned that, if you stealth past a group of enemies, and then lure another tough enemy out further on, some of them will chase you all the way back to the last group lol. Massacre

And some areas are loaded with illusory walls with some neat items behind them. It’s a pain looking for them, but worth it so far.

Minor boss design nits and picks aside, and with this new sword…still hovering around that 9/10 mark

I also wanted to mention, remember to upgrade your spirit summons. Makes a nice difference with their survivability

i'm nowhere near a "pro", but thx for the flowers . I do avoid all spoilers ingame or on the net because i think it ruins the game. It's great to see ragers diving head first into this game.

I just got it. Yeah was a bit annoying to get. Using my wolves spirit summon definitely helped.

Now I need to level INT 9 more times, and DEX 2 more to use it. Going to be a while.

I haven't found one illusory wall yet, so I kind of stopped looking. Was thinking there were none in this game but now I'll continue searching. Good tip about the lantern too, Silent-Runner. I assume they illuminate an indicator or something? Do torches have the same effect?

And yes, its a great game. But of course has the annoying little Souls game quirks. Honestly though, those are usually only a factor in the beginning on a first playthrough. Once you gain more familiarity and do successive playthroughs and know what to expect and understand the nuances, it usually turns out fine. That said I am still fairly early on in the game though so I'll still reserve final judgment.

I know you can upgrade them and think I figured out how. Just haven't done it yet. I did find a girl Roderika on the path to Stormveil and sent her to the Roundtable hold, and did all the dialogue with her and the smith. But just haven't been back there yet since. Will have to check that out next time.

Doesn't help if said fight would be easier than backtracking, in places that won't allow fast travel.

Very nice. Nice sure if there's time to do it but I will give it a whirl if I ever get super frustrated and need a break. Thank you!

I just swapped out my starting Axe for the uchikatana or whatever it's called. I like the idea of the axe, but it's just a bit too slow for boss fights or when things gang up on you. Awesome for one-on-one Block/Smash, but the other is just more generally useful. After equipping it, my ability to take down the rotting giant things and the big statues went up considerably... yes, less damage per attack, but can get in 2 attacks instead of 1 and might even be able to get away cleanly. The boss mechanics just don't favor slower weapons.

Unexpectedly made it to a new area *cough* and rode the well elevator... wow, that's a trip. Stuff down there I think is tougher than I'm used to... don't think I should be there yet.

i should've worded it differently, the lantern won't reveal a hidden wall (at least i'm not aware of an effect that does something like that), it will help with dark rooms behind them because even with it equipped you can dual wield weapons (other than with a torch) which is sometimes needed because not all rooms behind these walls are empty. As far as i know the only way to "find" and "open" these walls is by hitting them (again, i could be wrong). Some are more obvious and therefor easier to detect than others.

OK understood. I don't even have a lantern yet anyways, just a torch to swap from in my left hand.

just check the different vendors, one of them always has one. The idea of a "magical" lantern sounds nice at first, but it would completely ruin the hunt for hidden rooms.

I think someone earlier asked for screenshots. After defeating Godrick I got to a new part of the map and took these screenshot because I thought it was breathtaking. I was amazed that the misty woods in the first image isn't just a background setting but a place you can really go. This is the real Breath of the Wild.

Same with the torch. I’ll hunt up a lantern though. Both hands free is nice. Although I will say a torch, especially the one you find later, does pretty decent damage too.

I have been thinking that a lot lately.

Back when I was playing Breath of the Wild I was constantly imagining a Souls game with that sort of open world. Now we have it!

During a lunch break dungeon run, I learned something really important regarding upgrade materials.

An optional boss just dropped an item that, when given to the right vendor, made +1 and +2 smithing stones available.

So not all optional bosses are just for fun? I’m guessing I need to find the same items from other optional bosses to unlock higher tier stones…

It’s really nice that optional bosses actually have a reason

Not really. Some players (me) like to charge right in to get a feel for the difficulty, then adjust as needed. Others are good enough to do that, most aren’t.

With this game though, you can explore, level to your hearts content. You don’t even have to fight the first 2 main bosses until later if you want.

With this much variety, there’s going to be a massive range in negative all the way to the most positive reviews.

Souls games are what they are. Some love them, some hate them, and some love to hate them

I think both groups are right.

It's a Souls game for sure, and it's every bit as challenging as a Souls game can and should be.

But what's different than before is that in a previous Souls title, if you ran into roadblock, that was it. There's only a few paths available at any given time, and usually only one real way to move the game forward. In this game, if you run into a roadblock, you can roam the world, farm up souls, explore, farm up crafting items, and all sorts of other options are available that aren't "Go back and keep trying that demon on the wall until you succeed."

I saw a youtube video of the tree sentinel (or whatever the giant knight on a horse is called) and he looked absolutely brutal.

Then later I saw a video of that same guy tackling some dragon and the dragon looked like a cakewalk.

I almost suspect the Tree Sentinel is designed to remind new players that:
                                                      1. Too hard? **** off and go do something else. You don't HAVE to fight everything you encounter.
                                                      2. Try mounted combat. This guy is.

Tree Sentinal isn’t nearly as hard as the boss fight before him, but you have to collect certain items to go back and unlock it. And it Is. A. B***h.

I killed the Tree Sentinel on my first attempt. He was easy because I waited until I got the horse for mounted combat, and due to the size of the environment you fight him in. I just kept running at him, taking a swipe, then running away. Also would just kite him around taking swipes when I could. He hardly even touched me.

But what shrike says is same as what I would say. The game is different than other Souls games in that you're never stuck. If you come across a tough area or boss, just put it on hold and fast travel out to another area and focus on something else for a while. But yeah, the enemies and bosses themselves are just as tough as in previous Souls games.

Also, Dr. Disrespect is a ****in dumbass.

So, I don't know where he came from but I got in a fight with someone blowing fire and flames everywhere and then this dude Albus comes out of nowhere and won't stop attacking me. I think he was an NPC because he was crawling, moving very slow, had a name, and was either an NPC I aggroed on accident or an enemy that had his fight capabilities set to kitten mode.

Anyways, I killed him. Got half a medallion. Is he a part of a quest chain that's now pooched?

The first time I fought him he literally stayed in one spot and just jumped and jumped, slamming that AOE every time. It was impossible to get close to him. After that attempt, he was annoying, but “normal” and not too bad.

I did not find her in the castle until after I saw someone else on YT using her in the fight. I just used my spirit summons. The wolves definitely helped me, at least to distract him for a bit.

I wish I could go back and redo that fight with her, I think it would have been way easier. Makes me wonder if From Soft intends for us to use the NPC summons even more now with Elden Ring, maybe for quest reasons.

The first time I fought him he literally stayed in one spot and just jumped and jumped, slamming that AOE every time. It was impossible to get close to him. After that attempt, he was annoying, but “normal” and not too bad.

I think I got an easier version of the RNGesus then because when I fought Godrick he kept doing that AOE earthquake thing which was helpful since I'd figured out how to leap in, slash, and roll away. And the barbarian chick just face tanked it throughout and then dusted herself off afterwards with maybe 25% health left.

Is he a part of a quest chain that's now pooched?
yes and no. you can do a quest which involves him, but it's not a chain and the end result is something you can achieve in another way

I spent a long time memorising Godrick's moves and found that any pet was a pain in the ass. The entire first half of the fight I could do without damage, but pets aggro him and screw up what he will do (he does more range attacks or more wind attacks depending). His second phase, though, was killing me because the fire attacks were trouble (a lot of RNG there and patience).

I did end up using the NPC chick and the squid at the same time because it made the first half of the fight go by quicker. I already proved to myself I could do it without damage, but that half took minutes and minutes alone. Both her and the squid were dead by the time he hit about 1/3rd health for me. It was still a careful exchange but at least he went down.

If anything, the summons save you some time, but won't remove the need for you to know how to beat him. At least that's my opinion.
