        Diablo is dead to me.

Especially since I found Pillars of Eternity.

you wanna just change this to the diablo 4 thread, instead of calling it official trailer now?

Looking good, although I feel like they put a nice sharpening filter on the game/screenshots. D3 wouldnt look so blurry and bad compared to this if they sharpened that game up a bit. Either way I am sure the visuals will change from now til when it gets released. Still anticipating 2 years out. If it takes them 1+ years to get Diablo Immortal out after announcement I give D4 double the time.

Blizzard doesn't typically release demos for their games (though they make so few anyway).

There isn't any real issue with the in house engine that Blizzard uses besides the low fidelity visuals - but that's intentional as Blizz prefers their games to scale fine on low end hardware.

Their D3 problems mostly lied with the art style and gameplay/gear progression, the engine itself wasn't the primary cause of issues, unlike say Bethesda releases which are plagued with Gamebryo issues.

Indeed the D3 engine per se isn't an issue (and no Alientank, it definitely does not look like a brand new engine built from the ground up. Have a source for that?).

It's just that one would be expecting them to really bring something really new to the table one decade later. Like, maybe, a brand new engine?

                            It is a new engine.

GamesBeat: How much new tech is there with the lighting in the game?

Murphy: It’s a brand new engine, brand new renderer, brand new lighting tech. We have dynamic time of day that happens when you’re in the overworld. We even have dynamic time of day in the random exterior dungeons we’re making.

We have dynamic weather systems. When it starts to rain, things get wet. Ripples start to happen after it’s been raining for a while. Water accumulates. Your hero gets wet. All these things happen, and that affects lighting. It’s PVR, so this is the first time we’ve had that in Diablo. It’s a completely new lighting pipeline. It’s actually been really cool to build it.

Sounds like the blatant BS that Todd Howard used to spread "It's a new engine", when in fact they added a few lines of code, hit the compile button, and renamed it for publicity reasons. (then 15 year old gamebryo bugs still happen in the game lol)

"it's a new engine" is the new "this is actual in game footage" (shows obvious bullshitted pre-render)
"it's a new engine" is the new "we won't have microtransactions this time, promise"
"it's a new engine" is the new "we didn't cut finished portions of the game out to sell as DLC"

When some PR shill from a studio who has been using the same game engine for 15 years, like Bethesda or Blizzard, says "it's a new engine" - take it with a grain of salt.

I dont mind crossplay in this game. Theres no difference in skill when using a controller. D3 on the consoles and on switch actually works well.

It'll be rough for a week or two and then settle down, just like always when a game like this releases.

The pros far outweigh the cons. The game will feel extremely lively 3 years down the road.

It works in PoE because sockets are the be-all end-all and any item (even a white) with a good socket setup can directly compete with a legendary without sockets.
Clever, but I inherently don't like the "skills are items" philosophy. Class identity is important in an arpg.

Titan Quest handled it well with "Monster Infrequents".
They were items that only dropped from certain monsters and they had affixes which couldn't be found on any other items in the game.

And you could further enchant them with Monster Charms, while the legendaries were unmodifiable.

The only pvp I did was in Diablo 1 where I would go out of my way to troll people that tried to kill others. I'd make a game, set it to pvp and then use a cheat to see if they had ears in their inventory. Then I'd use a cheat to make myself invincible and they'd get angry. Good times.

I used to play Diablo 1 and really enjoy it, it was because of the music, graphics and the opressive mood. The big part of it was the continuos descent into the dark.

I found none of the above in Diablo 3 though, and without those combat is a slog for me. I tried for a good 20 or sth hours, played a crusader and necromancer. I dislike Blizzard, consider them really overrated and their games backwards but here I really tried, for the sake of nostalgia and had a serious rpg fix at the time. So, anyway, what do people mean when they say the combat is perfect? I tried playing mp btw but it looked like a cheap disco party and was basicaly unbearable. Is it something that happens later like when you reach 60 level or sth?

I went straight for Torment level III (highest that was unlocked at the time) and it became a tiny bit better with how I had to give more attention to all that disco crap on the screen. The problem though, besides the lazy generic electrical/ freeze/ sth sth effects on the better skeletons for example (some imagination maybe? zone of decay, ray of death, black puddle, anything death related really), was how suddenly every basic spider or skeleton turned into HP monster that had to be intensly bludgeoned to fall. This is how my guy looks like...

... some immersion right there, nanotube spiders and diamond skeletons.

Another problem was, when I die I can respawn next to the body and continue, just happened to have sth piece of equipment that prevents my gear from wear, what is the point of playing this game really?

So, recognising my mistake, I went for hardcore barbarian (hard difficulty, highest avilable) and it was better, for 5 minutes only though. As soon as I leveled up, instead of pulverising enemies with his insane strenght and ferocity, my barbarian started shooting rainbows out of his hands and putting down the colorful hammer despite wielding a spear and a knife. Having swallowed that bitter, suspension breaking pill I continued and few minutes later was destroying everyone and as soon as you see that the enemy can't hurt you, the fun is reduced to the level of fun when chopping wood. Then I went into the crypt and died right next to the entry because I was immediatly blocked, frozen and then surrounded by a pack of tiny undead dogs or whatever they are with no tool to get out of the situation. Which, while cheap would be still perfectly fine on a mode called hardcore if it wasn't for the hour I wasted killing zombies in complete safety.

Anyway, I don't know. It seems there is no right way, it's either a meaningless casual grind or a one life mode that it surely wasn't designed for. You can respec, change everything on the fly, change the look of the equipment to ridiculous levels (ie swords looking like axes etc) and I can't shake off the feeling that this game has no soul, like designed by a commitee of managers who could make Fortnite ones seem like caring for the game. It really does nothing to change my opinion about Blizzard as the most overrated and backwards company out there.

Maybe in 3 months time, when I forget and try again.

Greetings traveller. Who am I? Perhaps you have met me twixt sleep and and wake - in the penumbra of uncertainity you call unconsiousness... you know, my books are essentialy about "what ifs". In "Black Fang" I asked - what if a rat could drive a bus? And what if it and its rat brethren took over and ate Parliment?

A lot of people say "Garth Merenghi? Doesn't he write that horror crap?" Well, you're an idiot, because my books always say something, even if it's simple like "Don't geneticaly engineer crabs to be as big as man". There's always a message or a theme.

It's at least a bit relevant though, with that quote about combat in 4 looking identical to 3 (and being perfect).

Btw yesterday I had what was one of the stupidest moments of my gaming life. I decided to play a bit more of my crusader before I delete, went to the dungeon, met some golden skeleton with his mob and I was clearly too weak for him, killed me over and over. Instead of going somewhere else like usual (I always subconsciously assumed that there is some punishment for dying besides item wear, like xp penalty or sth), I pushed on, got killed like 30 times but chipped him enough between deaths to destroy him in the end. It was ridiculous, I was laughing loudly at the absurdity of the system in this, not sure what to call it, gamey-ish something. I mean, at least ressurect the creatures in the mob that killed you and substract the xp, idk just something.

Btw the skeleton was throwing around balls of electricity and circles of freeze, exactly like almost everybody there does. It's lazy, uninspiring and out of place, how they manage to run away with a design worthy of a 3$ mobile game after a decade in development, no idea.

So, to keep it somehow on topic, for the sake of gaming, human dignity and the future of science, I really hope D4 is nothing like the D3. Games preinstalled on mobiles ie snake were less casual that this when it comes to punishment for failure. It's like a dedicated playable presentation of everything wrong with modern gaming.

I play a rebel brain expert who's in rebelliance against conventional logic, who's in rebelliance against the world order. It's about rebelliance. And if that's not being an innovator, I don't know what is.
