To be clear I was talking about parrying, and specifically against Margit. I swear I would get off a clean parry, he would make the gesture like being stunned and the lock on indicator would turn red but I could not riposte.
As for counter attacks with R2, they are great. But, yeah sometimes against tough enemies like that boss he would just hyper armor through it and I'd take a huge it. It would be much more useful against enemies that it would guarantee to stagger.
Understood - I should have been the one that added clarity lol. I think the mechanics of the parry and the counter attack work the same way in that you perform action ‘a’ in order to accomplish ‘b’.
I’ve noticed with both parries and counter attacks using the shield there are times I ought to be able to do “b” but can’t for some reason.
So, poking around here and there. Did a couple optional mini bosses. Right now I'm just putzing around exploring.
Two questions. Are arts like Caryl Runes in Bloodborne in that I can reuse them again and again? Just slotting them out and back into things?
And
That wonderous flask thing. Are the tears consumed when I mix a flask, or are they permanent items that allow me to mix whatever when I get more? I know it's one use per rest. I just have issues using items that may or may not be one use cause From is excellent in having ambiguous mechanics.

The arts are permanent as long as they’re equipped.
This boss I’m at, I’m not willing to keep throwing myself at it. I just did something like 10 more runs at it. I’m level 45, but I’m not even sure another 15 levels would help.
Phase 1a> easy peasy
Phase 1b> same
Phase 2a> wtf but I lived
Phase 2b>
I tried to summon 5 or 6 times unsuccessfully. Watched a couple of videos on the fight, they both had summons with them.
I just beat Margit finally, at level 30 Astrologer. No wolves or summons used. I think this boss is the way he is to teach that you can't dodge-spam everything because of enemy combos. It's all timing.
Gotta say that was a clean damned fight you had there. Made it look almost easy. Patient as **** throughout too. Especially when you backed into some sword debri and looked like you might've gotten stuck. I would've panic rolled until I was dead.
The thing about Art of Wars only being usable without something in your left hand is bullshit (shields specifically, but I imagine it applies to dual wielding also?) Would have taken little effort to let you select what happens with the LT button from available options as Nioh does.
Still of the opinion that most bosses (even mini bosses) are overpowered. I'm not a fan of the principle of getting hit = death, and guarding with a shield seems pointless for anything but rabble as you're still taking a ton of damage. (bear, watchdog, cavalry, etc, etc)
That said, downed the pumpkin (no, he isn't an example of the one hit death principle above), so maybe sorceries will help out to keep some range.
Looks like you sorted it out but there's an NPC who sells NO SKILL weapon arts for putting on shields.
But yeah the shield block into counter seems to only work in 1v1 against non-boss opponents. It's really frustrating to have a boss ping off your shield, you hit the counter, and while you're in the middle of that attack animation the boss just YEETS you off your feet because **** you.

Ahh cool. Yeah, was curious as I picked one up off a knight that I want to play with a bit. Bloody Slash. ****s up my scaling a bit and lose some damage, but along with the weapon art, my sword now has a blood loss passive. Good to know I can swap them in and out. Didn't want to use it once and have it gone forever just to test things out.
Also looking like that Wonderous Flask is reusable with tears. I.E. Just choose a combo and you don't lose the tears, so you can mix and match to your hearts content.
Also liking that they left a free appearance changer in at the Hub. Nice to be able to change my dude if I get bored.
Time to ignore Margit some more and keep exploring.

Also, I'm really enjoying helping others with the Jolly Coop side of this game.

And one more thing, starting as the wretch when you have zero idea about where the good weapons are was not a good choice, I had to spend hours before I got a character that was actually fun to play.
Cleric Beast down. Now I'm just debating how rare the smithing stones gonna be. Wonder if I should pump my main sword up to +3 or hold off till I find something more interesting. Eh, I'll drop some more into my sword and what happens happens. I'm sure they end up being super plentiful like all the low tier ones in previous Fromsoft games.
Started as a Confessor, I think that's the name. Ended up not being bad as they start with OK stuff and looks like Faith also gets the Pyromancy. So should be fun.
Ended up getting some Zombie Pikemen as a summon at some point. Thought they were fairly fragile, up until they self rezed like the skeletal enemies.

I think there are three problems:
1) almost all bosses do chain-combos, and the combos don't seem like they can be interrupted. Saw something similar with a non(mini?)-boss lance user... Jab-jab-jab kept going even with a block.
2) Whatever stagger delay happens is pretty minimal for bosses.. inversely proportional to max health?
3) Not yet at a level where I can absorb a boss hit and still have a ton of stamina ready to go. BLocking the hit, and having 0 stamina just means you get hit with the followup attack, and there's ALWAYS a follow-up attack (see chain combos)

That seems about right. You should be able to block a chain (maybe the first hit takes a chunk of stamina then the stamina hits diminish for the next few hits?)
See. I just got the Uchigatana and now I hate to say it but ****, I might be going weeb build. The moveset is just too good for my playstyle. I might go take a look for that sword though and give it a try before investing some stones in upgrading my new blade. I've been studying it.

I followed the map link, zoomed out… HOLY COW! I’ve only just scratched the surface! This game is huge!
It gets even bigger later, much, much bigger. Much
One thing I’m really appreciating is the environmental and enemy variety in the world. Other devs making open world games should really take note. It’s incredible.

WTF? How is that possible? That map is goddamned enormous.

Just lost 17k runes/souls. At the end of a long, grueling cave, opening up some doors forces you through a mini-boss fog gate with no escape other than killing him. I've seen grace points right before less difficult bosses... but not here. I'm not going through that again.
Real ****ing tired of people summoning me for that goddamned dragon fight at level 10.

Not sure which dragon..I’ve counted at least 12 so far. I’ve only killed one yet.
Right now I’m in Souls limbo. Any players that were worried it was easier than other souls titles, rest easy. this might be the hardest souls - like yet.
I’m kind of at a wall. I want to level a bit, really need to, but the only enemies worth farming to get enough are exhausting. I don’t want to farm for hours, and I’m losing patience with spam attack type bosses. I really, really hope later bosses are melee based, or at least don’t spam attack.

I've heard about that place. I'll probably wait until I'm... <checks notes> ... level 80 before I wander in that direction.

Welp, got my first Great Rune. I had a harder time getting to the activation tower than I did the boss fight that gave it to me. Then again, NPC help, and my Spirit Summon helped keep the heat off me during the boss fight.
Not sure where I'm gonna go from here. Threw myself at a stupid optional boss thing in the basement of the castle, but think I'm gonna stop that until I'm a bit more equipped.
I had been running around Caelid
Is that the place with the T-Rex Dogs and angry man crows?
and
that other place that you transported from the Dragon Ruins. Took care of Burger King guys, but skipped the double boss out that way
before I finished Not-Cleric Beast Margit.
Don't know if I should work on the zone beyond or try somewhere else.

I know where I have to go, but I hate it so I’m going everywhere else first
I found a tower in Caelid….man - I have trouble with heights in games and I’m fighting guys on 2’ wide ledges, jumping over holes in the ledges - hands are sweaty and shaking and my heart is pounding. I might die playing this.
At least I wouldn’t have to worry about that boss that’s been sticking my own foot into every orifice of my body.
I might have psychological issues after playing this
Done now. Time for sleep lol.
EDIT: I think everyone has one boss that is just this worst for them. This is mine. FightinCowboy on yt is really good at these, and I just watched him die multiple times to a boss that went down easily for me.
I'll have to catch up reading about everyone's adventures here.
In the meantime I'm starting to think maybe i want to hold off playing until i see how frequent they are releasing patches, and if there's any performance fixes coming. The framerate dips to 30 too often while exploring, and I'd really rather them iron it out before playing much more.
Another thing that's really getting to me while making my way through Stormveil castle is the bloodstains being broken. I tend to rely on them a lot in these games to get an idea what's killing other players, i miss that right now. They need to fix it.
yep, but you can get it without even fighting anything. Doesn't hurt to get it for later
Yeah I have the sword, and it really is nice, but it calls for a split build, faith/int. And I don’t want to spend points there yet.
I explored some more, found an encampment full of knights. Killed them all and felt like I was doing ok. Then I looked in a certain direction or something and died losing thousands of runes.
Old mechanic with a new name
Frenzy is called Madness now
and I have no idea how to get past it.

I don’t know if it’s the areas I’m in, but I’m seeing dips much less frequently now, only thing is when it does tank it tanks hard and nearly freezes for a second or 2. It’s a major problem if I’m in combat.

Much agreed on the bloodstains too.
My understanding of the problem is the longer you spend in a given area, the less frequent the framerate dips become. Because after a while the game has finished loading most/all the assets. I agree though, the worst is when it happens during combat and the main reason why its bothering me. I can deal with a micro stutter here and there in a huge new open world game like this, but since combat is so tense and focused in this game its a deal breaker when I get those screen freezes while fighting.
I actually didn't quite finish the game I was playing before Elden Ring released, so maybe I will spend this week finishing that up. Maybe by next week they will release a fix. Here's hoping because I am really loving the game so far otherwise.

*sigh*
yeah, i'm running a faith-build so it's perfect for me.
As for the "mechanic". yes i know where you are, happened to me too, took me a moment to understand what's going on.
So much to see, explore, hidden pathways, secrets everywhere, unique mobs, tons of cool weapons. Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming to say at least

That makes sense regarding the assets. I’ve been exploring different maps pretty frequently, I think I’ll stay where I’m at for a while and see if it smooths out
Just started this, because after trying the 36GB demo I was convinced to buy it. Enjoyed more from the outset than any Souls game to date, probably because even with a more open world, Elden Ring seems more coherent.
